GDS I NEED YOUR HELP

I usually prep for Halloween much sooner than this, but whatev. I know a good few of y'all are cosplayers and I wanted some advice for how to replicate the rebreather filters on Jon's mask seen below

I've got the mask itself already, it's just a matter of a minor alteration here and there and HOW DO I MAKE THOSE THINGS JESUS

Actually...those could probably be found parts that you can beat up - bum around a hardware store or something? IDK. Bottoms of soda cans?

I mean, I know probably five different ways to custom-hand-make things like that out of air-drying clays and other substances, but why go that far when there are much easier ways to do it? If you can find some kind of object that has a similar appearance - and the correct size - and if it's metal in the first place, that's less painting work to be done.

I may be an elitist but I'm also lazy. :D I like doing things in as few steps as possible and only going the full-on make-it-from-scratch route if I'm completely dissatisfied with any other method.

They actually look to be the size of tuna cans, maybe you can pound some of those out, maybe use the bottom of soda cans to do the insert pieces? Or smaller tins?

i'm not a huge cosplayer, but i'd say to go to your local red light district and look around the army surplus stores, see if they have any gas masks for cheap

after that it's just a matter of transplanting

I think the bottoms of soda cans would be your best bet :|a They might be a LITTLE on the small side in terms of diameter, but they'll give you the look you're going for!

APPARENTLY IN CITIES THAT AREN'T MINE, THE ARMY SURPLUS STORES ARE NOT INT HE SAME NEIGHBOURHOODS AS THE WHORES

MY POINT STANDS

[identity profile] ravenrants.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Pro-tip? Hot glue around the edge takes care of the sharp edges. As does clear tape and puttty if your sculpting the details.

[identity profile] wrong-sometimes.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
OH- OH! reading a few threads down - you might be able to skip the army-surplus and go to the hardware store. I have no idea how much they cost, but some commercially available breathing masks (for drywalling and working with chemicals) have similar breathing... things.

I think someone needs to app Freddy Kreuger and have him stalk the hell out of Jon for stealing his gimmick (http://chud.com/articles/content_images/237/Dream%20Warriors%20N.jpg). XD

If things don't work out, I just recently made my costume mask with some light-weight modeling compound called "Delight". It's really easy to work with and weighs hardly anything.

[identity profile] exceedmyself.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
sdnjfnjskf I am getting some incredibly innovative answers here. Thank you bb :3 I'll see if there's anything out in the garage I can gut.

[identity profile] exceedmyself.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
rofl oh god they could have a bad bromance, they have similar interests, and Jon gets on with the known pedo from home...

Really? :O Do they sell that in hobby stores or did you have to order it?
hackeralastair: (musical week)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-10-11 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
weeeeeeelll that may be exaggerating, but generally I tell people that when it comes to props and accessories, there's never just one way to do it and there's often many ways. And the "best" way is wholly dependent on your budget, materials, and skills. Some people can afford to make molds and resin-cast everything, I can't.

But a lot of good ideas are floating around here - shower heads, soda cans, cans within cans, I like all of them. It's probably going to come down to just looking at things and comparing the sizes to your face to see which one is the right size and will do the job the best.

[personal profile] holeheart 2010-10-11 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
oh hell no, no welding. Superglue works just fine on aluminum and steel. Or epoxy!

omnomnom Halloween cosplay!

[identity profile] sable-cloak.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be terrifying. Fear gas and Freddy Kreuger. So much for caffeine. (Oof, that's the last thing I want to be think about, is a Kreuger app.)

I bought it at the local Michael's craft store, it says you can paint it, but I don't know how well that works, since I only needed white, and just bought the uncolored type. It worked well for me and holds its shape pretty well. It air dries in a couple days, no baking required.

[identity profile] brevipennate.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
no problem! good luck (:

[identity profile] sometimesamuse.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? Hit up an auto parts store and pick up some oil filters. To wit:

Just chop off some of the length, if you have to, and paint those suckers.

[personal profile] stealer_ofsouls 2010-10-12 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem! Not all of them have a black casing, of course, so you're definitely going to want to pick up paint, but look mainly for size. They'll probably run you in the $5 range each, since you don't need to worry about getting a fancy high-performance one or anything.
