Birth parents: HEY RUKA WE KNOW YOU'RE SICK AND ALL BUT WE GOTTA GO FUCK OFF TO THE BAHAMAS FOR THE NEXT FIFTEEN YEARS, SEEYA. Literally we only see them in flashbacks to when she was three, and we never get to see their faces. Ruka herself is the one that explains that the parents are always on business, but since they write, she and Rua live cozily enough. That's why she's so super dependent on Rua, actually. About sixty episodes after that (series you are so wonderful with pacing), Ruka meets a boy who explains that one day his parents abandoned him and his sister, and he never saw them again. Ruka instantly announces to herself that this is exactly the same situation as her and Rua, so AS FAR AS SHE'S CONCERNED, HER BIRTH PARENTS HAVE ABANDONED HER. assuming they are her birth parents I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT THIS.
And then in the City she got two WAY BETTER parents, which considering some of that criteria was "come home at least once a year" was not a difficult bar to surpass. AND I CAN SAY PARENTS BECAUSE THERE WERE ADOPTION PAPERS AND EVERYTHING YOU GUYS, SHE FINALLY HAS A GODDAMN SURNAME, THIS IS SO FRIGGEN EXCITING SHE GOT TWO IT IS A HYPHENATED HOT MESS. anyway her relationship with miles is like THE FUCKING EPITOME OF AWKWARD, considering she's not used to having parents around, he's not really used to being around kids kay doesn't count she came later and with his parent relationships being "my father was killed and I spent the next decade and change blaming myself for his death" and "VON KARMA," he's not exactly sure how everything goes either. BUT THEY TRIED, DAMMIT. HE WAS PROACTIVE ABOUT HER NOT BEING ALONE IN A STRANGE AND DANGEROUS WORLD AND THEY GOT USED TO EACH OTHER AND IT WAS STRAINED AND THINGS HAPPENED AND THEN HE DIED AND RUKA GOT TO LIVE THROUGH HIS EMOTIONAL MURDER AND THEN TOTALLY DIDN'T EVEN TELL HIM FOR LIKE A YEAR, SMART ONE KID, AND THERE WERE DOMESTIC FIGHTS AND ONE TIME HE TURNED INTO A POLAR BEAR AND OTHER SHIT HAPPENED IT WAS GREAT. THEN HE GOT EMOTION-WIPED BY THE PORTER AND WOW THAT WAS FUCKED UP AND THAT WILL TAKE HER SO MUCH TIME TO COME TO TERMS WITH ESPECIALLY SINCE HE IS GONE!! HER WORLD IS SORT OF IN SHAMBLES FYI.
Her relationship with Remus is, thankfully, a lot more stable! lol the first time she met him was THAT TIME AT THE PORTER WITH THE WEREWOLFING, so in a really weird way there is a part of her that subconsciously sees Remus as falling under her jurisdiction of protection SHE IS FRIEND TO ALL THE MONSTERS ALL OF THEM (THAT AREN'T GIANT SPIDERS OR SOUL-CONSUMING DARK GODS KIRYU). He's also pretty much home-schooling her on the side forever, captain of the Can't Sleep Nightmare Tea Party brigade, is the stable force in the family (HE IS THE CORNERSTONE AND FOUNDATION AND SIX OTHER BUILDING METAPHORS I CAN'T THINK OF RIGHT NOW). They're similar in a lot of ways, so it's easy for them to get along.
I still can't remember for the life of me if she ever actually sat down and told either of them THE BATSHIT OF HER CANON other than what was necessary to explain that a couple of her friends / mistaken-for-her-caretakers-when-it-was-more-the-other-way-around showed up and were A FUCKING LION and ALSO HERE IS A DRAGON.
