THE TL;DR MEME
» post with your characters
» reply to other people's comments with questions about their characters like "tell me about your headcanon," "why did you pick them up," "what's up with that username," "BUT HOW DO YOU FEEEEEEL," or whatever else you'd like to know, bonus points for hideousness
» answer questions you receive with as much teal deer as you deem appropriate
» everyone gets an excuse to ramble about random things
» this meme was lovingly ganked and modified from a poly meme
» it is physically impossible to be late

the short answer is that it was the 60s and also blame stan lee. the longer answer is that clint was designed to be part of the secondary set of avengers, who utilized mainly secondary colors--pietro was green, wanda was pink (not scarlet!), and i guess they thought purple went well with that. it did serve to differentiate them from the first run of avengers, who nearly all wore primary colors.

icly i don't think clint thought about it too much, he just used the materials available to him to make a costume. his first costume was more blue than purple, anyway, but i guess as he kept making revisions the purple became more and more iconic. his sense of fashion is very stunted considering where he grew up; before he was hawkeye his performance costume was green trousers and a mocassin jacket with tassles. so this clearly isn't a man who has much shame when it comes to the way he dresses.

now he's basically too old and stubborn to change it, since he's very proud of the legacy and reputation he has as hawkeye.
