Around the beginning of their friendship and for like a good solid year John could not for the life of him understand why anyone would think Kanaya was naggy. She was probably his favorite troll for awhile, and was really psyched that the two of them were becoming closer in the City than they'd ever been back in the game where they didn't really talk to each other unless John was pretending to be Rose. She's very helpful and seems pretty level headed... about most things. You know, wanting to kill some other trolls aside.

Lately though he's really seeing Vriska's point about Kanaya being fussy. In John's eyes her butting into the business between him and Davesprite is not only unnecessary and unwarranted, but also unwelcome and aggravating. While he's (to some extent) accepted that he was in the wrong for what he did to Jade and a few other girls (mostly Vrisk and Nill) and needed to apologize to them for some of the things he said, he doesn't feel that any of this was ever Kanaya's business and doesn't understand why she feels the need to get involved with it.

Lately John's also feels that all she blames him for any fight or argument he gets into lately, even when he thinks the other person is blatantly also part of the problem (at least in his eyes that's the case). He doesn't like the idea that people are trying to put the responsibility for Davesprite's choices on his shoulders, and feels like Kanaya is the one leading the charge on this whether that's fair or not on his part, and while he hasn't put too much thought into it right now he's noticed most of his conversations with Kanaya of late involve the two of them fighting. Instead of wanting to fix any of the problems on his end though John just wants Kanaya to back off him, and is likewise hasn't really evaluated the change in their friendship because he's too busy being irritable with her. :(

John adores the hell out of Nill, he always has but her letting him into her life a little more did actually sink in some with him and made him realize that the two of them are close friends. He doesn't actually realize that Nill has told almost no one the stuff she let him in on, but he does realize that's not the kind of thing you casually toss out to people. If he had any big secrets of his own he might trust Nill with them! Unfortunately he's pretty open about things, so that's not really an option. BUT BELIEVE HIM IF HE DID she'd be one of the top of the list to hear them.

She's also one of the only people he feels genuinely bad for upsetting with his recent behavior, because he recognizes how what he said was really shitty given her past.

In general she's a very sweet and easy to get along with person. He's comfortable around her, and has a lot of fun hanging out with her. At the moment she's probably one of his favorite people to be around in the City as a whole.

AND HERE STARTS "JOHN IS AN ASSHOLE" the story.

Okay, for real though in canon John doesn't think of Davesprite and Dave as different people, except for the part where he does. He contradicts himself by saying they're the same person and have the same shitty raps, and same jokes, and are the same guy EXCEPT Dave is clearly better, he's tired of Davesprite's shit but BOY HE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE DAVE AGAIN. Man he really misses Dave!!

Basically John's a huge douche when it comes to all things Davesprite related, and while he can clearly tell there's a difference between Davesprite and Dave on one level, he can't seem to understand that on another. He was... starting to get that a little bit in the City. Having the two Daves back to back to compare each other two was making the differences between them start to set in, and while he still didn't realize how much of an asshole he was being re: Davesprite he was doing okay with accepting them as different people and not playing Dave favorites too much.

Then I canon updated him and he backslid down the whole fucking mountain. Oops.

While John still has a more conscious understanding about the differences between Davesprite and Dave than he does in canon, he's not even trying not to play Dave favorites anymore. While it wasn't fair to be so angry at Davesprite for a note his future self leaves him, John was still upset and hurt enough about it when he shows up at the City that he ended up kicking up this huge fuss about it lashing out at Davesprite.

Unfortunately after that too instead of talking to Davesprite like a reasonable person John decided the easiest thing to do was let Davesprite leave to wherever he felt like going and washing his hands of the guy for the time being. Even more unfortunately while their friends were awesome about wanting to help fix the friendship with them John was having none of that, and ended up feeling attacked and blamed for the entire thing (probably because it was all his fault) when his friends approached him about the Davesprite issue.

It ended up feeding his anger and getting him upset and irritated all over again so he didn't have time to cool down, and the main portion of his anger was sadly directed at Davesprite despite Davesprite not having any control over other people's actions. So Davesprite now not only has all the anger John got from the note, but also a good deal of misplaced anger from other fights John has had with Kanaya and Rose of late too. SORRY ABOUT THAT, BUDDY :(

He missed her getting all tyrannical, so perhaps John's opinion on Fef hasn't changed too much?

It hasn't! I'M KIND OF SAD I MISSED THAT but I've been spotty with CNC lately and I need to fix that.

Though the good news is that it means John's opinion of Feferi is still really high. He really likes how fun loving and friendly she is, and thinks that over time they can become pretty great friends, but more than that he's really impressed by her own take on troll culture. While most of the trolls don't seem all that impressed by the system they had before the entire society went under, Feferi being the leader and not liking how things were in particular makes John go "WELL DANG, MAYBE THEY COULD CHANGE" though he was a little sad to hear she wasn't so sure about that herself. He thinks her ideas are good though, and she just needs a little more confidence and motivation to really get what she wants out of life!
