While rationally and emotionally everything currently in his life is suitable to his other wants and needs (sexy, smart girlfriend, political power and influence, actual friends somehow???, NOT BEING IN JAIL, NOT BEING IN NOHOPE, lavish lifestyle and accolades to match his daily egotistical needs), all of that is secondary to the thrill of intellectual challenge, which he most accurately finds in criminal activity. He has the self-awareness to recognize this, as well as the destructive streak to burn everything he's work for.
