Sometimes his fingers pull triggers even when his mind knows it isn't necessary. He can't say "no," because the coin is already flipped and the shot is already fired, leaving a bleeding body on the ground in front of him staining the soles of his shoes a muddy red. Its one of his henchmen that lays there, one half of a set and always loyal, sprawled on the wet ground looking upward with glassy eyes, and Harvey kneels next to them even knowing he should leave.
But he hasn't flipped, so the choice still dangles. He has some time before he has to either stay or go.
Sighing, he reaches over to close their eyes. ]

SORRY SO LATE
Right now, Harvey Dent feels as broken as it comes.
The night is cold and wet, but though his clothes cling to his body like saran wrap Harvey doesn't seem to notice a chill or even that it's raining; he stumbles forward blankly like a zombie, his good eye wide and his face bleeding. Everything about him says he's just been in a fight except for his expression, which is far away and disconnected from reality. His hands, both empty and held outward, go to his head to clutch it.
In his mind, everything is silent.
His coin is gone. Lost somewhere in the night during the struggle, and his fingernails are ragged and bloody from searching the darkness. It doesn't matter how late or how dark it gets, though; he has to continue searching, muttering to himself all the while questions that have no answers. ]
asdlkj SORRY FOR SLOW
she must make a strange sight, the hood of her jacket pulled up over a wild tangle of damp hair, pupil-less eyes staring heavily through the dim. but he's a stranger one still, bloody and lost, fumbling in the dark.
finally, without raising her voice, she tries for his attention: ]
Harvey.

But the broken silence is sharp, it cracks at his attention like a whip. ]
What?
[ He looks at her, straight at her, his hair limply drenched and clinging against his face. But it's not a voice from above, or from within, it's Danger, and she doesn't hold the sway over his decisions that the coin would. ]
I can't do this, Danger.

but at length, danger closes distance, something vaguely impatient in her tone when she crouches near him, reaching for him. ]
Stop this, Harvey.

[ He reaches for her with one hand, lowering his head so that it hangs facing the wet ground. The way shivers keep trembling his body almost resembles sobs, but his breath is quiet, his face restrained -- more or less -- when he looks back up at her. There's distress written on it, but it's of a calm and resigned sort. ]
I can't leave until I find it. I-- [ Because it would be the coin that told him, stay or go. ] What should I do?
no subject
Be calm.
no subject
Help me up.

it's more out of a practical desire to understand the situation she's in than any personal concern when she asks: ]
How do you feel?

[ He wobbles on his feet briefly before he manages to steady himself, looking at her under the wisps of wet hair clinging to his face. He shakes his head, holding out one of his open palms. ]
I can't hear anything.

she eyes him a long moment, suspicious still or maybe just curious. but the word he used-- disconnected-- she seems to identify with it somehow, because the moment passes, and she lets go. ]
You cannot hear anything. [ she echoes him. ] I am undecided if this is positive or negative.

There are always two paths, and he always has to follow the one the coin tells him to. That's how it works. But he's still only human; whatever his direction ends up being doesn't negate whatever opinion he may have had. Harvey still has hopes, still has wants. Sometimes the coin tells him what he wants and sometimes it breaks his heart. Every flip carries a desperation with it.
Because of that, it's two weeks before Renee would hear from him again. It's painful, entirely shattering to force himself to wait that long, but she gets her space. Two weeks later, he waits for her. ]

He clutches his coin tightly in his hand, his palm sore and sweaty around it. He follows at a quicker pace, and though he isn't quite running himself he's big enough that he doesn't have to over-exert himself to get within her range.
Good heads, he reminds himself. We're just going to talk. Don't get angry. ]
Renee. Renee, wait.
no subject
It's good to see you. You don't know how long it's been.
I hope you've settled in all right. No problems or anything.
[ One step, another, then he stops again. ]

[ He raises his eyebrow, watching her. Despite his smile he's paranoid, watching her for any sign of corruption. As long as she talks to him, though. He repeats his earlier assurance to her, just in case she forgot: ]
I don't want to hurt you.
[ And in case anyone has tried to convince her otherwise. ]
no subject
He takes another step closer. ]
Don't be afraid. You know I'd do anything for you, don't you? I want you to trust me. We make a great team, you and I.
[ No matter how fickle his loyalties can be, at least Renee is one of the trusted few who he can trust to hold onto his coin for him. Just in case. Any exceptions that are possible for him to make, for her he would. ]
