[ nothing is ever simple.

he should have resigned himself to that a long, long time ago, but somehow, that fact continues to surprise him with just how convoluted, messed up, and turned around things can and will end up. this is especially true, in matters concerning one eridan ampora. he can't remember the last time their relationship made sense.

he never stops hating himself, but the fact that he can't bring himself to just let go -- cut his losses and free himself, rid himself of all responsibility -- blackens that hatred just that little bit more. he's pathetic. and it's only going to get worse.

it doesn't matter what eridan is doing this fine evening, as he makes his way down the street. karkat's hand is going to clap down on his shoulder, to forcibly turn him to face him. ]

I've never met anyone in my entire horrible, worthless life who confuses me more than you do. [ he blurts out. ] What is even wrong with you?

[ eridan is talking on the phone this fine evening, in fact; when that hand first comes down on his shoulder, eridan irately tries to shrug it off, tone rising mid-sentence. then he's wheeled around, expression reading nothing but pure surprise, eyebrows up, phone still awkwardly mushed against his cheek.

there's a beat of stunned silence (people are swerving them with an odd look or two, but eridan doesn't notice), and then eridan's blinking. once, twice. ]

I'll call you back.

[ click. the phone droops an inch. ]
