[Yeah, okay, so he'd been a little extra excited to go on this trip. Because, look, you couldn't convince him mermaids didn't exist. He was a magic user, and if that was real, than who was to say what else was/wasn't? The storm, though? That had been a major miscalculation. Not on his part, this wasn't his expedition, but on the part of the captain. Unfortunately, like most sea-faring men, the captain was also super superstitious of magic so if their tag-along magic lad just happened to end up separated once the ship was hit a little too hard by the crashing waves, why, maybe the storm would just let up on its own. No harm, no foul.

Meaning, of course, that there was no one to hear his screams and he was left for dead. So much for finding mermaids, Kaplan. He feels himself being pulled under the water and starts trying to get loose and he's pretty sure that's when he passes out and...

Wakes up on an island? Well that was a turn of events he certainly wasn't expecting, especially not with -- ]

[No way. No way that's totally a mermai---merman?? right?? he's gotta be hallucinating, right?]

Well, yeah. [ Teddy grins at the sailor and shrugs. ] I mean, I saw what was happening and it's not like I could just let you drown like that.
