Novels could be written about Pepper's complicated relationship with her boss. She has more than just the whole keeping-a-steady-job investment in her work and pretty much always has. Getting to work for Tony Stark was two parts a dream and one part a nightmare, since he was a ~~MESSSSSSS~~ little less finessed when she first met him. Being from seven years in his past is difficult, because the Tony of today has a lot of guilt, a lot of personal change, and a kind of plasticity that scares her. His state of humanity has changed from her time, and that's not just on the level of change that Extremis gave him. She isn't sure what to think of him, and so has spent most of her time thinking about him since coming to the City.

It's easier than thinking about Happy and the baby, though.

Pepper's kind of cultivating a drinking habit to replace his when she gets too fed up with dealing with herself, her own mourning process, and the uncomfortable spot she's in.
