Does your character have a pet? Do they have pets in their home world? How about here in the City? What are their thoughts on animals in general? Do they have a particular creature they like or dislike?
I believe there's been a reference or two to Peter (or rather, Richard and Mary) having had a dog before his bio parents died, but other than that he's never had a pet! I don't think pet-having is something he's particularly for or against, it's just that he didn't have one when he was a kid that he can really remember, and now his lifestyle and canonical finances don't really lend themselves to it.
If he were to get a pet in game, I could see him going for an office betta. I think fishkeeping in general would suit him pretty well, actually, since it combines nerdy bio/chem knowledge with relatively low maintenance -- he'd get really, really excited about aquarium cycling, and it would be slightly sad.
