Question for you!

Brad and I was discussing how much DC confuses me, he was surprised because he finds Marvel harder to follow. So, now I'm curious about which one other people think is the more confusing one. DC comics or Marvel comics?

It might be because I'm a relative DC virgin, but fuck and hell Marvel confuses me. Even though I used to play a character from 616 canon, it confuses me. Every time a big event comes up or some ~*world changing thingy*~ happens I'm just kinda BWUH? It doesn't help that all my favorite characters get character derailment and/or inevitably turn up in shitty books (HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU EMPATH AND NORTHSTAR). But with Marvel, it feels like for twists and turns and ratings and plot, they just pull cheap tricks that confuse me.

I can make sense of Marvel, but DC is just convoluted as anything and I don't even try to get it. :( I DON'T FUCKING UNDERSTAND ANY OF THE CRISES

IT MAKES NO SENSE

NONE OF IT MAKES ANY SENSE

LMFAO THAT'S WHAT CONFUSES ME TOO. THE CRISES. I can't for the life of me get it no matter how hard I try and it makes me feel so dumb

[identity profile] thing4telepaths.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Does not understanding it prevent you from understanding the regular titles, or are just those events confusing to you?

I don't even try to understand the crises anymore. And when people try to explain them to me I just go D:

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS THAT IT CHANGES EVERYTHING

[identity profile] supergabbie.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're equally confusing in their own ways, since it's half a century worth of canon and dozens of writers working with characters and plots that no one can agree on. FFF I tried rewriting a character history recently and realized first hand that it circles in on itself. Sob.

I get confused with both, with DC slightly moreso, but that's mostly because Marvel has those really-useless-but-sort-of-helpful 'THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME' things at the beginning of each issue (for the most part). From what I've seen, DC doesn't and that confuses me.

[identity profile] fuckyeahpurple.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
They're both hideously confusing, but in different ways. I could rant and rant about this, but I'm biased at the moment, BECAUSE GODDDAMNIT, CLINT HAS SO MUCH EFFING CANON, I DON'T EVEN.

I find all the Crisis stuff really easy.

It's only LoSH, certain things by Grant Morrison and X-men I find confusing.

[identity profile] fuckyeahpurple.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
The X-Men are just in a class of their own, because god knows I can't figure out what's going on there ever.

DC confuses me sometimes because I basically only read JLA (not anymore), JSA, and magic character stuff titles. Not that they have their own titles, other than Zee. Magog doesn't count. Part of my confusion is that characters like Nightshade or Enchantress or Blue Devil or Witchfire will show up very randomly for a panel or two and I'll read issues just for them.

I think most people don't understand what's going on in DC because they didn't read titles like Day of Vengeance or Shadowpact, though.

As for Marvel, idk, since I don't follow it at all. I did (just barely) more than ten years ago, but to get back into it would take a lot of time and effort and not being lazy. :/

I once got coached into playing Kendra Saunders, AKA the second Hawkgirl.

I have never been more confused in my entire life. Hawkpeople continuity makes me cry so damn hard forever.

But then again, I've tried to follow all the Marvel world-spanning stuff which leaves me going "Bwuh?" a lot. Even with Andy patiently talking me through it I was confused as hell.

/plays a Marcel C-Lister who gets almost no screen time, likes it like that

Okay, so the truth is, I don't read DC outside of Booster Gold and the last Blue Beetle series. So uhh. That's probably why DC makes little to no sense to me.

Marvel sort of does. Except when they ignore their own continuity, or decide to rewrite something for giggles. Also sliding timelines. Fucking sliding timelines.

I don't follow DC, but the thing that always killed me about Marvel is how EVERYWHERE everything is. Even to follow one character you have to be reading ten different titles. For instance, you can't just read Amazing Spider-Man and know what's up with Peter Parker. To get the whole story, at the same time you also having to be reading Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Marvel Knights, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the list goes on and on. I understand cross overs, but seriously, come on now.

But maybe it's the same for DC, I don't know.

[identity profile] badhorsefan.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And then they have the crossovers where part one is in New Avengers, part two is in Friendly Neighborhood, part three is in Amazing, so that if you're just picking up Amazing Spider-Man you are so horribly lost.

DC for me, but that's because I've spent so much time reading up on Marvel stuff, and I mostly stick to the trade paperbacks to try to read arcs and crossovers at one go. and when I say DC I really just mean the whole crisis thing, because I've recently been picking up Batman tpbs and I get them perfectly.

BUT I see brad has posted about it in gds so I will go and read that post after this and hopefully it will have done what wikipedia could not and EXPLAINED THE CRISES TO ME. :>
