So uh. Late last night, Sanji stole a boat.

It's mostly so I could shuffle him out of the city before the nightmare plot, because I'mma have enough on my plate with that. He's sailing south until he finds islands and has an improptu vacation. Feel free to scream at him or congratulate him.

Police-cast, advice: should I post it up on the police blotter as if it was reported, so they can respond? I'd like to have IC consequences for this but IDK how to go about it. SPOILERS, the boat actually belonged to the mafia or drug runners or something, it was storing contraband which he'll find somewhere on the way. But still, IC consequences beyond freezing his balls off until he gets far south enough. That'd be fun.

If you want police involvement for catching him or something we can try to work it out, unless you want it to go another route, or you can do a handwave of police arresting him whenever he gets back--all depends on what level of involvement/playing out you want.

BUT as for consequences, uhmmmmmm man I don't know. I was thinking in regards to it being a legit boat he would get thrown in jail or, if he had an awesome lawyer, something like a huge fine and community service. But if it's a criminal's boat lol I'm not entirely sure how it would be handled, since I doubt the criminal would be pressing charges. I'M NOT ENTIRELY SURE HOW TO GOOGLE AN ANSWER FOR THIS......but if I would LIKE to assume that the person he stole it from won't be pressing charges for obvious reasons Sanji would be perfectly fine and not be doled out any punishment.

If anyone knows better than me, please pipe in.

yeah, see, that was where I started scratching my head, too, and decided to ask for advice. It's a criminal's boat but it's also a really damn expensive sailboat - it's possible a harbormaster or someone else would have called it in to the police, even if the owners don't press charges.

I'd like to do something with it, but probably not jailtime. If you guys have any open cases involving drug runners or something, we could always magically have whatever's on the boat be evidence, so after some scuffle/chasing/attempted arrest, they have to let him go because he turned over evidence or something. NOT SURE just brainstorming here. :D

Seeing what you said to eppy, even if the harbormaster reported someone's boat being taken there isn't much I don't think can be done if the owner doesn't press charges. If the harbor was a closed sort he could be charged with breaking and entering that, but even if Sanji had himself on tape saying WHEE I STOLE THIS BOAT if the owner doesn't want to do anything about it the police can't.

For breaking and entering a harbor I'm sure that could be a fine and community service as well.

It's on tape, though. So at the very least I suppose he could now end up on the radar, as a Type To Be Kept An Eye On.

Oh, yeah, def they'd be suspicious of him. But he would be pretty low on their BAD GUY RADAR, BUT IF ANOTHER BOAT IS STOLEN, OH BOY WATCH OUT SANJI.

Oh also if you want him caught out on sea he can be totally caught by coast guard.

I'm with Tobyfs here. I don't think a criminal housing contraband would report it stolen, just on the off chance if the police do find it, lol look at all this contraband. I think they'd be more prone to going "well fuck," and blaming a rival drug ring or just you know, getting a new boat and pretending nothing happened.

Assuming it was reported and Sanji was charged, I think it would depend highly on the cost of the boat, and how good the lawyer was. And without the criminals pressing charges, I don't think it would go to trail?

Shit I need to go back and look over my Law 1 notes, but I'm pretty sure that without the owners pressing charges, it would end up being a matter they'd settle with their insurance company, assuming they had insurance on that boat.

That makes me wonder philosophically, whether criminals take out insurance policies on their high-end property despite it being used for illicit activities. Something I doubt anyone would know off hand, lol.

It doesn't help Sanji that, like the pirate he is, he broadcast the incident and isn't denying it. And wouldn't, when he returned, he'd just do his best to evade capture.

Well, for now we can go with, someone at the harbor called in a theft they witnessed, but Sanji's going to be gone for a while so there isn't much that can be done about it at the moment anyway.

Of course, I wouldn't mind a closer scrutiny on him for having done this publicly, because it would just encourage him to do more.
