[the setup]

The young man stood in the shadows of the castle, as though a being of shadow himself. He was tall and proud, a knight whose golden skin was accented by locks of jet black hair and eyes the same color as that which the first spring rains created, when they fell upon the bare stone of the mighty mountain's peaks. It was an apt metaphor, for until recently, his life had been in winter, and she had brought the spring. The snow that was falling softly outside, occasionally illuminated in bursts by the flickering candlelight, seemed only to serve to accent the warmth that she had brought with her, from the day that she had first appeared, and illuminated radiance with her kindness and her wit, like the sun.

He was here tonight, a dark knight errant, as he should not be, but this night of all nights he could not bring himself to stay away. Not when it was Christmas, and he had already long since given her the gift of his heart.
