[Inwardly, Luck debates with himself how much responsibility he can really be expected to take in this situation. If Firo is to be believed, Czeslaw is considerably older than Luck and probably capable of taking care of himself.

This time isn't like what we're used to. It's likely you'll need someone to at least pose as your guardian if you want to be able to come and go when you want.

I've done that before, it's easy. You just tell whoever's asking that your guardian is waiting outside or at your destination.

I'm not sure you'll find it that simple here.

Why not? People are stupid. They'll fall for pretty much anything, right?

If nothing else, I think you'll find yourself inconvenienced if you have to keep finding ways to put off well-meaning meddlers.

My family is on good terms with the Martillos. I'd have to answer to Firo if I didn't offer to help.

[Beat. Then his voice becomes more serious.]

Probably not. But you have to admit, ours is an unusual case.

[There's a pause, and then he adds, more gently:] I don't intend to let you eat me, if that's your plan. I'm simply prepared to take the risk.
