C&C 2020

Someone call for a dystopian future au? Sometime around 2013 (THIS IS NEW, GUYS, WE'RE JUST SLIDING THE SHIT HITTING THE FAN FORWARD A FEW YEARS OKAY), the government in the City decided that they'd had enough of these superhero antics. There was a nationwide crackdown on metas, requiring registration upon penalty of incarceration. The network was shut down, and many residents were scattered to the winds. There are a few that stayed in touch, however. That's where you come in.

For some of you, this might be from before your time. Not to fear! Since it's a highly flexible splinter universe, there's pretty much no such thing as canon. Retcons abound, either as allowances for contradictory canon information (except for the premise, of course), or even just if the player wants to change something around!

So, use this post as a free-for all. New characters get new projected histories, dropped characters can be said to have come back, and old characters can be reexamined or given more story. On Saturday, an open post will be put up in [livejournal.com profile] cnc2020 proper, so use this time to work out information and pimp this out to players who're eligible but may not see this (you can also ahead and start your own posts in that comm)! Remember, any character that has been played in maingame is automatically good to go.

VIC SAGE

[personal profile] nottheanswers 2012-01-06 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
nothing new here

Vic is, for all intents and purposes, a ghost.

When everyone else was moving underground or registering, Vic was finding secret, subtle ways to infiltrate and subvert the new regime. It wasn't long before he was imprisoned.

He was inside for six years, until an escape attempt that was complicated and didn't seem to end very well.
Word has it he died then, but rumors of a faceless spooks mucking things up arise, graffiti'd question marks in public places. The methods are only getting subtler and sneakier, but also more widespread. It would seem almost impossible that a single man could perpetrate them all.

Whether The Question still exists as a man or not is largely unconfirmed, but his status as an urban legend is only growing.

GWEN'S IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS LAST TIME. Since she's had nasty experiences with governmental agencies, everything in her screamed that this is not good. So she ran the second the Network shut down and stayed as quiet as she could until she knew she had Carnage under control.

And then? Well, then she met up with the resistance so she could fight back. Specifically, she's focussed on getting people out of imprisonment since she's not exactly sneaky. Like, at all. So anything other than smashing things and scaring the shit out of people with all those fucking teeth and... tentacle type things... are things she's not so good at. But she is good at the scaring people and getting other people out of bad situations. She actually may take a little too much enjoyment in the first thing, but what can you do?

She mostly hangs around the City, as dangerous as that may be. It's partially to keep an eye on Jess and partially because, well. She's not sure where else she would go.

nill (age 26)

[identity profile] faired.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
She went to school, and began to excel in her studies once she mastered reading, writing, and sign language. Nill only uses her semi-telepathic ability with people she trusts, finding it preferable to simply write or sign with anyone else. She eventually graduated from a local community college in the City, and got an apartment by herself somewhere near the center.

When she realized how bad things were getting for imports, she decided that she wanted to do something to help. And so, Nill opened an orphanage for both native and ImPort children. She works hard to keep the place going, and even though it's rather small, it has turned out more well-adjusted children than any other orphanage. She makes it a point to teach the children she takes in to accept one another, whether or not they have super powers. She herself tends to keep her wings hidden beneath suit jackets and the like (she eventually got complete control of her latent power, and is able to not lolify all of her clothing), but lets them out now and then to emphasize her point that not all ImPorts are bad or scary people (no matter what the children think of Damian when he visits).

She does, however, use the orphanage as a sort of resting place for members of the underground Resistance operation. Nill herself makes no open moves against the government, and will continue to remain neutral so long as they let her run her orphanage in peace. But, just in case, she does have an emergency portkey to a safehouse (courtesy of Tonks), and a space portal to Kanaya's orphanage so she can move all the children there in a pinch.

scathach (age really fucking old)

[identity profile] spadassin.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
After seeing that the government was cracking down hard on ImPorts, Scathach did the only thing she felt was right at the time: she removed herself from human affairs, and took a trip back to her native land. She settled in a little cottage near the Isle of Skye, keeping mostly to herself. She regretted leaving the Institute and Cassie behind, but she knew that it was necessary. Until she was needed, until things were bad enough, she needed to stay away. It was not an Immortal's place to meddle in the lives of humans, no matter what had been said about her.

The day she found out the Institute had been shut down, an entire village was wiped clean off the map.

Scathach was completely recluse until a friendly group of Imports found her. Slowly but surely, she was drawn back into the world, but settled permanently in the U.K. She only takes part in Resistance activities when she feels it's necessary, which isn't very often at all. She only gives her location to those she trusts most, whose numbers are few.

gemma doyle (age 28)

[identity profile] sovenance.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The crackdown came as a surprise to the ImPorts, but the government was completely prepared. They hadn't forgotten about the young woman who had once turned a part of the City into a perfect working model of Victorian-era London. They came for her just hours after the registration act passed, deeming a mandatory registration necessary in this particular case.

At first she resisted, of course. This was her first mistake. They used force against her, aware of what her powers could do and with whom she had lived when she had first arrived in the City. Fear does strange things to the mind, and she couldn't fight back after seeing their weapons and the coldness in their eyes. She went quietly after that.

The facility on Long Island was strange and cold, and she could make neither heads nor tails of it. She was kept there for nearly a year, in which time she was poked and prodded, questioned every day, but otherwise left completely alone. Solitude also does strange things to the mind. She wasn't Rakshana; she didn't know how to deal with isolation.

It might have driven her a bit mad.

But one day she was released. She never found out why. She was given the clothes she had been taken in, which were strangely still in perfect condition. She was dropped off in front of her old house, which had gone to ruin during the months she had been away. She could hardly bear to look at it. She remembered her friends in the City, but didn't know if they were there anymore. She didn't really want to know.

And so she left. For London, because it was the only place she really knew anymore. Not quite right in the head, but right enough to find a small apartment to live in and a quiet job at the library. Sometimes she could use her magic, but most of the time it came and went in spurts. She tried to keep to herself, she tried to forget everything that had happened during her months on Long Island. And for the most part, she succeeded.

Except for the nightmares.

rikku vaccarro (age 28)

[identity profile] clumsiness.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
When things in the City started to get bad, Santo and Rikku skipped town, looking for a place where they could just live quietly and pursue their various interests; Rikku wanted to tinker with new machina, and Santo wanted a place where he could punch whatever he wanted and not get in trouble. Nevada was the answer: not only was it a desert (which Rikku loves, obviously), but there was plenty of room for them to train and such in their free time. They keep contact with people who decided to stay in the City, and also those who migrated across the U.S. as they did. Rikku managed to create something that was akin to a Garment Grid, which allows Santo to take on a human appearance whenever he wants. Even though her eyes are a tell-tale sign that she’s an ImPort, Rikku refuses to wear contacts to cover them unless absolutely necessary.

After several years of dating, Santo and Rikku tied the knot in Vegas at a little ceremony with some witnesses that they pulled right off the street. Who needed a fairytale wedding, anyway? It was the thing that everybody saw coming, but nobody expected.

A few years down the road, little Chavvi Angela Vaccarro came into the world. Whenever anybody asks how this was possible, both Rikku and Santo just answer, “Science.” Because that is the answer to all ambiguous questions in any universe. They still do the occasional superhero thing around Vegas, but otherwise they mostly just keep to themselves, raising their daughter with the derpy loving care that only Santo and Rikku can provide. Rikku is currently four months pregnant with the second child (they want it to be a surprise but spoiler: it's a boy).

LAST TIME ON CNC 2020

The Monster had spent the first few years in the sewers. He lost track of most of his friends. When things were looking up, and his darkness cleared, he'd venture aboveground for food or panhandling. Those days were few, and mostly he lived on scraps. He had lost touch with almost everybody, but if he ran into another Import who needed a place to hide, his darkness was always open.

A couple of years back there was an incident. Something happened. Someone died. A building got destroyed. He doesn't talk about it.

He had been in solitary ever since. He was never let out of his cell. The Monster hasn't said a word the entire time he was in there, but he started thinking a great deal.

When he was finally let out by Vivi, he started being a bit proactive. He decided he was never going to locked up again, and he had the strength to make sure of it.

And he was more determined than ever to track down his friends again and make sure they were okay.

MICHAEL LANE

Michael Lane has spend the last four years of his life in an asylum.

Rather, after killing a handful of authorities in the City (and a bunch more of government sympathizers), he was finally shot, captured and thrown in a jacket. Whatever great madness he already suffered from multiplied due to the taunting distance of the Suit of Sorrows, locked deep in the same facility. The powers of Judgement he holds have also grown exponentially, yet are dismissed by his keepers as the ravings of a madman.

Right now, his life is one consisting solely of delirium, overmedication, beatings and voices. The quality of life outside of the facility's walls are hardly of a concern to him.

SHERLOCK HOLMES

[identity profile] sh-consulting.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock is now known as a 'Consulting Rebel'. He has been underground since day one - his knowledge of disguises and his ability to mislead people proving extremely useful in order to keep his identity completely covert.

For the imports, he runs a variety of services, including producing new identities, finding safe houses, covering up illicit activity and occasionally orchestrating breakouts. He doesn't work explicitly with or for the resistance movement, though his services are open to them as well as to anyone else. His services can be bought a variety of ways, though the currency he deals most with is information.

John had come back, before everything had started, but as a fighter himself and unable to back away from injustice, he had gone and gotten himself killed. Sherlock had not been the same since.

Whispers of him exist all through the underground, known only as 'The Consultant'. But if you find one of the Baker Street Irregulars, they might be able to get your message to him....

Ziggy would likely make regular use of Sherlock's services. He's experienced, certainly, but not nearly clever enough to handle all he wants to accomplish on his own. Knowing someone with these skills is out there and available would be an invaluable asset. He'd be happy to share all the information that comes his way with the consultant, as well as whatever else of use or value he may be able to trade.

The City was never the one Damian truly wanted. He was too focused on Gotham and his birthright to realize how many opportunities the City gave him—friendship, family, and a way to be a hero without losing touch with the people around him. Alas, nothing gold can stay, and when things got bad Damian’s old inherent anger began to stir. For a while, it was Batman and Robin, as always—fighting for freedom as much as for justice, now. But when Damian turned sixteen, the mask of a kid sidekick began to chafe. One argument became the last straw, and he left.

Suddenly, the al Ghul side of his heritage seemed so much more relevant. By nineteen, Damian had created an underground empire, building off black markets and resistance groups. He got people in and out of the United States, sold weapons and supplies, and was an information broker. With safe houses and HQ’s all over the world, Damian came of age in London and Venice, Istanbul and Tokyo. But eventually, his true legacy called. He came back to the City, and he and Dick reconciled. Finally, Damian became Batman.

Another few years past, and Damian reconnected with some of his old friends. A mission went wrong, one day, and Damian’s identity was compromised to the government. For the past few months, he’s been lying low, living with Nill. At age 24, Damian is a dark shadow with a far reach, just coming back to terms with his humanity.

Donna Troy never wanted a fight. The City had once been her great hope of a normal life, where she could be all parts of herself at once—the artist, the mentor, the hero. So if she hesitated in those first few crucial years, it was understandable. But that doesn’t mean she ever stopped regretting it. Early attempts to cooperate with the government soon proved useless; Donna Troy fell off the grid entirely, and many believed her dead.

That is, until Wonder Woman appeared. Ruthless in her methods, this is the hero Donna became after totally abandoning any civilian identity. She lives from place to place, going where she’s needed, and never staying anywhere long. Embracing parts of her Amazon heritage she never thought to before, she became a leader of a network of young woman who’d she’d trained—not Amazons in the traditional sense, but trained in their ways.

But maybe, in some ways, Donna Troy still did exist. As the woman who visited Dick Grayson and his strays from time to time, or still remembered the birthdays of old friends and would stop by to see them. But those moments are few and far between, lost to golden symbol she feels she has to be.

Clint Barton never experienced the war over registration in his home world, but he was affected by it enough that the City’s version of it induced an explosive reaction in him. There were probably some very rash and bad decisions made at this time, and things splintered. When the dust settled, he and Bobbi went underground, consolidating resources and creating a spy network to fight this new and massive threat to their way of life. Their organization grew, found allies, and had a strict mission—it seemed large enough to consume the couple’s entire lives, taking up all their time.

But it didn’t, quite. Because Bobbi and Clint still found time to start a family, and six years ago one Francis Barton was born. Clint’s son is a lot like him—big-mouthed and stupidly loyal—especially to one Catarina Maximoff, daughter of Quicksilver and Firestar.

So basically, Clint leads two very separate lives: one as a head operative in an underground resistance (we all hope that he eventually got better at covert operations) and the other as a father. Guess which one freaks him out more. Just go ahead and guess.

Pink would have been fairly cooperative with the crackdown -- not happy, but not making too much of a fuss, just trying to live his life -- but for the fact that Ziggy went rebel, and his obligation to one of his few friends tipped the scales.

He goes along with the Martian, tailing after him and helping out with resistance efforts however he's able. But as it turns out, there are reasons why you don't let unstable musicians with history of dramatic mental breakdowns in your seekrit underground movements. At some point, something happens. He snaps. Or as he would call it, he adapts.

He takes on an entirely different set of mannerisms and dress -- sleek, efficient and unabashedly military. He starts airing... unpleasant views, in his off-time.

Let's face it, he goes a bit neo-Nazi.

Whether he stays with the resistance after this... adaptation, or goes completely turncoat and tries to sell out whoever he can, I haven't decided. He has potential for both. Thoughts?

Tsk tsk. Pink, you so crazy. Ziggy is disappoint.

I think there'd be a lot of conflict if Pink is all too open with his 'opinions'. Ziggy would not put up with that shit. He would directly inform the guy how full of shit he is and tell him to cut that shit out.

Aradia's never been a fan of authority, and sixteen is clearly old enough to make your way in the world, so she skipped town shortly after the crackdown. It pretty much seemed like any chance of getting back home was gone, so she figured that if she can't be a guide through the dreams and memories of the dead, it was time to pursue her other passion: becoming Indiana fucking Jones.

So basically, for the last eight or nine years she's been travelling to uncharted lands, hoarding adventurer cred like a squirrel in fall and bringing back souvenirs that may or may not be stolen from Egyptian burial tombs.

She comes back to the city only every two or three months, but that doesn't mean she's been out of touch-- her best friends growing up were online, after all. She'll drop off the grid every so often to spend two weeks in the Amazon or get lost in the Sahara, but otherwise she does her best to call and email her friends.

Ziggy comes from a dystopia that was crumbling when he left. A controlled and fearful world. So this is not really that 'new' to him. However, being thrust back into this sort of lifestyle will be devastating.

He'd go into hiding rather than registering, having a natural aversion to that sort of thing and a healthy fear of what it means. He'd do what's in his power to help establish an underground network for those who choose not to register and try to gather together those who are against it. He'd rebel in a big way, increasing that fight and involvement as time went on. He'd shake off his fear and feel more 'at home' in fighting against the new world order. Partly he'd be trying to make up for past failures. He would even become a leader for anyone that will follow him in fighting back against the powers that be. Sabotaging what they can and protecting others from capture.
It would change and toughen him to some extent. Those would be the only changes, though, since Ziggy wouldn't really age in that amount of time.
He would cease hiding his inhumanity in any way, almost flaunting the differences between himself and the non-metas aside from when he would need to remain hidden to move through the public.

PLACEHOLDER TIME

Ted Kord

[identity profile] thelionharted.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
WHEN LAST WE LEFT OUR HEROES, Ted had Booster. Now, though, he doesn't! He has, sadly, been forced to register in order to keep his company running. But he runs an underground one on the side (and in a spare warehouse), building ships/gizmos/spying things for anyone who needs them. He may also do some transport runs every so often or give people rides in the camouflaged Bug.

[identity profile] batmantled.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He leapt to the new fight without a backward glance, working to locate missing imports, acquisitioning new identities for people in need, and building an ever expanding network of freedom fighters to depend on. Resources were scarce, new costumes rarer, moves much more frequent, but at the root of everything there was Damian to look after and a legacy to uphold. A cause to fight for.

Then Damian left – left too soon and left angry - and in his absence Batman Inc was reborn, both as a tribute to the broken partnership and a clearly pragmatic attempt to consolidate resources. Since then he’s expanded, bringing new blood into the fold (including two new Robins) and stockpiling open checkpoints for Bat soldiersmen throughout the world. He has to struggle now to remember that half-forgotten past; to remember Gotham on a cool night, the sound of Alfred’s voice, his mother’s hand in his hair when he was small and afraid. But as long as there are innocents left to save he won't be giving up the fight.

Conflicts come and go in the land of the living, but for a shade like Deadman it's just another party he's not invited to. With the initial crackdowns taking place, Boston forsook what humanity his City powers had allowed him and now wanders about his limbo-like existence as he had always done.

But occasionally he lends a hand, possessing an influential player in the registration camp and works towards discrediting them. It can take months, sometimes even years. And every time it gets harder to scrape his identity back together after the split. But a guy can only take so much boredom.

Nymphadora Tonks never registered. If not registering meant that she had to live the life of the outlaw than so be it. It was the principle of the thing.

It wasn't the life that she had ever imagined for herself but she had it better than most. She was still a Metamorphmagus which meant she could blend in and disguise herself. She still had her wand which meant that she had a way to defend herself. Tonks could get the things she needed to survive. She could still apparate which meant she had a means of transportation.

She would be damned if she was going to sit on the sidelines and do nothing.

"My name is Cassie Holmes. Division took my mom from me. Right now, the future I see doesn't look so great. The good news is, the future is always changing, in the largest of ways, by the smallest of things. They've been winning a lot of battles. Now it's our turn to win the war."

Funny how things turn out. I had hope back then, I really thought we'd make it, I mean, we almost did. But then we ended up here, in this place and all the visions, all the bright things I used to see went away. It's all chaos now, crazy and hard like needles in my eyes and screaming in my head and...

I can't draw it anymore. It's too much, it carries me away and I can't see anything else... sometimes for days.

Was this what it was like for Mom? was this why she finally stopped, let division take her and drug her so she could do what she could inside and let the rest go?

People try. Friends, people that had become family, they all try but I drift away. I just... keep going and going and going and going a million miles away. And... I'm a burden. In the end, they're just putting themselves into danger so I remove myself from the equation. I run from the government and my friends, find shelter when I can.

It's easier than it sounds.

I visit, when I know I'll be clear enough to make sense, when I know the government's not watching. Someone gave me a device, some way to contact the resistance, send warnings. I can't remember who, I'm not very good at the past anymore, but the warnings... I send them when I can. when I understand.

That one's harder than it sounds.

God, who would have thought there'd be something worse than Division?

Sirius:

Sirius stuck it out until Ruka gained adulthood. He hid his wand and played the gregarious but harmless shop owner/mechanic for years, then went underground quick-like and IF THE OTHER HP WIZARDS ARE INTERESTED worked to create a secret, unplotable living area similar to Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade. Once that was done, he became something between a guard dog, auror and Snatcher, with the goal of nabbing magical folks as they appeared/were captured and getting them to safety.

Tavros:

WHEN LAST WE CHECKED IN WITH OUR HEROS, Tavros, so obviously, helplessly alien, could never pass under the radar. He ended up in a government facility, his time mostly taken up with endless and uncomfortable tests, but was occasionally trotted out when Godzilla or some other massive monster reared its head and needed pacifying. Redbird was able to find the secret base and bust him out, and they had reached something like safety.
