sadly i don't know much at all about ygo outside of cnc so i don't know who's even from gx (i was about to guess the bakuras but i guess that...isn't right?)

The Bakuras are from the original series!

Basically there's four major branches to the franchise: original/Duel Monsters, Duel Monsters GX, 5D's, and ZEXAL. The original is the one everyone's familiar with, which is what Yugi/Bakura/Kaibas/Alastair/etc are from. GX takes place about twenty years later and is set in a boarding school on a volcanic island; protagonist is Judai, who later fuses his soul to that of his past-life-the-genocidal-king's dragon boy/girlfriend. 5D's is the one with motorcycles; Kiryu, Bruno, Ruka are from that one. ZEXAL has a silent X and fancier hair than all the rest.

GX is the only one I haven't watched yet, but I don't think I ever will (as I'll get three episodes in and realize I could be watching ZEXAL instead).

i'd gathered some of that already, and whatever ruka and bakura each told vic about their hometowns, but i guess us not having anyone from gx right now would lend much to learning that way
have we had anyone from it in the past year?

Yep! Dark Bakura is actually the final villain from the original series. He's a godmoding asshole, in which I mean the final arc is actually a tabletop roleplay and he keeps changing the rules and powergaming and using bullshit like AND THEN I TURN THE HOURGLASS AND UNDO YOUR LAST MOVE to prevent Yugi from winning. Also he kidnapped all of Yugi's friends and threw them into coffins. He's basically amazing.

I want to say they were 2009, but we've had a Judai and a Johan from GX in game.
