AS FOR THE OTHERS
Ruka confuses Santo in that she hits all of his SMALL CHILD MUST PROTECT switches but doesn't seem to actually want that. The idea of someone her age who is actually smarter and more mature than him boggles his mind so he isn't sure how to react when he wants to find the guy who took her eye and slap him around for a bit and her response to that being "No" instead of "OH THANK YOU MR. ROCK GUY". OUTSIDE OF THAT she's good to talk to and puts up with him when he's being an ass, which is all Santo requires for friendship.
Shinji has his own confusion when it comes to Ruka because he remembers the girl from a year ago pretty plainly and knows how different she is from the present Ruka (not even counting the eyepatch, which Shinji is curious about but he isn't going to be a jerk and start probing). Aside from that though he can talk with her and hang out and not feel weird at all, which is pretty amazing as far as Shinji is concerned. The fact that they're both mentally traumatized snarkers probably has a lot to do with this.
Also he thinks she's cute.
As for Yuma, Shinji thinks he is dumb, but in spite of that (OR BECAUSE OF IT) is a genuinely good person and it makes him a bit jealous that he can't be as KATTOBING, mainly because Shinji thinks he knows more about the world and that just trying really hard won't actually get you anywhere. Plus he reminds him of Touji sometimes and that just reminds Shinji that Yuma could totally die at any time and it would probably be his fault because it always is.
