Jim likes Max! She kind of reminds him a little of Chekov in the fact that they're both super smart but both still kids so he's not exactly sure how to treat them. He tries to treat her like an adult because he respects her as a person, but he still sees her as a kid and sort of wants to look out for her? Because he knows what can happen when teenagers don't really have anyone looking out for them and he doesn't want that to happen to her.

So he's got this weird sort of thing going in his head where he really likes Max and hanging out with her, but it's strange because she's still a kid, but he still is going to hang out with her because he likes her and wants to make sure she's okay. If he thought in terms of familial relations, he would probably eventually slot her into something like a little sister spot because of that. But he's not close enough to her to actually... think in those terms even though the way he acts is something reminiscent of how he would treat a little sibling if he ever had one. IF THAT MAKES SENSE...
