Well that was unexpected!

Candy is a strange girl. The first video of hers that he saw gave him the impression that she was politically-minded, too smart for her own good, and ready to assume leadership just because she had an insider’s view that other people didn’t. His instinct was to challenge her and not do what she said, since why should he listen to her? As far as he was concerned she was untested and arrogant, and he didn’t need to put anything on the line for her.

Then he fell in with the attack on Vulcanus anyway, mostly because his friends were signing up and he wasn’t about to let them walk into a firefight without him. That was Candy’s plan, and it turned out she’d been right about a lot of things, and that maybe the assumptions she’d been making were justified. That didn’t mean that he liked her, but it meant he respected her enough to listen to her even if he still hated how politicised she seemed.

On top of all that, the way she talks to him grates with him. She doesn’t take any of his crap, she won’t back down if he’s aggressive or difficult, and she’s likely to be aggressive back. That’s the kind of attitude he finds attractive in girls. Which is inconvenient since he doesn’t want to give any quarter with her, so all in all he’s likely to be prickly and argumentative when he talks to her. He’s equally likely to fall in with future plans of hers, and with other people he’d be more likely to argue for what Candy says rather than against. She pushes his buttons but she’s not wrong. And of course that irritates him all the more.
