It was my birthday. My real birthday. My ninth. I had sent invitations. To those I considered friends and to all my classmates. I had reminded my parents. No one came. No one remembered. No one wanted to help me celebrate. It was a few days afterward that finally I asked outright - and the answers I got were so dismissive, so uncaring, I knew that it was foolish to assume it had mattered at all.
