Initially he was confused at having this bubbly cheerful chick act so happy to see him always (so few people are) but when he relaxed more he realized it was just the way she was, and that her pleasant exterior masked someone with interests so happily congruent with his own. Tech and explosions?? Also her boyfriend is a huge bro, and it's not an exaggeration to say Ghost is really fond of them both.

She's good for Max, too, and he desperately appreciates someone who can manifest more of a "normal" environment for her that he's aware he can't give. He knows Rikku is friendly for her own reasons but he still feels like it's a debt he should repay at some point.
