Cape and Cowl: The Trading Card Game

Hideous Zexal furrow

-Goal is to deplete your opponent’s City Points (like Life Points in Yu-Gi-Oh.) Each player starts with 100 of them.

-Three types of cards to accomplish this: Character, City and Event. Fifty cards to a deck, five cards in starting hand, max ten cards in a hand.

-Characters are ImPorts, our characters past and present. They have hitpoints, a special ability, and an attack strength. Attack strength may have a type (Physical, magic, psychic, etc) that can affect certain things. Characters who aren’t much for combat may have two abilities instead, such as the Major, or characters can have no abilities at all and just attacks

-They generally screen CP from direct attack- to hit City Points and win the game, you must first remove your opponent’s characters, although there are cards and abilities that affect CP directly.

-Characters are sorted by class into Hero, Anti-Hero, Civilian, Anti-Villain, and Villain, which can affect certain cards: i.e. the ‘Federal Sponsorship’ City card gives Hero characters an attack bonus while in play. A player can have up to three characters in play at any given time.

-In terms of scale, Bob the NPC Cityzen would have 5 HP and 5 attack as an ordinary untrained human. The max would be 100- a City-levelling attack.

-City cards are persistent status effects representing places and NPCs; up to three can be in play at a time. Special cards and abilities can destroy City cards. For example, the ‘Import Clinic’ card heals your characters by 10 HP each turn it is active, but an opponent can use the ‘Apokayak Attack’ Event card to take it out of play.

-Events are one-time effect cards that are played and discarded. They’re generally based on plots and in-game happenings. For example, ‘Port-In Wave’ allows a player to draw three cards when played.

-All cards are ranked by commonality for trading purposes based roughly on how useful or unique they are. For example, I made Jack Bauer a Common card because he has relatively weak stats and an unreliable ability.

-Each turn a player can draw a card OR play a card OR remove a card and discard it or put it in their hand (this removes any damage it has taken). Players can also make one act- an attack or ability use- with EACH character they have in play. Example: on her turn Zoe draws a new card for her hand and attacks with Cityzen Bob while using Cityzen Lisa’s special ability.

These rules are a rough sketch, and everyone should feel free to play with the mechanics and the template at their leisure. So without further ado, let’s make some cards! Brit is a flawless person and has actually made up a downloadable template for editing your own card images- you can see the results of her work here. Colour scheme is Blue=Hero, Grey=Anti-hero, Yellow=Civilian, Orange=Anti-Villain, Red=Villain, Black= City/Event card. Alternatively, for those not inclined to image editing, a form:

Make cards, post them, praise each other’s work, discuss and react! Feel free to ask if there are any questions about rules or stuff.

ETA: Template and blank PNGs available here! New colour schemes will be posted when ready.

Characters
Card title: Seras Victoria
Hit Points:30
Class: Hero
Quote: I fear nothing now.
Attack: (Physical) 30
Ability: Harkonnen Forgo Seras' normal attack to make a direct attack against your opponent's city causing 5 points of damage (Physical). This is usable only every other turn.
Commonality: Rare
Other notes: Seras will not attack if your opponent has either Jack Bauer, or Alucard in play.

Characters
Card title: Boyd Langton
Hit Points:5
Class: Villain
Quote: What is it you truly want?
Attack: None
Abilities:
Imprinting: Flip a coin and choose an opposing character. If heads, Boyd can use the target's attack or ability this turn.
Summon GPS: Boyd boosts the attack of one other character's physical attacks by 5.
Commonality: Uncommon
Other notes: Boyd is potentially very powerful, but extremely fragile and is best used supporting a solid line up of tougher characters who can take the hits he can't.

Also many thanks to Jesse for helping with Boyd's abilities.

It was about this time that I realised I had... never actually played a competitive card game. Consequently, I have no idea if these are over or underpowered, or what. Heh.

Attack: 5 points
Ability: Rally - Draw two cards.
Commonality: Rare

Characters
Card title: The Major
Hit Points: 10
Class: Villain
Quote: "My friends, it has often been said that I like war."
Attack: N/A
Ability: Mastermind: Draw three cards into your hand.
Blitzkrieg: Flip a coin. If heads, destroy one opposing City card of your choice.
Commonality: Uncommon
Other notes: In keeping with canon, the Major is useless in combat but deadly through his ability to summon minions and resources, and strike behind enemy lines. He's useful for beefing up a weak hand or removing an annoying City card.

Characters
Card title: Calvin
Hit Points:5 HP
Class: Civilian
Quote: "Everyone's a slave to routine."
Attack: N/A
Ability:Ethicator: choose one character on the field. For one turn, change their Class to something of your choice.
Duplicator: choose one character on the field and flip a coin. If heads, that character can act twice this turn.
Commonality: Uncommon
Other notes: Calvin mainly functions as a support character. His Duplicator ability is terrifying if it works, allowing another character to attack twice, use an ability twice, or a mix of both, something that is ordinarily impossible.

MONSTER is an event card, fight me

Quote: "Ia! Ia! The Thing That Should Not Be!"
Effect:Destroy up to 3 opposing City cards, minus a card for each opposing character in play.
