C&C 2020 Someone call for a dystopian future au? Sometime around 2013 (THIS IS NEW, GUYS, WE'RE JUST SLIDING THE SHIT HITTING THE FAN FORWARD A FEW YEARS OKAY), the government in the City decided that they'd had enough of these superhero antics. There was a nationwide crackdown on metas, requiring registration upon penalty of incarceration. The network was shut down, and many residents were scattered to the winds. There are a few that stayed in touch, however. That's where you come in. For some of you, this might be from before your time. Not to fear! Since it's a highly flexible splinter universe, there's pretty much no such thing as canon. Retcons abound, either as allowances for contradictory canon information (except for the premise, of course), or even just if the player wants to change something around! So, use this post as a free-for all. New characters get new projected histories, dropped characters can be said to have come back, and old characters can be reexamined or given more story. On Saturday, an open post will be put up in capeandcowl2020 proper, so use this time to work out information and pimp this out to players who're eligible but may not see this (you can also ahead and start your own posts in that comm)! Things started going bad for Duck long before the crackdown. When she was ported back into the City she was excited to be able to see Rue and Mytho again, and be able to talk to Fakir on equal terms. (Even if he didn't return her affections, he was still her best friend.) But they had all gone. And so had Amaterasu's flower shop. And and so had the Young Avengers/Blue Beetle home. And the friends she remembered were changed, older. The City had suddenly become a much lonelier place.

So now she works minimum wage jobs, one after the other. She doesn't quack so often anymore, but she doesn't have the habit completely beat and it causes her no end of trouble. The law comes down heavily on her every time she quacks, try as she might to explain that it's a reflex. And then her employers find out and then it's back on the job market.

She doesn't earn enough to take those ballet lessons she wants so badly. At 24 she's probably too old to ever make it as a Prima Ballerina anyway. She keeps her head down, and sometimes she wonders if it wouldn't be for the best to get ported back. Sure, she'll be a plain old duck again, but at least she'll be free.

So Martin refuses to register on principle, fleeing into the streets. His first name is common enough, so he keeps it. His last not so much, so he stops using it. Not a great sacrifice, he's been a Martin longer than he ever was a Septim.

Restoration magic is the only power Martin bothers to use. Charismatic and innocuous during the day, people don't ask him too many questions. It's only inside his underground clinic at a seedy corner of the city, free of charge (unless you bring books, he can't refuse books) and prejudice for any of the imPorts, that Martin makes his stance known.

On the one hand, he heals quickly. On the other, Akatosh do those look painful.

Alexander here would be a fairly common sight on the news, actually. As of the registration antics, he decided, fuck that noise, and... well, it would in all likelihood have gone down in history as the only time several fighter jets lost a fight to a bull-drawn chariot. He drained that magic fountain in Central Park on his way out, too.

After that, he returned to Asia and began to rebuild. His first stop was Macedonia, where he quickly disposed of the rulers and placed himself in charge. Renaming the capital Hephaestia, he built up an army with surprising speed, helped at least in part by his reputation. From there, he swept out through the neighboring countries, rebuilding his former empire with shocking speed. This is helped by a rather sizeable meta representation in his army, as he jumped on the chance to recruit people who were interesting and powerful, and dissatisfied or angry with how the City was treating its imports.

He is, for the most part, continuing his former methods of letting people essentially rule themselves under his name once they have surrendered, and surprisingly enough, the places conquered by him are actually enjoying a pretty damn good level of prosperity.

After making a pit stop in Egypt and taking Alexandria again, as is only proper, taking it as a second capital for his kingdom. From there, he swept up into the former Persian Empire, and with his tactics, supplies, and frankly more than a bit of cheating involving magic and a second army, he managed to take up through Georgia.

Then he stopped his progress at the borders of Russia, instead seeking to expand out to the other side. He has been quiet for about six months now, solidifying his power in his current empire and making plans on how to take on Russia. So his empire would be, roughly, from Greece over to Georgia, down to Saudi Arabia, and over to Egypt. He has also set up an embassy in the City for the Alexandrian Empire, assuming he has yet to have war declared on him. He is also poking around surreptitiously for Resistance members to recruit.

I am not actually sure how viable all of this is, especially since it's all... world-wide consequences, so if there is a problem or an error or whatever, let me know, I can change shit.

WITH CHELL I HONESTLY don't have much of any idea. It's a common fanon idea that she's going to get cancer from all that gel she practically swam in at the Enrichment Center, but I feel like she's too much of a fighter to die due to some disease. Especially when it's only 8 years into the future.

Having been living the life of a hobo, Chell easily avoids registration, leaving the City as soon as she senses that her freedom will be compromised. She heads out to the midwest, continuing to live life outside, knowing how to forage food, build shelter, and live her life under the open blue sky. It was as though she never existed in this universe.

There's a rumour, however, of a bright glowing orange oval somewhere in an abandoned warehouse. For the most part, it merely remains a swirling orange mass, and upon being touched the person only feels the wall behind the glow.

But every now and then, when a large, scraggly-looking raven flies out of said warehouse to perch on a lamppost outside, the glowing orange mass opens to reveal a portal. The picture through the portal is ever changing. Sometimes it's a large field, other times it's a cave. The portal remains open for a day, free for anyone to enter at will, especially those that need a way to escape.

Okay sorry, new backstory, because the old one was crap

The last thing Vash did before he went underground was blow up the Knivescave. He used explosives, and then he set fire to anything that was still left. The cats went to good homes but the greenhouse was a lost cause. He could not afford for any evidence of Knives' powers or his own to remain.

His stated reason was to destroy any research of Knives' that might have been dangerous. But the real reason was that Plants were more than just metahumans. They had been used as power sources, electricity generators, terraforming agents. Vash did not want any evidence of this to reach the government. If they discovered this, or they got hold of his genetic material and tried to clone him, it would be disastrous. He might be an idealist, but he wasn't a fool, and he agreed with his brother on this one point: there must never be another Tessla.

Vash' powers were not public knowledge, so when he went missing the government didn't waste too much time on him. When the search was off, he went underground, joined the resistance. He teaches the recruits marksmanship, and still never takes a life.

For a living, he publishes essays on love and peace and human rights. His pen name is John P. Smith.

Having got his company up and running, Xanatos signed on with the government and threw his support behind registration. He thought that he was "normal" enough, they would leave him alone. This is a dystopia, Xanatos, and you are wrong. Within a few months, the government "persuaded" Xanatos to help out with upgrading their technology. Xanatos tried to double cross them. The feds blew up his house. Now, he works for the government both on the field and out of it, fighting the resistance in his snazzy robot exosuit or helping the government build better prisons.

He's lost almost all connection with the imports, except any who also have decided to work for the government. That's what happens when you're a big fat loser who sells out to the man.

Long story short, Anya is alive and kicking. She didn't go down when ImPorts started to go down, and is currently hiding wherever she can, maybe with another Spider-something, maybe on her own. Either case she's bitter, she's angry, and she's honoring her Venom-like costume by being extra violent as of late.

Anything else I'm open to suggestions, all the suggestions.

Ron Weasley

Ron is going to be fifty soon enough, which isn't a big deal if he doesn't think about it too much. There are fears tied with the passage to time, but they don't have much to do with this place. They have to do with missing home.

This place has its own set of problems, obviously.

Ron didn't register. Living apart from society isn't much of a big deal. Wizarding society back home, after all, is completely separate from Muggle society. The trick is, you know, simply seeming to not exist. So that's what he does. Ron Weasley doesn't much exist.

That is, of course, only if you didn't know he existed in the first place. If you did know, bully for you. The ability to find Mr. Weasley grants one access to whatever help he can offer. This includes things such as transport, protection, shelter, charmed items that may come in handy, candy that does silly things, and more.

Who cares about his backstory, all we need to know is he's Beard Finn.

But idk he'd probably register just for the sheer fact he's dumb like that. But then he'd still try to hero, but in the dead of night, secretly, with his muscles and beards. He takes Terezi to cons so she can dress up, I think, iirc, but Mono's not around for me to talk to.

He probably would have registered because, like Finn, he's dumb, and he doesn't like incarceration, but since he's still in the employ of Isabela she probably would have told him not to be stupid, so he's unregistered and wanted just for the sheer fact he works for a lady like that.

If I really wanted to grimdark it up i'd say he was like now a ruthless killing machine but I can't even do that. Maybe he got better armor though. But only because he lost his old armor. When moving. The box marked "armer" was misplaced by the movers somewhere.

Bellatrix will never allow herself to be registered and monitored in the first place, and with Tom Riddle very much a part of the rebel side, unsurprisingly, Bella also is. She's loyal to a fault, so she can be counted never to betray the resistance. Also, if there's one thing she's good at, it's war.

Bellatrix will be a very visible leader of the resistance. She is not above terrorist attacks - destroying government buildings, assassinating important people, breaking into jails and setting prisoners free, etc. Tom is away somewhere completing his heartwarming journey into becoming Voldemort, so she's basically fighting and biding time until he returns.

Let me know if you want your characters to get into dubious alliances with her! And on the opposite end, if alliances she's previously had are now over.

The oppression and suppression of imPorts is deja vu all over again for Anders. There's too much in common with the Thedosian conflict between mages and templars. Anders is a mage. Now he's an imPort. Always getting the short end of the stick, this guy.

So much for his projected future as Most Likely to Become a Crazy Cat Lady.

Even without Justice as he is here, Anders would do whatever he could to support the resistance. He's got years of experience in Kirkwall's underground railroad of mages, and he's a gifted healer, which should make him a valuable asset to whatever group he's in. The question is really whose faction or cell he'd fall in with. Being brand-spanking-new here, I'm not sure myself. I think it's Justice that made him A-OK with acts of terrorism involving the deaths of innocents, so in the City present or future, Anders ought to have a harder time justifying (no pun intended okay) that kind of activity. Buuuut on the whole, his experiences in Kirkwall will have predisposed him to accept that to make a freedom omelet, you might have to break some innocent eggs. So ... it depends.

He's also a sucker for charismatic leaders.

Cruelty to animals will turn him right off, however.

So James' 2020 isn't so bad. He and Zee managed to escape the start of it all (links within links. linkception) and get married and have dogs and cats and whatever. He's also sometimes a scruffy hobo.

From the start they've cautiously helped with the resistance and these days they're travelling around (mostly thanks to Zee's teleports) and providing intel, reconnaissance work, fake ids, hiding and the like for any who need. Bond likes to keep his old contacts open, so possibilities for visiting old frienemies and also chances to meet people he doesn't know, kay :3

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock, unable to pass as a normal human thanks to his Thought Projection, went underground almost immediately. Keeping up with his network of Import contacts meant that his work shifted dramatically - no longer solving crimes but instead committing them (of a sort).

Known only as 'The Consultant' save to a few close contacts, his specialty was information, and helping other imports into hiding, but after years and years the monotony of oppression grew too much and his skill set expanded. Terrorism would be the closest word, though he would be reluctant to call it so. Tactical Preventative Strikes would be closer to the truth.

He has 'died' several times, his death faked impeccably - whenever anyone got too close or if it became clear that he was still alive.

Constantly 'on the case', Sherlock has been unable to forget anything that has happened in the past seven years - and as such has been growing more and more unstable, and often gets lost in his own mind. He is still incredibly dangerous and incredibly capable.

Andromeda Tonks

What's that saying -- fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me?

Not unlike Erik and some of the others from her world who had already experienced one eliminate-with-extreme-prejudice hell-war, Andromeda was not ready to be registered and cowed into behaving. She keeps her alliances loose for a reason -- because trusting Bellatrix, blood relative or not, is never going to come naturally to her, because becoming too visible a face at the underground clinic established by Martin Septim and Anders would put everyone in danger -- Andromeda has slowly decided to embrace the fact that she can be cunning, cuthroat, and cruel. The years haven't been kind to her, and she's slowly resorting to more desperate tactics both at Bellatrix's insistence and because it's starting to seem more and more needed. She's looser with her torture spells, but she's still struggling to see the good in people and not completely lose touch with reality like her sister has.

Tl;dr she'll be more hands-on with the resistance and willing to network with anyone who appears useful or helpful. Lyrie -- I could see her trying to get in with Batman Inc just to keep her options open, if that's cool?

Tavros is absolutely huge and has no human form, and is slow to react even without being trusting, so it was incredibly simple for him to be grabbed right out of the class he was in working on his vetinary license and put in a lab. He spent many years being alternately prodded at in various ways, and occasionally trotted out to pacify some giant monster or something. Despite the exploding collar, Tavros was never tempted to do anything other than subdue whatever animal threats appeared.

Eventually, Carrie rescued him, and he has since fled to the Amazon, probably after a stint in Florida. These days his contact with everyone is primarily through a crazy bat-technology phone.

Callie Maggotbone

Upon the crackdown on metas, I'd assume the D.O.I. got hit hard. Ultimately, she wants to see the end of the human race, and played ball for a couple years to try to find compromise, trying through manipulation to ease back into meta empowerment. Ultimately it was a failure and it became a fight, in which she fought to the bitter end. In result, the D.O.I. most likely disintegrated and Callie may have been taken down by the feds- spending a good year or two in imprisonment for conspiracy against the government. She eventually broke free, and found the resistance... and has been searching for the right situation to drag every last human being to the fiery pits of hell.
