hello GDS I have a not meme question!
So the network offers a bunch of different variations on how to communicate! Text or voice or video, private or public or encrypted or SUPER ENCRYPTED.
The question is, does your character have any particular method they use to communicate and why and what does it say about them? Has their preferred method of communication changed since they got here? Why?
yup sure am being deep and meaningful here betsy out!

RUKA opts for voice most of the time, but will match texts with someone if they started it, or will start with text with complete strangers so they don't dismiss what she's saying because teenage girl. She almost never uses video because she has always been self-conscious about how she looked, and LOSING AN EYE only made that worse.

WOW WHAT A DEEP AND MEANINGFL RESPONSE

Bucky uses voice, habitually— this is for a few reasons. Talking through a walkie-talkie thing is more intuitive to him than text/video messaging. And for a very long time in game he was missing an arm, which made text really hard for him, and made him kind of embarrassed about being on video.
Natasha uses voice because it lets her be private without being one of those douchey text-only people, who seem suspicious by default.
Loki uses video because he's an ~illusionist~, he likes having that extra dimension of body language/intimidation.
Jessica just matches the person who is posting.

When she responds with something else, it is either because the original poster did (though she doesn't always adhere to this) and more likely because she wants to hide her appearance for some reason. Usually when she's being a jerk and doesn't want to show her feelings or she's trying to be obnoxious. In more rare instances, it's because she's hurt for some reason or wants to add another degree of distancing herself from someone.
She vastly prefers video and voice, though, since she isn't really quick at texting and will sometimes even opt for that voice to text option. Which sort of defeats the purpose.

Since his canon update, he's much more conscious of it because he doesn't like his lack of normal hands being on public show where he can help it. Because of that he mostly uses voice, unless he doesn't mind the person seeing, or for some reason he's not thinking about it.
Also for the same reason, when he's out and about he tends to have his metal hands in his pockets because that's ~inconspicuous~.

Michiko seriously does not give a shit but will go for voice and video over text because she's not a huge fan of writing and those keyboards are fucking tiny man, who's in charge of that shit.

Jon almost always uses voice now THANKS MAX, though he'll occasionally use video to make a point, if he's hurt or annoyed or paranoid, he'll stick to voice. He also doesn't like texting but he hates even more when other people text at him. He can encrypt. Badly.
Ghost will use all three modes, whenever the situation calls for it, his encryptions are some of the best on the Network (in his humble estimation) and he has created filters and things for other people on request. He especially likes video of other people.

Max started out using nonencrypted video as her norm. She was used to vidcalls from home and found it to be her normal, and also she lacked a sense of caution. As of February, she switched to almost permanent voice or text, and has only slowly been coming out of that. She'll now use video if someone else uses it first, and she'll text if they text or if she's under emotional stress, but she still defaults to voice. She likes the flow of conversations in person better than text, but she also has a certain level of caution she didn't before. She encrypts pretty much anything personal now too!
As Batwoman, she has always used voice or text, and frequently encrypted. She also makes a point of differentiating between her texting styles as Max and as Batwoman - Max texts without capitals and frequently without punctuation, Batwoman uses proper punctuation capitalization etc. (spoilers this is something I'm super fond of! and she has once or twice slipped into Batwoman texting mode while Max, most notably talking to Eddie about Calendar Man.) The only time she ever uses video while Batwoman is to Batfamily members while super encrypted.
AND BECAUSE I CAN Rachel used permavoice unless talking to Tobias because she found texting frustrating and because video was far too public. Had I ever reached the point where I decided to canon update her to the end of the series, she probably would have ended up switching to permavideo because secrecy was pointless now. And she was incapable of encrypting the most she could do was private something.
... that got a little tl;dr

DAMIAN。 probably varies the most between the different choices out of all my characters. as robin, he tends to use video because the cape and mask are a big part of the persona. as a civilian he uses either voice or video, but probably video more often. either persona uses text if the person in question is texting at them. damian is pretty good at encrytions and uses them for things like protecting said secret identity.
DONNA。 almost always uses video! she likes it and thinks video chatting is fun. she also doesn't have a secret identity and so doesn't care too much for encrypting things unless the conversation itself needs to be private. if someone uses voice or text at her, she'll use voice back, though.
MONICA。 uses text and voice exclusively unless she's under encryptions. she's private by nature and trying not to be too big a presence in the city just yet.

FELICIA uses voice and video mostly for convenience, video usually only when she's making a post herself or trying to make a certain impression. She's usually doing stuff while she posts so text isn't frequent.
ELECTRO likes video, he almost always uses it and there's always a reason when he doesn't. It's more comfortable for him to communicate that way. He's a showy flamboyant type of guy. He texts occasionally but rarely, usually only if it's more convenient rather than any cagey reasons.
BOB also uses video a lot, because he thinks it seems more friendly and straightforward to let people know who they're talking to. Plus it's a visual record for him to sort of confirm his existant with. He uses voice sometimes but usually when he feels he needs to put a little detachment in between himself and others. Sometimes he'll just match what others use, too, but he doesn't use text.
HARVEY... favors voice and video about 50/50! How appropriate, right? At the moment he favors video more because he's sort of showing off his face (ironically, because he usually uses video more often as Two-Face than Harvey), but usually he only uses video if he's showing something off or making some kind of point. Voice is more private to him, so he uses it when he wants privacy or to just, make a statement unencumbered by his hideous face.
RA'S uses text, most often, because of the level of disconnect and it's kind of patronizing. But, since he's not keeping himself secret anymore, sometimes he uses voice to seem more connected to who he's speaking to.
MIRROR MASTER uses video! Because he likes being seen and being able to see who he's talking to when possible. I mean, mostly he goes for reflections rather than using the communicator; he likes being able to just impose himself whenever he wants to, on his own terms, take people by surprise and such.
MAX will use whatever is most presently convenient. He likes video because it gives the impression of openness and he can stage what the other person sees so it's a completely effective way for him to manipulate how he's seen. Voice has the companionable quality of being spoken to, still, but with a more modest quality because it's just listening, and on that level it seems like more attention is being paid to whomever he's talking to. He hasn't really used text yet but he'll favor it for when he needs to get a lot of information out and he doesn't really want to interact with someone on a non-business level right then.

Most of his stuff is non-encrypted and non-private, because Vash can have superficial conversations forever, and he tries to cultivate an impression of being the goofy doofus in the red coat, but the truth is he's a miserable pile of secrets so the moment things get personal, up go the encryptions and the privacy filters.

and she only uses text when shes feeling down or when shes texting privately.
Jennifer defaults to video. she likes people looking at her and she likes being able to convey emotions and hand gestures and everything through video. chances are, shes usually doing something too and videos a little more hands off. she rarely uses voice (i cant recall a moment when she does off the top of my head), and texting is exclusively for spamming people with pictures of pugs. (or just spamming Clint).
oh, Jen rarely encrypts unless she has to and shes pretty shitty with technology, so theyre normally crappy privates.
Namora also defaults to video. slightly similar reasons above, but in that she is the princess of Atlantis, everyone should revel her, she has nothing to hide, etc etc etc. its a lot that she wants people to be horribly aware of her and how powerful she is (even scared of her). so she doesnt voice or text ever. (mostly because she thinks texting is fucking stupid.)
Namora never encrypts or privates anything. she doesnt have anyone she needs to be personable with, so if someone else does it, shell just piggyback (though that doesnt mean shes incapable of encrypting). chances are, the only time she doesnt want people to know whats going on is when shes talking to fambly, and then she just talks in Atlantean because fuq the hatas.
Death switches around!! a lot of times, shell match the person shes talking to, and depending on the situation, she may vary from voice, video, or text. she has no preference with any of them and it really depends on whatevers comfortable for the person shes talking with.
Death doesnt private or encrypt unless the other person requests it, and even then, normally piggybacks.

He has encryptions that he bought off of Garak! (Literally, for a song.) He makes use of them. Sometimes, he will have things be private, and not encrypt them! This is deliberate, sort of intended as a smokescreen for tech-adept people who are only skimming the network. Everything both 'public' and 'private' are things he wouldn't mind anyone seeing, really. He is generally pretty careful about what is left public and what is private and what is encrypted. He may not understand the technical aspects of encryption, but he grasps the concepts of 'private correspondence' versus 'coded correspondence.'

Mitchell Prefers voice over video, but he generally starts his posts as video and shifts to voice later. He likes addressing the network as a whole on video so he can remain visible as mayor, and he thinks it's really important to constantly put things up on the network! Generally when tagging other people, though, he generally prefers voice. As for encryptions, he uh...tells the communicators to keep people out, and they self encrypt. He's one of the people that is really difficult to hack just because his particular power is just so obscenely odd with regards to the communicators. Also his comm is a dick, but it's grown on him. Generally, it tells him when new posts come up too!
Shade Communicates almost solely through video, and he appreciates the same out of other people. He's not exactly bad with texting or technology, but he really values face to face interaction, and he expects that out of the communicator as well. Although he would still prefer to just...creepily show up at your house and say hi. He does that a lot. c: Also he doesn't really encrypt, or use private functions. He's more likely to again, just swing by if there's something worth discussing in private.
Ozzie uses voice mostly! He still sees the comm more like a cell phone (which he doesn't really carry) and uses it like one more often than not. He's just a classic kind of guy, okay? Also he doesn't encrypt, he's not technologically apt. He can create trick umbrellas, but don't expect him to use a computer well. He just hits the private button. :(

Calendar Man uses voice primarily when commenting or on unimportant network posts. On his main posts - on holidays and stuff? He makes a show of it, ie dressing up (see also: father's day) or decorating his room (see also: valentine's). He texts sometimes if it's something he doesn't care very much about or if the other person is using text.
Captain Cold doesn't text. What is it with you kids and texting. He's Okay with video, but prefers voice. MOSTLY HE DOESN'T LIKE STUFF TO BE COMPLICATED.
Negotiator is perfectly fine with video (Reach tech uses a lot of holograms and stuff) - but would often use voice so people couldn't see him (ie - if he was talking as Khepri Romero but was too lazy to shift his appearance, or when he was stuck in a cage and that was embarrassing) - from now on expect a bit more video from him. He'll text too, because talking to text is weird, but he almost never uses capitals (he knows what they are, he can read english - but there are no capitals in his language so he habitually doesn't use them except occasionally for emphasis. Also he texts in Century Gothic rather than Courier because he's an alien and I think it's funny. Fight me.
Pherson is computer savvy and actually kinda thinks video is neat IT WAS WAY LESS COMMON IN 2001 OKAY - IN FACT WAS IT AROUND AT ALL I CAN'T REMEMBER :/ but he can use voice and text too, no problem.

Isaac usually uses video or voice but will usually match what the person he's talking to uses unless he's trying to hide something (like when he was suffering aftereffects from his Black Lantern experience). face-to-face interaction is something he's p comfortable with!

Alastair is a pretty fast texter but seeing as a lot of people tend to voice or video, he's gotten in the habit of using one of those more often than not. He'll still text pretty regularly, especially when he doesn't want his face or voice to betray FEELINGS, but sometimes he gets so worked up about something that he doesn't have the patience for text and has to use voice because it feels so much better to snarl at somebody when you can emphasize every other word snidely. His encryptions are a conglomeration of Decepticon/Cybertronian code and a few older StarkTech-brand progamming codes he picked up at work. He really took to Cybertronian encryptions and learned to use them via his linguopathy to really fuzz up any attempts at hacking him - that way if someone actually got through the code, there's still a language they couldn't possibly understand underlying it. Course Cybertronians can hack that but eh.
Sanji defaults to voice because it's like a den-den mushi. He's accustomed to talking to people through handheld telebug radios, so that's pretty much what he does, putting it on speaker and chatting at it. But he will use video to show his face to pretty ladies or anyone who pings a keen interest in him - foes, castmates, etc. He doesn't ever text because he'd be a single-finger typist and that's slow and boring. He knows his way around the private setting but he can't do encryptions.
Geddoe prefers the old-fashioned way of dealing with people, that is, face to face. So upon his first encounter with anyone, and any encounters afterward that are still in the realm of strangers/barely acquaintences, he will use video and only video. It's a sign that he's come to trust someone and/or maybe just maybe consider them a friend when he only uses voice, because he knows them well enough to allow them to hear his voice alone and not have to look them in the eye. Never never ever text because he doesn't know how. He does, by now, know the writing system well enough to read texts, unlike at the very beginning, but he doesn't grok typing and so won't ever text back. Besides, his fingers are too big and he always wears those gloves so ahahaha accidental flubbing words and god he would hate autocorrect so much. Besides, when he hand-writes something, he still writes in his world's text system, not Roman alphabet. Oh yeah and he fails at the private settings. He can piggyback on other encryptions if he replies but he just completely fails at even trying to private things. Sometimes he forgets how to do it, sometimes it's a subconscious revolt against the technology. He does have to remind himself or be re-taught how to use private settings fairly often.

However, when speaking with others, he tends to favor voice for two reasons. One, it frees him of the pressure of having to make sure he looks human at all times. If he ever slips into demon voice he can just pretend it's a cold or something! Two, he's a busy man and who has time to text in this mad world (even though his thumbs could use the exercise).

Klarion uses video most of the time, since he figured out how to use that setting and is keeping it on there, dammit! He is not a very technologically inclined witch-boy. Also, he's just generally lazy and texting takes up too much time.
no subject
Pietro uses voice because that's how he deals with most communication devices in canon! He used to record messages for Crystal in kind of an "audio diary" while on runs. I'm pretty sure he recorded them at his normal speed (read: super speed) and then slowed them down after. He's used video, but generally he prefers voice. He doesn't encrypted because computers think too much and that kind of scares him.
Stephen uses video because he's aware that his appearance is slightly disarming. Most people see him and think of a gentle, elderly uncle-type figure and that can be handy when trying to get information or help from somebody. While his hands work in the City, he's still not entirely comfortable typing with them, so text is really really not something he does. He's also not incredibly tech-savvy so filtering or encrypting isn't really a thing for him.
Victor uses voice or video. Voice if he's just talking to someone, video if he feels the need to make a display. His powers involve "external monologuing" so a lot of times what he's saying isn't really said, but between the mask and his own erhm... General brusqueness, it's hard to tell. It's not that his every thought is broadcast, more that any quips he might think and then rethink just come out. Or like someone narrating their own life.
Aoi uses video because that's the generally accepted form of communication in his time. Sometimes he chooses text because of the anonymity, but most of the time he's totally cool with what's essentially facetime. He can encrypt things and super duper encrypt them, but he's also a big fan of transparency so generally doesn't. He's far more likely to try and break someone's codes than use any himself.
Ollie uses voice because it's most similar to a phone call and that's what he understands. He's capable of using the communicator and at least filtering things, but. Phone calls make sense, alright. Call him old fashioned. :|
