kanayaaaaaa

is like, one of his favorite people in the whole world. he respects her so much and holds her in such high regard and he wants her approval and respect in return so badly. he adores her. she is one of the people who he listens to the most. if someone else and kanaya both tell him he's being stupid as hell he's much more likely to listen to kanaya instead of going on a huge spiel about how smart and awesome and great he is. he values her input and opinions a great deal. she acts as a voice of reason for him sometimes, and she definitely acts as a pillar of sanity among all the blatant craziness of their friends. she's a source of stability and comfort for him, and one of the only people he is comfortable enough around and trusts enough to simply be himself around her, sans a lot of his faux arrogance and ego. he can be honest with her. in times of trouble and emotional turmoil she is often the first person he thinks to turn to. he genuinely loves her with all his heart and he would do anything to protect her. he never wants to see her dead again, ever. he doesn't know or want to think about what he would do without her. she is his rock.

because she is his rock and how high the regard he holds her in is, it is all the more distressing the way she sometimes treats him as though he can't handle himself, and it especially upset him to hear her say in public to his kismesis crush no less that he can't take care of himself. he took that as her believing him to be weak. her insistent grudge against gamzee contributes to this belief, making karkat think she doesn't trust him to be able to take care of gamzee, or believe he's competent enough to handle the situation himself. her attempts to protect him without his consent have led to him believing she genuinely does not respect him, but he doesn't really blame her for that. he wouldn't respect himself either. who would respect that asshole. karkat vantas: what a douche.

another thing that hurt him was the red cape incident, particularly when contrasted with their interaction before prom. this was definitely the more serious bump in their friendship. karkat had been under the impression she accepted his blood color, but after the passive aggressive sewing of that cape into his sweater and the accompanying comment -- which karkat took to be mocking -- well, it unfortunately broke some of that trust he previously had for her. while he forgives her and accepts her apology, trust is a tricky thing, especially when we're talking about karkat and especially when we're talking about karkat's blood. he will be more cautious if the subject of his blood comes up with her again, less open with her about it, and her words on the subject hold less weight to him than they did before.

he's worried about her lately, though. he doesn't know how to help her feel better about herself or their situation or his moirallegiance with gamzee or the loss of her moirail. every time he tries he seems to make everything worse, and he's left feeling like a terrible failure of a friend. he wants her to be happy. he just isn't sure if he's able to make her happy.
