WHAT A DOUCHEBAG

eddie is karkat's polar opposite in a lot of ways, and this means they clash way more often than not. to begin with, his opinion on him had been "wow this guy is one smug buttface" and "also eridan wants to kill him and that would probably be bad" and "okay fine so maybe he's not a complete idiot". it wasn't until eddie put forth his proposal that karkat manipulate eridan into a bastardization of an ashen/pale relationship with eddie and a third party without letting eridan know that karkat came to the realization that, oh, shit, this guy is completely warped. in their interactions since it has slowly begun to dawn on karkat that he may have bitten off more than he can chew with edward nygma. he feels like he is drifting out of his depth and that he has no one to turn to if he should happen to get in over his head, despite what he made gamzee promise him. karkat recognizes that eddie is genuinely really fucking smart, and probably isn't someone you should fuck with frivolously, which i guess you could call a form of grudging respect. he holds a lot of disdain for eddie's obvious terribleness at feelings along with... well, eddie in general. there is a lot of disdain here, for his surprise noodles, his manipulative and underhanded tendencies, his tsking, BASICALLY OVERFLOWING WITH DISDAIN OVER HERE along with a very heavy side helping of mistrust. karkat would not trust eddie as far as he could throw him.

he is frequently made to feel uncomfortably vulnerable by eddie's falsehood detection which means karkat is completely unable to put up an adequate antagonistic front with him -- eddie knows when he is bullshitting. this is extremely upsetting to karkat, as eddie is one of the last people he wants knowing the real him. this has slowly begun to lead him into a less outright defensive stance in their interactions and a more evasive one, with karkat preferring to change the subject, ignore or sidestep the issues which he feels are too sensitive to let edward nygma in on. he's not very good at it yet, he's about as subtle as a brick, but chances are he will get a lot of practice.

eddie is really good at trolling karkat and winding him up and striking at his sore spots and making him feel beleaguered and frustrated and infuriated. their conversations are about as much a competition to karkat as they are collaboration. karkat bizarrely almost wants to keep the competition going, if only because eddie almost always wins and that drives karkat crazy. he doesn't like losing or failing and he especially doesn't like the way eddie is like, pretty much the first person to genuinely make him feel like a child who doesn't know what he's doing in comparison to him, the adult. he's stubborn and obstinate as fuck and he doesn't give up all that easily so he keeps on determinedly trying to get the upper hand and when he doesn't get it he gets more frustrated which makes him try harder and it is a vicious cycle that karkat should probably try to break out of. eddie makes karkat feel small and young and inadequate and he absolutely cannot stand it.

karkat has also started to question whether their alliance was really necessary in the first place. with eridan actually willingly contacting him to talk to him about stuff karkat has begun to wonder if he even needs eddie's help, or if he would be better off breaking the alliance and going back to attempting to keep eridan out of trouble on his own. this way of thinking is encouraged by the way the more he talks to eddie the more karkat is convinced there is something seriously off about this guy. he is beginning to feel like he should probably get out while he still thinks he can. he really can't shake the creeping feeling that this is going to end badly.
