Well, I've been thinking. I mean, I don't know if you've noticed, but I tend to identify with machines. A lot. There aren't that many machines that catch my attention as well as you have, though.

[ a calculating pause, as she eyes him a minute. ]

You'd be surprised. I had one in my office for a time. Not many of them are ones I could listen to all day.

suddenly. looks at her. ]

[ the movement draws her attention from whatever is on tv probably something hideous like flavor of love or something arrrrr. looking back at him, her eyebrows pinching a little. ]

[ ignoring the DID YOU SEE THAT BITCH SPIT ON MY FACE BITCH I WILL TAKE YOU OUT in the background...

he sort of looks really, really sheepish because suddenly she's sort of a person and what is happening and oh god what he's not good with people and she actually feels like people maybe right now. ]

Uuuuh.

[ her attention drifts at the outburst on screen-- she's less intensely focused, in this body-- but only slightly, only a brief glance away before she's back to watching him, carefully.

again: ]

What is wrong?

[ he opens his mouth to find himself utterly, totally unable to say those three simple words he's been fine saying all this time. it's terrifying, kind of. instead, he places a gentle (but sort of firm, too) hand on her shoulder, brushing off a stray lock of hair. ]

I―I dunno what t'say...

[ he drifts off into speechlessness, eyes worried but bright. ]

[ she stills when touched-- she isn't accustomed, even now, to human contact, and she dwells on the sensation of it for a moment before responding. ]

It will be fine. [ the corners of her mouth turn down a little. she doesn't understand. ] Tell me what is wrong.

[ he shakes his head, struggling with just vocalizing, bringing up these familiar but distant feelings because suddenly he just has no idea what to do. so:

he leans forward and, for a fleeting little lightning-fast moment where he's there one second and moving away the next, gives her a kiss.

then he looks again at her, uncertain. ]

[ it isn't as if she's never kissed him before, but this-- it's different. she can feel it, and the way her skin suddenly seems warmer, the quickening of her pulse. even after it's over, the sensation lingers. she doesn't even realize she's closed her eyes until she opens them and finds him looking at her.

the silence between them is tangible.

[ She eyes the box for a moment without reaching for it. She's never really been given a gift before, and she isn't sure how to respond. ]
