Kanaya is, for better or worse, one of the only people Shinji knows who really gets him, and the only one he's willing to commiserate about it with. With his crush mostly dealt away with, he's more willing to be himself around her and blunt about their mutually crappy situations.

Still, he respects her and admires her for being able to compose herself and act gracefully, even if she doesn't see it that way. Since he can't wish himself to be a better person, he wishes he was like her instead: better at faking it.
