they've spoken literally one time in two years, but you'd think the accumulation of so many mutual acquaintances means there's gotta be some opinion

and indeed there is!

conflicted opinions

because right off the bat, Ruka is biased towards disliking Kanaya anyway because of the whole Basically a Vampire thing. Despite preferring monsters and non-humans in general to humans, she's kind of biased against the undead what with the whole "arc villains of the canon being the vengeful resurrected dead." Whoops!

Then of course there's the matter of Eridan, or rather, the matter of "wow all this fucking violence" in the first year, which as far as Ruka could tell was probably done out of revenge for things done in their home universe, so there's more negative points for her. So many negative points!

But as far as Ruka was concerned, she didn't have any business getting involved with Eridan and Kanaya's not-thing, and knew she didn't know everything, so she just shrugged and deliberately decided to just not get involved with Kanaya at all.

It wasn't until, in the early(ish) stages of friendship (that she would deem it) with Karkat that some of the negative points were pulled out (to make a still negative but not as negative number)--when Kanaya died and Karkat needed someone to talk to, he talked to Ruka and one, talked Kanaya up, and two, illuminated the circumstances of her death.

Then, a couple months later, Ruka watched Karkat's memory theater in the labyrinth and got the whole Murderstuck White Science Extravaganza and, oh, what a sucky way to die.

Context mattered, and Ruka knows Kanaya is important to Karkat in a positive way, so in general she's personally trying to not... let that biased negative score affect how she reacts to Karkat hypothetically crying over Papaya King because things are rough with he and Kanaya, but that doesn't mean she's going to be cheerfully loose-lipped or openhearted when that "speaking literally one time in two years" is Kanaya trying to get information about Karkat from Ruka. As with (and likely exacerbated by) her problem with Eddie, Ruka really, really dislikes when--to her--it seems as though characters are treating her as a prop or a tool to get to a specific other person. Especially when she's certain that there's pretty much NO WAY Kanaya harbors positive sentiments towards Ruka due to the whole "actually friends with and also dating that asshole that killed her" thing.

so basically it boils down to "leave me out of this mess"
