Selfish? These people are getting to be who they truly are! You should be happy for them.
ropedin: (get your hand off of me larry)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-01 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy? [ What. ]

They're bringing themselves out into the light. It's a selfish happiness. They should keep to themselves. [ HJ had very peculiar ideals as to what is appropriate. Even without bringing sexuality into question. ]
tesselate: (in my mind)

[personal profile] tesselate 2013-07-01 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
If they kept it to themselves, they'd be lying about who they really were, and it would hurt them, that's what this is all about. Proving they don't have to anymore.
ropedin: (All they're good for)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-01 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And there's something wrong with that? It's subversive. It shouldn't be accepted or applauded. If it were, it would have been acceptable long ago.
tesselate: (11)

[personal profile] tesselate 2013-07-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Basic civil rights have been denied to many groups over the years, that doesn't make it right.
retropolis: (check your thin privilege)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. That's nice to hear.

[ He's clearly pleased, smiling, then he glances aside a little shiftily. ]

I'm just not sure they'd be my-- [ At risk of contradicting himself, whoops. ] Well, maybe. I suppose it can't hurt, just to-- uh, you really like them? I feel like everyone always has negative things to say.
tesselate: (cant stop wont stop moving)

[personal profile] tesselate 2013-07-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No they're really great, and, hey, if you're into books like this one, [noting that he is still holding the gay photograph book] then you can just imagine the romance aspect that way, too.
retropolis: (why is laurie rude)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not-- listen, it isn't-- [ He clears his throat, still looking away. ] Is that a popular opinion? Thinking the protagonist isn't a woman?
tesselate: (and you love the game)

[personal profile] tesselate 2013-07-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about popular, but it would explain why it reads the way it does. Like, okay, all of the crime stuff? Completely flawless. Like the author has done serious research there. And the emotional stuff is just. Wow. But then you get to the sex and it's -- I mean, I wouldn't know how to describe those things either, but that really only helps prove the theory.
retropolis: (discussing sally's butt)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know about that.

[ He puts the book he was holding back on the shelf so he can crossing his arms, leaning back a little and exhaling. ]

But if it was true I'm sure the author had a good reason for um, the unconventionality.
tesselate: (i stay up too late)

[personal profile] tesselate 2013-07-01 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, definitely! It's not bad writing at all, I just think maybe it's someone who isn't okay with their sexuality so they've written this story which is really about how they feel, but the protagonist is a girl because it's more normal to them - and if that's the case, i guess I kind of feel sorry for the author.

But that's all speculation, of course! Who knows what the truth really is.
retropolis: (ℳ | get it together dollar bill)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Who knows indeed. I'm sure the author wouldn't ever say so.

Um, but-- you never know, someone can always write one thing and feel another. Anything could have changed between when they were writing it and when they published it. It's impossible to know how other people are feeling. [ He bites his lip. ] Even assuming you're right, it's only... a fiction story.
ropedin: (It's not gay if it's in a threeway)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't it? They couldn't make it, so they were denied the privileges that were given to their superiors.

That's how it works.

[ Oh, HJ, no... ]
retropolis: (can I help you)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-02 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
It can. You could stay in with me more often.

[ Even though he knows that is (probably) not what Hooded Justice was getting at. Nelson adjusts himself so that they're essentially face to face -- chest to chest, more accurately, except even then it's Nelson's face that's pressed up against Hooded Justice. He breathes slowly, not really put off that they're bickering (sort of) as they awkwardly snuggle on the couch, fighting has always had a strange and equal role in their relationship. ]

What if we worked out a compromise? You don't have to say much, just be... just... don't avoid my questions. Even if it's just "yes" or "no." For example-- [ Nelson turns his head so that his cheek rests against Hooded Justice's shoulder. He lets his hand trail lower, stroking Hooded Justice's abdomen. ] Is this okay?

[ the phone lights up with a received text, which occupies Jim's thoughts for a moment, even if only to grimace at the number and delete the offending message immediately. It obviously wasn't that important. Or perhaps it was from that one nurse at Bones's new place of work, who'd greatly enjoyed the stir fry Jim brought over one day: a lunch he'd conveniently forgot to give Bones. ]

You know, that timeframe lines up suspiciously with when we joined Starfleet.

[ he gives Bones a nudge with his shoe, which thankfully are new TOMS and not too covered with the scum of the streets. It's near impossible to imagine life without Bones or the Enterprise, and even after everything, he'd rather not. ]

Five years of great memories, and what's the worst that's happened?

[ bad question, he notes mentally and changes it to something with a less unhappy hypothetical answer ]

You mean you weren't born with dark circles?
ropedin: (Wow look how badass I am)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-02 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ It was a tall order, at the very least. His secrets should be his secrets, and his alone. Conversing meant Nelson was getting closer. It made him cagey, because there was only so long that he could avoid the questions for so long, with Nelson asking for answers. Even 'yes or no' was going to get too close.

But he wasn't thinking about that too much right now. His brain was elsewhere. Nelson had played his cards right, at this moment.
]

Yes. [ He didn't have to shift much, to make things a little more comfortable -- or maybe a little closer. HJ let him stay where they were, breathing leveling out. This was the sort of bickering he could handle. He knew where this could go. ]

You could come out more with me, too.

[ His hand drifted a little lower, thumb making a small trail of strokes while it moved. ]
retropolis: (time to be overdramatic)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-02 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ Nelson rubs his hand lower, leaning his head back so that he can kiss around Hooded Justice's neck area -- just brief kisses off affection, since they're both still mostly clothed -- as his other hand begins to stroke Hooded Justice's thigh. ]

What about this? [ Another kiss, this time against Hooded Justice's shoulder, though Nelson pauses and wrinkles his nose slightly. ] You know I can't. I-if I could be out there as much as you are I would be, it's not that I don't want to.
ropedin: (All they're good for)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-02 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ The soft note of affirmation was softly killed at the tail end, when Nelson stopped, and his fingers dug in slightly. Nelson might not think he could, but Hooded Justice thought he would adapt, if he had to. He mulled it over, drifting lower still, till he was at the small of his back. ]

One extra night. [ He paused, waiting for protest, but kept going anyway. ] If I stay in more. [ His other hand, supposedly dormant, came to rest on his shoulder, holding him down. ] Once a week.
retropolis: (and I never was smart with love)

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-02 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ Breathing a little harder, Nelson leans his forehead against Hooded Justice's chest and curls his fingers to grip at the fabric of Hooded Justice's costume. ]

I'll try to, if you do. You can help staying in more than I can help being fa-- ... fatigued...

[ Face a little red, he adjusts himself slightly and leans back, tugging on Hooded Justice's noose to pull him along. ]

But I'll do my best. One extra night isn't so bad.
ropedin: (This is going places)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-02 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
[ The things Nelson would do for Hooded Justice. He thought it would be good for him, and perhaps help him shed the pounds he'd gained over the years -- for his health of course.

He let Nelson tug him along, not letting him get too far, instead opting to keep his hands where he'd had them, keeping them close.
]

No, it isn't. It'll give you less nights to stay up.

[ A touch pointed. He still didn't see the need to stay up, when he wasn't there, waiting for him, but HJ was the sort that wasn't going to understand. Not easily, anyway. Perhaps he didn't need to, but he did need to learn to accept it. ]
osreborn: (pay attention to me.)

Well--

[ Norman's eyes fall to his own tape, the file beneath it, before he looks at Danger again. He frowns at her, waving his other hand. He's irritated by her intrusion, but he folds the file he was reading closed and turns himself so he's facing her a little more fully. ]

I have to make sure it's accurate. If you had files maybe you'd understand, but even so I have the right to examine any of it. You aren't challenging me, I hope.
retropolis: ([mariachi band playing sound of silence])

[personal profile] retropolis 2013-07-02 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I only stay up when I'm waiting for you. When I say... fatigued I don't mean sleepy.

[ Lying back now, Nelson stares up at Hooded Justice, blinking meekly. He lets go of the rope, stroking his hand over HJ's chest again before he wraps his arms both around Hooded Justice's neck. He leans his head forward, sighing a little and glancing aside. He's getting a little tense, a little nervous, but he goes on: ]

Y-you think I'm just out of shape, but you don't know how hard I try. I don't like being unattractive to you. Even if I'm thankful you haven't left yet because of it.
ropedin: (So what're you doin later)

[personal profile] ropedin 2013-07-02 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ The changes had been the worst part of adjusting. Nelson wasn't the same, and Hooded Justice had a very specific Type. Age had made him fall from that grace, but Hooded Justice didn't exactly stop himself either. It wasn't just that he found this new environment difficult and unsatisfactory to make a connection in, although that's certainly what he told himself.

He wasn't exactly having difficulty with finding interest in Nelson. Even now. He pressed a little closer, hoping that would keep him from having to answer that. This was like presenting a prize, while not saying there was a trap between himself and his destination. He would need to tread carefully, or else he was going to be extremely sorely disappointed.

His noose swayed, brushing against Nelson's chest, and he moved to make sure the would fit.
]

I'm not going to leave because of that. I don't think it's getting in the way of much, is it?

[ He was finding less and less reasons to leave, even though a part of him thrashed just to get out. Now. ]

I would have been more inclined to believe and indulge an admission of curiosity.

[ there's something vaguely condescending in the way she says that-- and while she isn't being as contentious as she has been before, she doesn't straight-forwardly agree that she isn't challenging him either. ]

What would you suppose we should do, Mr. Osborn, should you determine that there is something inaccurate in your documents?

[ she stares back, her eyes unwavering. her face betrays nothing, except the way she frowns a little at what he says to her. she could just observe-- she's always been an effective spectator, disinclined to interfere when it would fail to produce a practical benefit.

but at length, danger closes distance, something vaguely impatient in her tone when she crouches near him, reaching for him.
]

Stop this, Harvey.
