Familiarity. Yes.

[ Dr. Gideon waves a hand, almost brushing the concept aside, but he looks at Hannibal like he might know something more. There are no answers anywhere else as far as he can see. ]

That must be troubling for you. Me I don't know, nothing is familiar these days... you really need to be someone to have a home, don't you? But you bring up an interesting point.

Sometimes anyone can be anyone. [ He looks at Hannibal, waiting for his response. Some kind of reaction. ] Yes? No?

[His face is unreadable, showing neither approval or disapproval.]

Sometimes. Do you intend to become this city's Chesapeake Ripper?

Is that your professional recommendation?

[ A little wryly, but only a little. Identity crises are serious things and Hannibal you are barely being helpful. ]

I hadn't planned on it. To be honest, it seems a little hollow. Although it would be extremely easy. Location is everything. [ With a tip of his hand. Gideon's humor has a dry sense of melancholy to it. ] If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

I'm not your therapist, doctor. I can only offer insight based on what little interaction we've had.

[Are you kidding, Hannibal is terribly helpful. He knows all about (inflicting) identity crises.]

But I can only imagine that living in another's shadow--one whose identity you tried and failed to take--can be very painful.

It's a good thing, too. I tend to be something of a "trouble patient."

[ "Failed" is such an ugly word to a narcissist, and he has to debate arguing it for a moment. ]

It's really the lack of shadow, that burns the most. I did do a good job, but some things just aren't meant... to be. Do you get what I mean? I know you're not my therapist, but in the interest of conversation.

[ And curiosity, and answers... ]

All patients are either trouble or troubled in some way. It's my duty as a psychiatrist to treat the pains of both.

[And yet fail he did, like an expert forger who cannot capture the soul of the original painter. Hannibal just continues to stare dispassionately at Gideon.]

It's difficult to be told who you're supposed to be, only to find out that you're not. But your recent murder was just a shadow, wouldn't you agree? Such mere reproduction can cause harm to both the original and the forger.

As long as you have the patience for it.

[ Gideon's cold enough himself that he doesn't find Hannibal's impassivity particularly off-putting, though he subconsciously seems to overcompensate because of it. It keeps any distress at bay, but not disappointment. ]

Truth be told, I'd really been hoping that he might be inspired give me some advice. At least maybe a little insight. A little misguided, obviously; the Ripper plays harder to get than I'd anticipated.

No real surprise then, I really don't know what to do with myself any more now than I did before.
