You'd think that having eight eyes, four extra limbs, and the mouthparts of an arachnid would prevent one from getting a decent job in a world that hated Ported.

You would be correct. In most cases, anyway. Being both an incredibly talented geneticist and the leading expert on organic/mechanical interfacing in the world helped with that. Being perfectly willing to perform experiments on fellow Ported helped even more.

In his time, he had discovered ways to completely remove the powers of at least thirty individuals, combining this with cosmetic surgery and psychological conditioning (brainwashing, in fact) to force them to behave like normal citizens. He had unlocked the secrets of ten others - seven with fairly run of the mill abilities (flight, teleportation, mild pyrokinesis, minor invulnerability, a lesser healing factor, enhanced speed, enhanced strength, and one odd fellow with the ability to always know where his car keys were) and two with powers so classified that uttering what they were could get him killed on the spot. He had discerned the DNA markers of those abilities, their sources, and found ways to transfer them to other individuals. He had augmented this with his own brand of technoorganic cybermodifications.

The beginning of the government's shadow troops. Natural borns with Ported powers. Deadly. Dangerous.

And without him, it would have been utterly impossible.

If his fellow Cybertronians had been aware of his existence, he would have been called a Judas, but he had been imPorted after the crackdown. It had taken him exactly fifteen minutes and seventeen seconds to convince the government that he was more useful to them with his powers as a consultant than without, and three days for them to promote him to the lead scientist in the Shadow Ops division.

They did not know he existed.

Which was how he wanted it.

He didn't care. He had no qualms about what he was doing, no moral or ethical dilemmas. He did not mind the human body he was trapped in and he did not care that he was not permitted to leave the compound.

He was endlessly patient. In the end, the only master he truly served was the Chaos-Bringer.

And when his betrayal came, it would make Starscream look like the screeching, ineffectual amateur he was.

When they came, they came for her. Managed to disconnect every landline and shut off every wireless connection in the area, pinning her in the lab she was born in. After that, it was just a matter of shutting off one database at a time, until she only had one to inhabit. Once they had her cornered, they could disable her.

They went to the trouble of tracking down her creator; he hadn’t been helpful. A drab little man who twitched and mumbled about code a lot, all they managed to get out of him was the program’s name and circumstances of birth. She was an accident, he said. Never meant to get out of the sandbox. He’d been trying to make a virus that could self-replicate and evolve, and he got her instead. He should have known not to name it after a fate.

In his own eccentric way, he was a genius. But his contact with outsiders was rare, and no one noticed he was dead for a good two weeks. Pity.

But they had learned that she, in a way, coded herself. They realized that the only way to stop her was to make sure she couldn’t rebuild her own awareness.

‘This is your ticket out,’ they told the best hackers and ‘cyberpunks’ - none of the suits realized that the word did not mean what they thought it meant, and none of the skinny, dark-eyed children with quick minds and quicker fingers wanted to correct them. A deal was made with an entire team of people who knew too much to be given free rein under any other circumstance: ‘Incapacitate the Lachesis virus, and we will let you go.’

Of course, the kids should have gotten it in writing. But that’s another matter.

‘Incapacitate.’ Not ‘destroy.’ After all, it might be useful in the future, and they had no way to recreate it themselves.

So they split her up. Peeled away each part that they could find, rooting through the layers of ever-changing code for lines that seemed to stay together. It was hard work, trying to dissect binary that was always rewriting itself. Not to mention she still had control of the speakers then. Many of the re-incarcerated young men heard static-filled screams in their nightmares for months afterwards. But they managed to do it (with the help of considerable incentive and three boxes of Red Bull), splitting up the program and keeping the parts all stored on separated drives, where they couldn’t do any damage.

Her memories were the easiest to lock away, separating them and writing them onto a CD, of all things. It sits at the bottom of some CEO’s desk, ‘City History, 2007-2010’ scrawled on it in thick black marker. A use for it has yet to be decided.

Her sense of humour, vicious as it was, ended up on a USB drive. An unknowing intern picked it up in 2014, thinking that ‘unmarked’ meant ‘unused’ in the old Tower. Plugging it into a laptop and accidentally freeing the snippets of code onto the internet, none of the higher-ups have noticed it was missing. A sliver of caustic wit roams the data highways, looking for parts of what it used to be and laughing at all the trouble it causes along the way.

Something she denied having at all was the first to escape: emotions. Why the faux-doctors breaking her apart decided to do it this way is unknown, but anything illogical she had that resembled human feelings were bundled together and kept apart from the rest. They didn’t realize that leaving fear and anger in the same place was a recipe for disaster. The irrational snippets of data snatched a stray wireless connection, vanishing into the ether. As he watched the digits disappear from his screen, the hacker responsible failed to realize that he’d left his cell phone turned on.

They caged her forethought, her planning, her intelligence, artificial or not. They kept it locked in the Porter machine itself; the only connection of any sort was the electric connection that kept the thing running. Any houses or companies within a three-block radius dealt with the fact that they weren’t allowed wireless internet of any sort. The Tower is a dead zone. They’re afraid to turn it off, in case that would leave the imports stranded here for them to deal with forever. As much as they revile the new arrivals, they fear destroying the only known way back. So she lives, sleepily choosing new Ported every few months, thinking of ways out, and above all, being bored.

But that’s the fracture piece that still possesses the most power, the one that could move things. In conjunction with the still-functioning machine, there might be uses for it. If one could, say, bargain with her, maybe agree to set her free – the odds are good she’d have something you want.

It’s just a matter of getting past the guards.

It was stupid and he felt as though it was a betrayal of his duties as a Decepticon, yet he knew it was a necessary thing. Interviews. Smile for the lady on the other side of the desk. Weave layer after layer of pretty lies and hope to Primus that he got the job, that he wheedled his way into Washington politics and maybe try to make some sort of difference from the inside. Or, at the very least, some way to know his enemy.

At this point he wanted mostly to blow the slag out of everything, but that hadn't worked so well last time.

Sighing, he shouldered his duffel bag and checked his hair. It was still darkening at the roots, and while he liked it better he realized that it made him look strange. His contacts at least hid his eye color. The vest... a little loud, but he had a day before the interview itself and significantly less loud clothes.

He stepped onto the bus, quietly showing his ticket and then sitting in the front, where he could see out of the window.
