I mean when you italicize text and don't close the tag. Because, hitting post comment will close it for you.

em is phrase style, i is font style. Basically, i is specifically italics, whereas em renders as emphasis-- so for like, blind people browsing the internet, em will be picked up by the speech synthesizer. i is more correct for things like titles of magazine articles or names of ships, but when you're just trying to say that you really mean something em is technically correct and has more support.

Ohhh, also that. Yeah, that can be annoying to read. It's almost worse when someone puts up a <textarea> table, and discovering that there isn't a single closed <td> or <tr> in sight. (I will admit to being lazy and only specifying widths for the first row of cells in a given table, rather than doing so all the way through the document.)

Okay, that makes more sense than the explanations I've read. Thank you!

I also hate the font tag. And tables, in general. Or coding on LJ. Because I got on the "separation of style from content" train so long ago that it pains me to type the font tag. Iiiiiiii'd rather not flip out over these things, though. On some level I kind of think looking at people's code is like looking up their skirt? Why am I so bizarre?

Coding on livejournal is a pain. I'm pretty terrible at abusing both old-style and new-style HTML/CSS/dafk;ldsf when coding things, but I am also a jerk, so.

I don't think it's bizarre! To continue the metaphor, I guess I'm simply the rude type who likes looking up skirts in order to better examine the inner hem and seam work of clothing as being worn rather than just look up actual patterns.

Chrome actually used to be a pain in the ass, and if there weren't explicitly-closed tags, they would cascade down and so you'd get weirdly formatted stuff at the end.

They've since fixed it, but it was still disgusting while it lasted :/

That is awful. No browser should be that strict on rendering, for all that I try to close all my tags, I get messed up. Once someone replies, you can't edit.

Like I said, they've fixed it... this was about a year ago, anyway, when it first came out.
