The bachelor uncle that everybody thinks never got married because he spent too much of his life maintaining his career.

The guy who comes to Thanksgiving dinner and other family functions with my married uncle.* He's quiet but he's really nice and he knows a lot--you just have to wait out some awkwardness before he'll open up. And after a while you don't think "oh, he has no place else to go, how sad"; you think "man, these dinners with grandpa feel kinda lonely if Bob doesn't show up".
