I was eight. Parents took me to the Himalayas. Dad wanted to find a mystical city from his childhood. Mom thought it was a fairytale. We went with my dad's business partner.
My dad slipped. Watched him beg his partner for help. The guy didn't do anything. He could've. He didn't. I watched my dad fall.
A bit later mom and I were running from a pack of wolves. We got to a bridge, the wolves cornered us. She made me cross it. I watched them eat her.
And that's the story of how my parents died.

I guess I should... share.
I was thirteen, and just managed to talk Batman into taking me on as Robin after Jason died. I saw on the news that my parents had been taken hostage by a cult and forced to land their plane in Haiti. Batman went to try and save them, while I was stuck watching news reports. He only half succeeded - my mother died of poison, and my father took a lower dose and went into a coma. For months, I visited him in the hospital, talking to him, while I was training and fighting bad guys, but when he woke up, I couldn't tell him. I had to lie to him all the time. But it was okay, and he met someone else, Dana. She became my step-mother.
And then he found out I was Robin, and forced me to quit. But I couldn't stay away, and he finally realised he couldn't stop me. That he shouldn't, because I was helping people, as much as he hated to see me go out into danger.
Some supervillains found out our secret identities, and they killed him. They sent someone to our house, left him a gun to defend himself, and killed him with a boomerang, right in his chest. He called me for help - I heard him telling me he loved me, and I ran inside and found him bleeding on the floor.
And that's how my real parents died.

[A smile.]
That's good.

Had. I had to put Dana in a mental hospital, she had a nervous breakdown after my dad died. And Batman wanted to adopt me, but I wasn't ready for it, so I made myself a fake uncle. I hired an actor, faked the paperwork, and tricked everyone for over a month.
And then they both died in an explosion that took out most of the city they were in.
After that, I let Batman adopt me. So in a way, Jason and Dick - the first Robin - they really are my brothers, by adoption.
But now everyone thinks Batman is dead, and he is... lost. Jason keeps trying to kill me, and Dick took Robin away from me, to train another kid. Batman's real son, Damian. I don't have anything left but my friends, and half of them died - some came back, but. I'm pushing them away, so I can focus on finding Batman.
[Pause] I really didn't mean to make this about me.

It's fine. I hate talking about myself, anyway. Better to help people than to dwell, you know?
[A pause.]
Sounds like being in your "family" is a bit harder than I thought. But, it's still better to have a family of friends than none at all, right? Even... Even if half of them are dead.
[IS NOT BRINGING UP LUKE FUCK EVERYONE]

[He will try to stop talking so much, honestly.]
Mmn. You know, I tried to bring one of them back? Tried to clone him over a hundred times before I was convinced it was a bad idea. And then he came back anyway, but I've barely talked to him. He had to follow me around until I couldn't stay quiet any more.
And I really appreciated that. But I still made him leave afterwards. He has his own life to get back to.

Ended up being one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Weakened my power and everything.

It'll all be okay when he's back.
Anyway, I don't normally have powers, so that's not a worry.

... I guess I have nearly died, uh. A couple of times - but they know me, they shouldn't worry too much. I know they will, but they shouldn't.

Don't make me nag you on this.

You can try.
