HAY GUYZ WANNA HELP ME WITH HOMEWORK?

So my senior project is all about Vampires from the romantic period onward. I have like, three or four books in mind, but I want to be reading something other than Dracula (for the third time), Vampire Chronicles (for the third time <3), and Twilight (from a critical perspective I now go "D:")

You know what you should do? Recommend some vampire books for me. I've read a bunch, and I love a good vampire novel anyway. They may or may not not be used for my senior project but hey! You never know.

How about a vampire comic? Stephen King and some other dude with art by the guy who did Nomad covers (lol I fail at names) are writing an original comic series about the American vampire and it's called; American Vampire

Other suggestions: the Sookie Stackhouse novels of which True Blood is based on.

Well, for the obvious ones:

In the Forests of the Night
Demon in my View
Midnight Predator
Shattered Mirror
Whatever other books she has out that are vampire by now. Persistence of Memory is one I think. And Broken Glass...? But that was the working title, idk.
If you don't know who the author is you should be ashamed young lady.

Companions of the Night - Vivian Vande Velde

idk I'll derp around and think of more later. For some reason I can't think of any right now.

The Vampire Plagues and Vampirates series are two of my favorites. They're pretty easy reads, since they're YA, but they're still amazing.

Also Amelia Atwater-Rhodes has some good vampire books. Demon in my View and Shattered Mirror are my favorites.

The only vampire novel I've ever really, really liked is Sunshine (http://www.amazon.com/Sunshine-Young-Adult-Robin-McKinley/dp/0441019137/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272010613&sr=1-1) by Robin McKinley. But that's probably because it has more to do with cinnamon rolls than vampires.

Carmilla is a novella about a female vampire and it predates Dracula. Actually I think Bram Stoker got a lot of inspiration from Carmilla. It was required reading in my Literature and the Occult class, considered more important than Dracula.

Also the Edgar Allen Poe story "The Fall of the House of Usher," can be interpretted in several ways, and there are some people who describe them as being the last of a sad house of vampires, especially since the sister pretty much lives through her own death and even exhibits superhuman strength in escaping her own tomb.

Uh, if more than books are allowed as sources for this...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - movie, series, comics
-- Would be good for showing how vampires burst into mainstream popculture well before the Twilight craze.

Kindred: The Embraced (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115232/) - tv series

Vampire: The Masquerade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire:_The_Masquerade) - vampires in roleplaying games

Interview with a Vampire - you know the one

Harry Dresden novels have several types of vampires
- Red Court - reminiscent of chupacabras based in South America, eat blood
- Black Court - Dracula type right down to stakes and garlic and sunlight
- White Court - Incubus/Succubus, eat souls/emotions
- Jade Court - mentioned in passing, based in Orient
Best books for this would be:
Grave Peril - Red Court, little Black Court
Blood Rites - White Court, little Black Court
White Night - White Court
Changes - Red Court

Dhampir - A Novel of the Noble Dead - by Barb and J.C. Hendee
--a whole series of novels (Noble Dead series) about a half-vampire woman who fights the undead for money (and later other reasons) in a fantasy world setting. Not your typical Blade knockoff, which I think makes it pretty cool. For one thing, she started the whole undead-slaying gig as a con artist because she didn't believe the undead existed and was unaware of her heritage or abilities.

I would definitely recommend a book called The Historian. Its a sharp twist on the Vampire myth while the roots are still solidly there. I really enjoyed the book. Just be warned, it's not written like a Vampire novel.

I forget the authors of both these books, but both Vamped and Fat White Vampire Blues are hilarious and awesome.

Okay, maybe not for your assignment, but just letting it known it's out there.

I'm pretty sure the only vampire novel I've ever read it Interview With A Vampire.

iirc, it was kind of ridiculous. BUT I HEAR IT IS A CLASSIC OF SORTS.

[identity profile] childoflimbo.livejournal.com 2010-04-24 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Someone already recommended it but the Historian would be really good if you're going to include Dracula in your project. It's by Elizabeth Kostova.

Kim Harrison has a series called the Rachel Morgan series (or the Hollows) that has a vampire as one of the main characters.

The Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce is a really interesting and dark take on the mythos. It's YA but doesn't read like it.

Some others:
The Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs
13 Bullets by David Wellington
The Smoke Trilogy by Tanya Huff
Blood the Last Vampire by Mamor Oshi
Anno-Dracula by Kim Newman
The Last Vampire by Patricia Rosemor
Children of the Night by Mercedes Lackey
Fledgling: A Novel by Octavia E. Butler
Vampyrrhic by Simon Clark
Renfield: A Tale of Madness by Kyle Garrett and Galen Showman
Vampire Huntress Legends by L.A. Banks
The Saint-Germain Chronicles by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
