Someone to paint the fourth wall with?

So one of the big things with my crack-addled canon is that the characters are, well, characters. The world as they know it is largely controlled by a dead man writing it as a story (don't... don't ask.) and Mytho is even ripped straight from a fairy tale. As such, the story and the characters have some preoccupation with fairy tale tropes, storytelling, and the nature of the fourth wall.

What I'm wondering and sparing the OOC comm from, is if there are any characters/muns floating around with similar preoccupations with stories/fairy tale type things/so on.

Yes, I know we just had a plotting meme last night, but I got there late (even if I used a placeholderp) and I really wanted to have some text in the post instead of just posting this image that makes a joke of Tony Stark's most well-known character trait.

I write fairy tales. Usually they get turned into comics.

I will happily talk more about this when it's not lol thunderstorm.

I participated in the 4chan thread that image was created in. Fun fact...

I've written some fanfic that explictly dealt with fairy tale tropes. Both what it means to be a storyteller and forcing old legends onto modern canons. For example, I did a story where JRPG SuikoIII Percival's backstory was explained in terms of the 12th century Arthurian Perceval ++ the quest for the holy grail. I haven't w/any of the characters I play in this game, but I've thought about it and am maybe working on one.

There's one canon Black Widow story that is meant to be based off a Russian folktale "the Night Bird" but I can't for the life of me find the original story.

There was also a "Marvel Fairy Tales" series that ran a while ago.

My hyperpretentious fanfic or this 90s Black Widow graphic novel?? B/c I tried googling "Night Bird" and did not come up with much. Except the Firebird but this seems like a different thing.

IIRC there was some good art with Marvel Fairy Tales? But I did not read all of them.

slsafkjashdjHGSJKFHDSGFLJSKFGD I WANT TO READ THIS STORY because I actually play/played Percival at [livejournal.com profile] suiko_rpg for two years. He's one of my favorite boys in the game.

Curious about your thoughts on his given surname. XD

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

verreh nice. I do approve. *applause* BUT WHAT DID BORUS SEE? I should know this but since he's Borus and not Gawaine (or Galahad) I'm derping a blank.

lmao yes the poor man being stuck as Fraulein all his life. God I miss playing him now...

In the context of the version I was working off of, some kind of ~grail vision~. I think. IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO THAT I WROTE THIS. But really, he just came to terms with who he was as a knight, that was the important part.

That makes sense. It was very poignant, I liked muchly.

Thank you! It's great that you play Percy, btw. Also yes, I call him Percy, he cannot stop me.

[identity profile] percivalthegale.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO he is embarrassed. :D

I wish I could play him all over the place but in panfandom games I really gotta have only one Suikoden character at a time. The playercest is too great (especially between Geddoe and Percival).

NOW IF SOMEONE WERE TO BRING NASH IN...well, actually, Geddoe can U_- at him too.
deadthenred: (yeah i'm good)

[personal profile] deadthenred 2010-07-13 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but trolling the knights is way more fun to Nash than attempting to troll Geddoe. BLAH BLAH UNSUPERVISED MISSION TO THE GRASSLANDS BLAH BLAH TOTALLY SEEING CHRIS'S UNDERWEAR. (really he swears)

But yeah. Geddoe and Percy are both SIII characters so it is a big deal there.

um. I have contemplated apping Grimmtales!Red Riding Hood. Also Fables is pretty great, and the only real American comics series I read besides Sandman. And I have a card game wherein you make your own fairy tales.

So yes. I do rather enjoy fairy tales. Not my superfavoriteever type of fiction, but I really do like them.

har har. har har. har.

Other than the obvious, there's a relatively common theory that Katurian is a character in one of his own stories, because he occasionally refers to himself in the third person and addresses the audience (even... when... dead...). The Pillowman pretty much crushes the fourth wall and throws bodies between the two sides.

Katurian is so depressing, he writes horrifically sad murder mysteries involving himself. :\

HE WOULD.

I haven't chosen a stance on the theory, but I think he's the kind of guy that keeps a running narrative of his whole life even if he isn't a character in the explicit sense. There's that one line he has in the play that's like "I'VE BEEN ARRESTED AND I'M PROBABLY GOING TO DIE this would make a great story. :|a" Priorities: he has them.

Uhhhhhhhhhh I guess Sanji counts? It's canon that he reads (or read, as a kid) fairy tales and books of lore, everything from Norland the Liar to an encyclopedia of devil fruit. It's where he gets his ultra-chivalrous ideals.

Not to spoil too heavily in case anyone wants to read the manga (AHAHAHAHHAA) but Norland the Liar was a fairy tale that is supposedly well-known among kids from North and East Blue that turns out to have been based on a true story. And the Strawhats end up pretty much putting an end to that story by getting involved in a centuries-old war.

I DON'T KNOW WHY DID YOU

it was all covered in the Skypeia arc. Which, actually, is my second favorite story arc after Water Seven/Enies Lobby.

AHEM anyway. At least Sanji also has a healthy dose of reality? He may idealize romantic relationships but he also knows how the real world works while he's waiting for his princess.
