How marvel treats is women is a big problem I have. Which while rarely showcased as beautifully as DC just did in an all star spectacular of douchbaggery, it is a slow, steady grind against my soul. It's few and far between that a woman isn't perky breasted and only lives to be a good plot device to the far more important male characters. And even then, you can bet she's at least sleeping with one of them.

ahaha I think.... I think that is a big problem in comics in general, whether they're pandering to a horny young fanbase or they're just out of touch execs who think that fanbase exists when it doesn't.

I personally enjoy how She-Hulk and Moonstone are portrayed, for example? I realize there aren't many female characters who don't fit the generic supermodel mold but She-Hulk at least has muscles (most of the time??) and is brilliant, and Moonstone is slave to no man, and is Zemo's equal in intelligence also. As for sleeping with, I have no problem with that? Maybe I don't understand what you meant.

:c It would be nice if they had more varying body types though, I would like that.

Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with marvel women sleeping with men (or with women!)

I think they overdid it with Karla c. Dark Reign, but that's because it was like her only thing, instead of one of many weapons in her Karla-arsenal

But I in general love Karla

Oh! Yes. Yes,the whole manipulation-by-sex with no fallbacks or plan B's is bad, I completely agree.

Luckily that was just a phase!! And really, all characters gett written poorly at some point or another, not just women.

I am intrigued by 40s Moonstone...

And now that LJ is done saying NO YOU CAN'T COMMENT.

Sex itself really isn't an issue! Everyone has it, comic characters should have it. The problem I have with it is that...how do I put it, if you are a powerful female character, you have to use sex as a means to having that power? This gets into the whole female empowerment debate and, I'll admit, and is all very much ymmv, but personally it annoys me to no end that 'powerful woman' means 'femme fatale' in most cases.

Well I guess I can't think of many Marvel women who actually use sex as a means of power? It's pretty rare. Like, Karla does, but she's not a good guy. I agree, that's not really empowerment... it's just a character trait.

But I mean, I love Black Widow. I think she's really great, and I think she as on the whole been written well, and it frustrates me that people do like, decide she's not a "strong female character" all the time b/c she is known for having sex? And if you read her stories actually she doesn't... actually have much sex at all?? It's just a widespread perception b/c she is typed as "sexy"

I see the same sort of thing with regard to She-Hulk often.

And that really frustrates me because I think in addition to getting the short end of the stick creator/editorial treatment wise, women get way harsher treatment from fans, because we hold them to way higher standards than we do male characters. Just generally, I think fandom takes much better to a guy who is obviously an asshole, or a guy who is sexually manipulative (see: Daken), or a guy who breaks down in emotion at a key moment than we are to women who do any of these things.

Well, the huge problem with She-Hulk is that

she's not in every book ever.

I think one of my main peeves so far has been when one artists tries to give a character a more realistic build, then another artists turns around and makes it completely ridiculous. It happens with male characters too, but I've noticed it more with female characters. Like when I went back and read the second New Mutants/New X-Men series from the beginning, and while there definitely could have been more diversity in body types, girls were still being drawn like teenagers in their chest/waist proportions. Then a couple issues later, some other artist would be drawing the girls who previously looked like B-cups with comically large breasts. But there have just been some crappy artists in general.

Also looking at the official heights and weights for characters is hilarious. Apparently Emma Frost is 5'10" and 144 pounds, and Jean Grey is 5'6" and 115 pounds. Because it's not like their boobs alone would add like 15-20 pounds to those weights, let alone their muscle tone.

sdfgndjksgsdfgnk OKAY THE OFFICIAL STATS ARE RIDICULOUS I grant you

:c also apparently this boy here is still 170lb. I imagine his armor just adds... 45 pounds...

It's more difficult for me to contextualize the stats for men just because they're body types are so different from my own, but I imagine that inaccuracies abound there too.

On that subject, I wish that people wouldn't forget that Wolverine is supposed to be 5'3".

his ~passionate scenes~ with Jean Grey would be so much more enjoyable if he was the one who had to look up to meet her eyes.
