EARLY MORNING NOT-MEME

This one is really simple:

WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER'S RELATIONSHIP TO THEIR FATHER?

You can also talk about mother/lusus/creator/whatever if your character doesn't have a father, but ANYWAY

Father's Day is on the 17th, let's talk about DADDY ISSUES.

[personal profile] septim 2012-06-09 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
MARTIN never knew Uriel Septim VII. He was spirited away as an infant for his own safety. By the time he was told he was a Septim, Uriel and his legitimate sons were assassinated by the Mythic Dawn. What makes it worse is that Uriel is a legend, one of the best, if not the best, Emperors Tamriel has ever had, so his legacy surrounded Martin.

Martin ambivalently resents the father who sent him away, loves and respects the Emperor who worked so hard to keep Tamriel peaceful and safe, and wishes with all his heart he could meet him. He's still sad about not ending up in Aetherius and instead in the City.

Also, his dad is Patrick Stewart.

Yuma:

BASICALLY HIS DAD IS
AMAZING.

The thing about Yuma, is he really looks up to how kind and brave and adventurous his parents are. On his own, he's not like that at all. Yuma's entire surface personality is his attempt to live up to his parents' ideals and expectations. My parents wouldn't run away, so neither will I! That sort of thing. Kattobing and I will never give up! are both things he got from his dad, as well as the Emperor's Key and his deck of cards. Any time any of these things are threatened, Yuma gets very, very hyper-defensive, because these are the things that keep him going. LITERALLY. There's even a scene where they show Yuma growing up without the lessons his father's given him, and he's just a fucking mess of chronic depression and anxiety, it's awful. But the reason Yuma tries so hard is because his parents believed in him, and they're such wonderful, friendly people, it's hard to not want to impress them.

His parents are adorable and secretly the best characters in the goddamn show.

For Ruka, her canon parents... are not a factor, at all, in her life. They don't even have NAMES or FACES. They're "always away on business", so Ruka and Rua grew up by... themselves... in a penthouse... so if we're going to talk about parents, we have to instead talk about the guys who adopted her in the city. Miles Edgeworth and Remus Lupin.

Her relationship with Remus was pretty stable; they were similar in a lot of personality traits, and his personal issues (such as lol werewolf) were never really a thing that concerned Ruka (what with "grew up with monsters" and "built in werewolf-proof defense mechanisms"). Because they got on so easily, though, and were so similar, Ruka's (unfortunately?) picked up some of his worse habits, such as "rather than deal with problems, let's just run the fuck away from them until they stop being an issue." He was also the kind of person who liked helping others but not so much in getting help himself, which only really... reinforced that as a thing Ruka does, too.

Her relationship with Edgeworth was definitely a great deal bumpier, what with him not being good with kids and her not at all being used to having parents for most of their relationship. What do you mean, I have to get permission to do things? He was a bit more difficult to understand, and to relate to, and it took a long, LONG ASS TIME for them to begin to consider one another "family." But he was someone she could always count on, and sometimes she was basically his only defender. Then he got a canon reset, but combined with his "remembers everything" power meant that he remembered everyone he knew in the City, but had completely lost all emotional connection with everyone, including Ruka. THAT SUCKED.

Both of them have long since ported out, and the absence of adult figures after depending on them for so long has really taken the earth out from under Ruka. They've both passed into the realm of "if they come back, they won't remember me or care about" territory (though Edgeworth was sort of there before he dropped anyway), which is probably worse than knowing your parents are dead and never coming back. But between her "not wanting to be a burden" issues and their respective often damaging attempts to not rely on other people, Ruka doesn't really try seeking meaningful help for what she's going through or how she's feeling. She does a great deal of deflecting when people ask, and even if she thinks that they know she's doing that, so long as she's not making things more difficult for other people, it's okay for her to suffer grief like this.

So this is Eddie's relationship with his father in a page.

Basically, although Eddie is 60% complicit in being such an insufferable bastard, the most inspirational 40% came from his abusive, anti-intellectual, stifling father. The inferiority complex that evolved into an overcompensating full-blown Narcissistic Personality Disorder was gifted from his father. Eddie's disdain for most human life, also from his father. Eddie has created his whole persona to be the opposite of his childhood and the umbrage that was his paternal influence, so to suggest that Eddie's dad had some impact on his life is quite the understatement.

CARRIE'S DAD is a stoner who cares. (or alternatively is batman, and that's awesome.)
KHISANTH'S DAD is a dragon somewhere and probably dead, who cares.
BLACK BOLT'S DAD he accidentally killed, sorry about that.

JAIME'S DAD is a MASS OF SPOILERS and Jaime is my only character to have any kind of significant connection to his dad. :| It helps that Tywin Lannister is the only actual character out of all these dads!
But without going into anything that's beyond where the show is— Tywin Lannister was hard on his kids, because his own father was too soft on him. His own father was a laughing stock who forgave far too easily, and Tywin vowed that neither he nor any of his children would be even remotely like that. He had two perfect blond twins, and life seemed to agree with his vow. And then he had a dwarf, who killed the love of his life on his way out, and things suddenly weren't going quite as well. So he kind of tucked the dwarf away and lavished all his cold fatherly disapproval on his two perfect children— until the king stole his heir to put into the Kingsguard, members of which aren't allowed to own lands or take wives. So his perfect, manly, promising heir Jaime was suddenly unavailable to him, and he was left with a girl and a dwarf.

Basically, Tywin Lannister has put up with a lot of affronts in his life, but he handled them all with cool dignity. And bloody vengeance, when possible. He raised his children very sternly, never smiled where they could see it, and did his best to impress upon them that Pride Was Everything. Spoilers: this eventually backfired.

BUCKY
— His dad died when he was 12, in what is usually said to be a parachuting accident. Bucky's dad was career military.
— It was obviously a defining moment in his childhood, because from that point on he was sort of On His Own. Also because the last thing he did before he died was tell Bucky he was in trouble.
— He was kind of an angry kid putting on a bright face for the next few years, but finding productive work and a sense of purpose in the army helped him make peace with his loss.
— Bucky loved his dad, though, and really looked up to him. It's hinted that they are/were very similar people. And yeah, Bucky's dad obviously loved him back.
— A lot of people assume Steve Rogers is a father figure to him! This has been the case in some interpretations but it's been heavily retconned out. And it was always more Steve seeing Bucky as a son more than Bucky seeing Steve as his father. Bucky… is quite attatched to his dead dad.

NATASHA
— Her biological father died with the rest of her family when she was very very young. She does not really remember him.
— But she was informally adopted by a solider named Ivan, who rescued her from the fire that killed her family! He helped raise her, and she grew up around him and his company of soldiers during some dark days in Russia's history. Then he became her chauffeur (?? comics)
— In the 1970s they were going to reveal he was actually her biodad, but this plot twist never happened.
— Ivan though, had sketchy people he worked for, and eventually he tried to escape them, taking Natasha with him! The KGB caught up with them, mortally wounded Ivan, and Natasha offered herself in service to the KGB if they'd save him with their magic wunderserum. They did, and that's how Natasha damned herself.
— Except the serum didn't work quite great and slowly turned Ivan insane. He began falling in love with Natasha and voicing his desire that they become lovers. Natasha, really understandably, saw him as her father, and so did not think of him Like That at all. He persisted, infected her with a nano-STD virus to slutshame her, put his brain inside the mind of a robot and tried to rape her! THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL PLOT, PAUL CORNELL, it was really something that needed to be inserted into her backstory.
— He's dead now and his brain is destroyed. THANKS, MARJORIE LIU.

LOKI
— Is full of daddy issues.
— His biodad Laufey was verbally and physically abusive, Loki plotted to have him killed by Odin and also to fake grief and rage and bravery so that Odin would be inspired to adopt him.
— But then Loki had massive issues as an outcast and was Jealous of Thor and perpetually feeling that he didn't have daddy's love and lashing out about it.
— Except actually his adopted family has shown him way more love than they've shown him. A lot of the barriers are ones Loki's really building himself.

JESSICA
— Her dad was killed in a car accident with the rest of her family when she was 16 or so.
— She was adopted late in life by strangers. (The explanation is that her adopted mother had also been orphaned in her teens and subsequently adopted.)
— Jess is fond of her adopted family and calls them mom and dad, but she also has some general adoption issues.
— But her focus relationship is with her mom, not her dad! We barely see her interact with him at all. Her mom is who she mentally monologues to and has Issues about.

ERIDAN's dad was a giant flying seahorse monster. for all intents and purposes they seemed to have a pretty typical troll-lusus relationship, although since eridan rode him around as a mount and could easily defend himself i'm assuming he ended up more or less treating his lusus like a pet instead of an actual authority figure or guardian. so he's basically had zero authority figures in his life until the city, contributing to being a massive brat. still, seahorse dad was pretty much the only other creature he could absolutely count on to stick with him, so he probably did love him a lot!

and then he died. baw.

NEMESIS' dad was a thinly veiled reference to Nikola Tesla and died in 1906 due to giant robot explosion, a day or so before nemesis was born. obv they never really had a relationship, including when nemesis went back in time to before... he was born... and kind of avoided both him and his mother as much as possible, because surprise! she died in childbirth. nevertheless, he seemed like a pretty alright guy and nemesis has the dude's name (nicola) as his middle name.

Nonexistent across the board!

Alastair lost his father at some point prior to his mother's death but nothing is ever mentioned of him. The only family relationships they make a point to show are with his mother and his brother. All we know his that he's dead and we have no idea what Alastair thinks of that. My headcanon is that his father was probably conscripted to fight in the civilian militia at the time and just got killed in the war.

Sanji? No idea. Oda is mum on whether his birth parents are even alive, but they're probably not. He considers himself raised by Zeff, his substitute-sorta-father-figure. That relationship is not normal. Zeff is gruff and spent a lot of time yelling and smacking his lessons into Sanji, and Sanji repaid him by sassing and fighting back. They refer to each other with derogatory terms and still argued with each other until the day Sanji left the Baratie. But they really do care for one another deep down, they just show their caring through kicking in the face.

Geddoe abandoned his homeland and his birth family 100 years ago when Harmonia invaded. Whether they were killed then or lived out a normal life, it doesn't matter, because he's outlived them. He never went back. The only headcanon I have is that he had an uninteresting, normal family relationship, it wasn't overly loving nor abusive. But if he ran from the invasion and never came back to find what happened, he wasn't all that close to his family. His father was nothing special, probably a farmer.

Canon doesn’t give us many details about Dick’s biological father except that he was understanding and loving and openly affectionate and basically everything Bruce isn’t and can never be as a parent. Dick only really seems to have positive memories of him, and watching him die along with mommy Grayson at the tender age of eight remains his strongest and most traumatic memory. As an adult he’s made his peace with it as much as anyone really could but he will still shed the occasional mantear in their honor.

Bruce is Dick’s adopted father and he is without a doubt the most important and valued person in Dick’s life. Bruce is his savior, his hero, his mentor, his friend, and taking him in and putting him in scaly green panties to fight the criminally insane at the age of nine was the best thing that ever could have happened to him okay. Bruce’s inability to provide real affection in ways Dick can process has led to a lot of angst between them over the years, which they’ve resolved mostly by… Dick coming to the realization each time that nothing will ever change and he can either take what he can get or leave. Sometimes that still isn’t enough, and he’ll get angry and scream and storm out the cave and swear he’s never coming back, but he always always always will in the end. There really is no sacrifice Dick wouldn’t make for him or because of him, for better or worse.

Peacock never really knew her biological father/parents, actually! She was orphaned at a young age by the Grand War, and actually had to assume a parental position herself for the younger children in the orphanage. She took this position extremely seriously, to the point that when slavers came to collect the kids, she stood up to them and bought enough time for them to run.

And then she was brutally and horrifically tortured (the only original things left of her are her brain and face, that's canon) and then Dr Avian and Lab 8 busted in and saved her! Dr Avian effectively became her father figure then, and she loves him. A lot. Insulting him in any way will set her off like nothing else, though she insults him a lot so idk Peacock. He's also one of two people still allowed to call her by her 'real' name; Patricia. TLDR SHE LOVES HIM A LOT AND SAYING ANYTHING BAD ABOUT HIM WILL GET HER SMASHING YOU INTO THE GROUND

Isaac had a fairly unremarkable kind of childhood, probably! He was more willing to get along with others and was a cheerful kid. He was mildly rebellious as a teenager, but nothing really big. He didn't really work on his music in the way his twin did; he just kind of noodled around casually, though he still was classically trained. Eventually. His parents were probably nice people, though he didn't keep in touch with them much after he got himself jailed for being a dumbass until he had kids. Headcanon is that he eventually reconciled with his parents and apologised to his brother for being a dick and they all get along pretty well!

Pretty much terrible.

Julian's father was a businessman, who he at first believed to be a self-made billionaire, but later discovered had made a deal with a supervillain called the Kingmaker to get rich quick. Initially Julian was mostly comfortable with his relationship with both his parents, though things were strained.

Basically his parents didn't like that he was a mutant. They didn't initially reject him for it, but they thought he was lucky that his mutation could be easily hidden, and they expected him to be subtle about his powers. He disagreed, to put it mildly. He thought that being a mutant made him special, and better than non-mutants, so he used his powers to show off and his parents became concerned that should his mutation be widely known their reputation would suffer for it. They sent him to the Xavier school in the hopes that he'd learn discretion.

Basically the opposite of this happened, and he ended up publicly outing himself as a mutant in the local press during his own run-in with the Kingmaker. After this, his father disinherited him. He went back to school still thinking that this wouldn't be permanent, but then Messiah Complex happened and the school was destroyed. In the aftermath, the X-Men originally decided not to rebuild, and the kids were all left to their own devices. Julian tried to go home, but discovered that his family had packed up and abandoned their mansion in Los Angeles and had moved on without telling him. He has no idea where they are now, and doesn't care to know since he realized they chose to uproot their whole lives rather than take him back in.

So okay, that was TL;DR! Basically, everything he thinks about his father is wrapped up in bitterness, resentment, and a shedload of abandonment issues that make him reluctant to trust adults in general and perceived authority figures in particular. Being let down by the X-Men a fair few times has also contributed to these issues, but at least they are still in his life. Father and family? Not so much.

Max has abandonment issues re: her dad. also EVERYTHING ABOUT HER FAMILY IS HEADCANON sob. He's not a bad guy! And when she was young they got along pretty well. He taught her chess and he encouraged her in her schoolwork. He was probably an electrician or something. I don't think the divorce was very amicable though, and he chose not to fight for custody of her. She's not even sure she would have wanted him to because she likes living with her mom, but that he never made the effort and the whole contact-with-him-being-super-rare thing upsets her. Anyways her dad is the cause of most of her abandonment issues and stubborn desire to be self-sufficient.

Monet was her dad's favorite growing up, and she is v fond of him. They don't seem to keep in touch too often - when asked what the last time she spoke to him was, she says "only a month ago, it was his birthday" - but hearing that he's been kidnapped to get at her is one of like... four times she cries on panel. It's actually a fairly healthy relationship and other than that one kidnapping it has remained normal and okay!

Quentin was originally on good terms with both his parents. There's evidence that he lived a happy life either way before he decided to change his attitude and ways. Basically on his birthday, Quentin got a phone call home from his parents who told Quentin that he was actually adopted.

From that moment on, Quentin became extremely bitter over this news (calling his parents "fake") and seemed to be shaken by the fact. Or atleast he became emotionally unstable and was acting irrationally. (I mean he started a school riot, but there were other factors involved in it.)

Since finding out he's adopted is a bit baffling and we aren't given much reason as to why they announced it out of the blue, other than to help motivate Quentin in the comics. My headcanon is that they've abandoned him because he's a mutant. At the time of the phone call, it's been revealed that he'd had some health abnormalities related to his mutations accelerating in their process. (He is an Omega mutant afterall.) This would help explain the rage and what not Quentin had. Plus, at the time, having a mutant child could risk ruining reputations and getting unwanted harassment.

Regardless if he's really adopted or not, it's clear that his parents had abandoned him. And even if they hadn't, their son did eventually go on to becoming an international teen terrorist.

The closest person who Quentin probably regarded as a father-type figure is Charles Xavier but... that too went out the window when he got fed up with Charle's lectures.

The kid really needs a father figure. :(

Oh dang, this meme was made for Tarvek.

Tarvek was genetically manipulated at his father's insistence to be the 'perfect heir' to an ancient throne and fullfill a legendary prophecy, thereby putting his father and his father's shady evil mistress in a position of power over the entire country. He was created solely to be a pawn and was used and manipulated from a very young age. His father was never a father to him so much as a warden, and then as he got older, things got progressively worse, culminating in his father almost killing his sister in an attempt to download his shady evil mistress into her head (and, it's implied, probably have sexual relations with her later).

He... was pretty okay with it when his sister killed his father, all told.

So, um, Gesicht is a robot and therefore does not have a father in the human sense.

However, he does have a father-figure in Professor Hoffman, who created the alloy zeronium which Gesicht is made of, and is also the main brains behind Gesicht's design, and is also in charge of the checkups he gets every couple months.

After which, Hoffman generally takes Gesicht to a cafe and quizzes him on how his life: "How's Helena? How's work? You haven't been working too hard lately, I know you do that a lot. You need to take better care of yourself."

And Hoffman's generally Gesicht's go-to guy for any "OMG WHAT ARE EMOTIONS D:" type problems. Gesicht also deliberately disobeyed orders once to save Hoffman's life.

So, uh, I guess their relationship is pretty good.

KATE originally didn't have daddy issues. She had dead mommy and twin issues and was very close to her dad! She wanted to be a soldier like Jake and her mother and definitely looked up to them as they were Good Soldiers and Parents.

Then it turned out her father had been keeping the secret that Beth might have been alive for twenty years and she burned that bridge right away. Kate was absolutely hurt, devastated and betrayed obviously by this revelation. She doesn't seem to have many people who she trusts in canon nor does she have many stable and healthy relationships. But finding out Jake never went to look for Beth and worst of all, never telling his own daughter who never made peace with it blew up their relationship and she went as far as locking him out of the their bunker and then the entire penthouse.

This is a huge, life changing moment for Kate. She's lost the one person who was always there for her, so now she feels she can't completely trust anyone. She's now very short and hostile with Jake if they need to talk to each other. Otherwise? She ignores him completely and avoids seeing him. She still loves him and would do anything to keep him safe, but she doesn't want to face him again because she feels he damned Beth and like... in a way, damned Kate into "killing" her.

GIL has no memories of his biological parents, so his father is out of the picture and probably not even relevant given Vincent has mommy issues.

But! He does have Oscar Vessalius, who is Oz's uncle. Oscar is kind of goofy and weird, but the kindness he showed Gil meant a lot to a kid who had no adult figures in his life. And since Gil's a servant, he felt Oscar was too kind for someone as lowly as him. It's canon he looks up to Oscar and even started smoking because Oscar smokes and it's cool! So he wants to be manly and cool like Oscar!

Basically Gil loves Oscar, even if he won't readily admit it. He's always been like family to him and it makes him all wibbly on the inside because FEELINGS. :'( Probably one of the few people he actually has a good, healthy relationship with.
