You can also talk about mother/lusus/creator/whatever if your character doesn't have a father, but ANYWAY

Father's Day is on the 17th, let's talk about DADDY ISSUES.

Kate's father is a wealthy media mogul and is something of a hands-off parent. That isn't to say that he doesn't love Kate and her sister, but he's very focused on growing and maintaining the publishing business that has been in their family for generations. Kate was always extremely close to her mother, and after her mother's death, her dad did try to fill the void, but that was just awkward for both of them. Derek shows love to his daughters by spoiling them and giving them everything they ever ask for, which isn't exactly what Kate needs from a parent. When she gets into trouble, he's there to look after her, but unless it's an emergency or a photo-op, he probably has something else he needs to be doing. Kate loves her dad though, even if they don't always see eye to eye on pretty much anything.
