I didn't actually watch this most recent episode of 5D's yet, and instead skimmed 2chan for out-of-context screen caps.

My world was shattered. Something very pivotal in my heart cracked and died.

I WAS PANICKED. CONFUSED. WONDERING WHERE THE SPIRIT THAT VIOLENCE WAS NOT THE ANSWER WENT. UNSURE WHAT THIS MEANT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SERIES.

hey I have a question I'm not sure you'll be able to answer

in the yugioh fandom, is everyone usually fans of all the series?

or do the fans divide by series?

There's a lot of division. There's the "DM (Original Series) Elitists," who have every sequel and spin-off on principle that it doesn't include Insert Yaoibait of Choice Here Yuugi / The Main Characters / Wasn't Written by Takahashi. They tend to hate GX, 5D's, ignore R and frequently the movies, and stare with loathing at the Abridged Series for ruining the fandom with "My Hair" jokes.

GXers tend to be pretty chill, since theirs is the series that gets the most hate. Some like 5D's, some don't, but they're the ones that go "We have dinosaurs punching satellites, we can't take anything seriously."

5D's fans are a mixed bag — some HATE GX, some love it, and some are secretly ashamed (or not) that they like 5D's more than DM, which is SACRILEGE or something.

Then there's TAS fans who are their own brand of crazy.





I'm pretty sure the fandom will implode with hatred once the crossover movie comes out.

I like DM (Duel Monsters, the first/second/original/the one that everyone knows series), haven't watched GX, and like 5D's. First two seasons of 5D's were for the most part stronger than the same amount of time in DM, but now I'm not sure which I like more.

R is a spin-off manga based in the first series, stuck between Battle City and Memory World. In it, Anzu gets kidnapped, Honda complains about people playing card games instead of punching people, and there are awesome paraplegic grandmothers doing shit. Also, vampires.

GX is... well. GX has Space Dolphins, Hermaphrodite Dragon Soulbonders, and a guy in a PVC unitard that clones himself and is made out of cards. 5D's crack is a little more of the "disco ball in the flower bed" variety, in that it usually wasn't as AND SUDDENLY DINOSAUR DNA as GX.

TAS got me into fandom in the first place, but I don't think the newer episodes are as funny.

as for TAS: I only got up to the 18th episode and stopped for whatever reason, so I guess I wasn't that into it.

thanks for answering my question, though! it's something I've always been curious about because YGO fans (and what I see around the comm from people in the cast knowing the other fandoms) seem to be divided a lot more than most ~general~ series, but then again each spin-off is very different, so.

THAT'S THE THING: YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO. But this fandom, I don't even know. Part of the joke is that for a series all about people uniting and gathering strength from friendship and bonds, we all fucking HATE each other for really stupid reasons.

Mmm, from what I know, for the DM cast, Kaiba-mun and Alastair-mun haven't watched 5D's, I had to bully Yuugi-mun into watching it, and Ryou-mun isn't really interested in the dystopian world-build. I think both Juudai-mun and Johan-mun are a little more familiar with 5D's than the others, but I wouldn't put money on it. Rua-mun, I'm pretty sure has watched all of GX, I think Kiryu-mun has watched some of GX, and I have no clue for Carley-mun.

Everyone has at least passing knowledge of Who Everyone Is and What All Happens in DM, but the fanbase doesn't carry over all that well. (Which is funny, since most generally follow the "normal people suddenly sucked into Ancient Thousand+ Year Mystery Involving Ancient X Cult in Ancient Y Society. Also, Dragons.)

DM generally hops from tournament to tournament, so it's a lot of "sixty episodes on an island! fifty episodes on the streets! a trillion episodes on a blimp! Suddenly, fifty episodes in Egypt!" GX, from what I've seen/heard, predominately takes place in and around a Card Game Academy. 5D's, though, promised us CLASS STRIFE and DYSTOPIA and MAIN CHARACTER IS IN PRISON BY EPISODE 6, LOLWAHT.

I think that's really interesting, and actually, to be honest it kind of makes me want to watch 5D's now! I mean, probably the sub since the dub was just hella weird, but, then again I'm sure that bro in a dress with a flower hat/girl with the deep voice is in both, but I think that it miiiight make it a little more bearable.

GX is Johan and Juudai,
5D's is Rua, Ruka, Kiryu, and Carley.

8) If you want to watch 5D's I can probably dig you up places to watch is streaming. I had a directory but then that specific publisher got banned or something.

Olesia, I love the way you explain things. :D

But yes. Kaiba-mun and I have not watched anything past DM. She has some of the R manga but I think gave up/forgot about that. I have come to be less RAAARRRGH about the spinoffs since RPing with people who make the characters enjoyable, but I don't know if I can bring myself to watch them.

I thought R was a spin-off about Pegasus' twin nephews set in an AU where he did not in fact die of cardgames.

R is actually about people called Card Professors, and children that Pegasus adopted in mass. The focal point is twins, Yakou and Gekkou, where Yakou was tricked by Dark Bakura (who did some crazy voodoo magic) and said it was Yuugi's fault Pegasus died.

SO fast forward after Battle City, Yuugi is chilling in his class and HOLY SHIT revenge scheme. Yakou kidnaps Anzu and threatens to use her body as a vessel for Pegasus spirit. PEGASUS IS PRETTY DEAD BECAUSE THIS ALL FAILS.

Pretty much this, except I've found most of the DM "purists" eat TAS up just the same, actually, even though it's parody.

And lol, I'm one of those people that likes the spinoffs over the original, strangely. As shown by my choice in characters.

I've seen some go gaga for it, and some just want it to die in a fire, so we might just be seeing different sectors of it.

Haha, I still haven't watched GX, but if you ignore everything after the Signers arrive in Satellite in 5D's, its pacing and overall story-telling is 20x that of DM for the same arc. God I miss the first season ;___;
