C&C 2020 Someone call for a dystopian future au? Sometime around 2013 (THIS IS NEW, GUYS, WE'RE JUST SLIDING THE SHIT HITTING THE FAN FORWARD A FEW YEARS OKAY), the government in the City decided that they'd had enough of these superhero antics. There was a nationwide crackdown on metas, requiring registration upon penalty of incarceration. The network was shut down, and many residents were scattered to the winds. There are a few that stayed in touch, however. That's where you come in. For some of you, this might be from before your time. Not to fear! Since it's a highly flexible splinter universe, there's pretty much no such thing as canon. Retcons abound, either as allowances for contradictory canon information (except for the premise, of course), or even just if the player wants to change something around! So, use this post as a free-for all. New characters get new projected histories, dropped characters can be said to have come back, and old characters can be reexamined or given more story. On Saturday, an open post will be put up in capeandcowl2020 proper, so use this time to work out information and pimp this out to players who're eligible but may not see this (you can also ahead and start your own posts in that comm)! /COPYPASTAS FROM LAST TIME

With everything that happened with the SHRA back home, and with all the things Carol did because of it, she can't bring herself to even try to work with this one. It kills her a little inside to watch everything happen, but she pushes through it and does what she can to oppose it.

She's not very overt about it, her joining up with the resistance movement and fighting against the government. Mostly because she slips back into old habits and starts playing the spy game again. Her powers, while useful in big fights and break-outs, aren't really good when one wants to stay on the down-low. Neither is her costume. So long gone are the days of the bathing suit and opera gloves, with showy bursts of energy and flying everywhere. Now, she uses her old codename Warbird and wears something much more practical, though she still can't let go of that red sash. And that is, of course, when she's even wearing a uniform.

Her specialty is in getting information. Whether it's by breaking into a place and stealing it, or undercover work, or even getting in touch with people working within the infrastructure to funnel information out, she's your girl when you need to get info from one place to another. Or if there's a need for some super strength, or even some more militaristic strategy, she's there. She's flexible and will go wherever the resistance and/or her information points her. While she's got leadership and military experience, it was never on any level like this, so she's relatively okay with taking orders.

Of course, there's been hiccups along the way, and Carol's starting to wonder just what, exactly, this is accomplishing since it's taking so damn long for nothing to change. But she mostly keeps those thoughts to herself and goes where she's needed. Once a soldier, always a soldier. At least in some ways.

When the crackdown and shit began to hit the fan, Kate stood to fight. The years spent here before the crackdown has made her even more bitter, every passing day a reminder she's still a prisoner in this place. So when the government got too close to cracking down on her and potentially jeopardizing the lives of the people she loved around her, she did what she is unfortunately really good: she cut herself off completely. She hasn't seen Nill in who knows how long, doesn't communicate often with anyone she had originally allied herself with, and definitely fucked things up with Renee once again. Anyway, she disappeared for some time; you'd think she was ported out or died.

She lies about her name (insisting it's Beth Hamilton) to keep others out of her life or when she suspects anyone is getting too close. She's more ruthless in her fighting now, but doesn't take any pride in the hurting and maiming she's done to others who have gone after her. She sees it as an inevitable part of war.

But she still soldiers on, fighting against the government she once held faith in. She helps the resistance, though is more prone to her own private operations.

MATT MURDOCK

Matt was ready to stand and fight. He'd been against any sort of registration or crackdown before, and he sure as hell was not going to go without a fight. And he did fight. He fought hard, and he wound up with a traumatic brain injury following a scuffle with police. He was hospitalized, forced to register in his incapacitated state before being released into society again.

The only problem was his radar was completely gone and his short term memory was all but destroyed.

Terezi somehow found him first, and decided that she would put her suffering man lusus out of his misery. Fortunately May intervened at the last second, preventing Matt's gruesome murder at the hands of his adoptive daughter.

Unable to practice law anymore, Matt was able to find work as a line chef while living with May and trying to keep Terezi from getting into too much trouble. But it's difficult when you can't really remember anything and you have no powers.

Dick Grayson

He leapt to the new fight without a backward glance, working to locate missing imports, acquisitioning new identities for people in need, and building an ever expanding network of freedom fighters to depend on. Resources were scarce, new costumes rarer, moves much more frequent, but at the root of everything there was Damian to look after and a legacy to uphold. A cause to fight for.

Then Damian left – left too soon and left angry - and in his absence Batman Inc was reborn, both as a tribute to the broken partnership and an attempt to consolidate resources. Since then he’s expanded, bringing new blood into the fold and stockpiling safehouses for imPorts and his growing army of Batmen alike. He has to struggle now to remember that half-forgotten past; to remember Gotham on a cool night, the sound of Alfred’s voice, his mother’s hand in his hair when he was small and afraid. The old set of rules doesn't work anymore, but he's not quite ready to give it up just yet.

After the severe crackdown, and increase in anti-import population, there was just simply no way Mitchell Hundred could hold onto a seat in government. Ousted from his position, the only thing that actually saved him in the long run was his ability to shut off machines in his wake. It left a trail until he got smart, and started shutting them off with a timed turn-on period. Mitchell had to go underground, but he wasn't a fighter, he hadn't been in a long time, and for the former politician, the resistance wasn't going to do what he thought the import community needed. So Mitchell Hundred disappeared. Sherlock Holmes helped him, got him the connections to black market plastic surgery, and he managed to change his face, plumper and easier to hide the ugly scars that would instantly give him away. He started writing, policy books, mostly, outrageous and biting, acidic towards the new policies, Mitchell managed to get a name for himself under Adrian Maskin.

And he was doing well, for a while. He even managed to bump points for import support. But then, then he was discovered by Katurian K. Katurian, who despite the plastic surgery could pick up Mitchell instantly. That was where the trouble began. Mitchell didn't know how far he went, and then it all came down. Katurian sent after Mitchell the worst assassin, Edward Nygma, and Mitchell barely escaped with his life, since Edward knew way too much about his powers from their time in City Hall.

After this, "Maskin" pulled all publicity requests, all requests for interviews, citing to his publisher that he had a new book in the works. He got plastic surgery again, this time something more similar to his old face, but just enough in difference that he wouldn't be recognized, technology had been improved, after all, he could cover his scars without bulky fake skin now, and he did, he just had to be careful not to use his powers.

And he went to his private writers cabin, selling the small mansion Maskin had lived in, living out in the "fucking woods" as he called it.

And this is where he's at now, in hiding!

After things started to get bad, Monster started spending more and more time in the darkness, getting separated from his friends and lost in the dark. He spent years and years in the dark, in the alleys and sewers in the City, before getting caught and thrown in a cell. He stayed there, quiet, in a pitch-dark cell for a while, up until Vivi came and busted him out, at which point he is in the sewers again!

But the sewers are a lot better than his cell, and he has something he didn't have before: the desire to find his friends again.

Jack Bauer

Throughout his controversial and bloody career, through all the terrible things he's done, there's always been some lines Jack Bauer has never been willing to cross. One of the biggest is that he will never, ever kill an American cop, soldier, or agent who is executing their lawful duties, even if those duties involve trying to kill or arrest Jack.

So 2020 is agony for him! His own country is involved in something he absolutely can not in good conscience stand for, but with a skill set like his it's hard for him to participate in any resistance because eventually he's going to end up killing somebody with a badge or uniform. The moment he does that, he's taken up arms against the US government just like the people he's fought against his whole career, and that's a step he has problems with.

Fortunately he has no real powers and a lot of experience at being a fugitive, so he's just been moving around off the grid for a while, wrestling with his options and with his conscience while shifting between aliases when necessary.
He's considering trying to help the resistance without killing anybody, or maybe striking out on his own to form a private operations team that would take down bad guys around the world while sidestepping the situation back home. One thing's for sure, he can't keep running forever. With things as bad as they are, he knows he has to make a decision soon...

Kanaya runs an orphanage connected to an abandoned cathedral. Jade lives there with her maybe? (Karkat may visit sometimes, maybe also Terezi), and it's become something of a nexus for those moving goods or people in and out of the City, especially other imPorts. Team Space just does that. If there's one thing she can say for this whole move, it keeps her fed. Anyone the government has ever sent after her has never returned, of course, and no one's ever found the bodies.

Nothing will keep her from her children, and she'll protect them at any cost.

She keeps touch with others as she can, but the years change some relationships. Some worries were never really worth it, others worth more than she expected, but that doesn't make any of them easier to let go of.

james jesse / trickster

When shit began hitting the fan, James ran off and hid by (rather reluctantly) joining a circus. There he picked up his old family aerialist act and to make sure he wouldn't accidentally slip up and reveal his powers, he even started wearing a power inhibitor collar he made himself which kind of made heights scary again. However, the circus is more a front than anything. He uses the circus as a means of getting around and gathering as much information as he can and also to help the resistance whenever/wherever he can. He's particularly good at breaking in and breaking out of places, stealing, inventing and blowing stuff up/play havoc. He's still a con-artist too, using the money from his cons to fund the resistance and keep the circus going, but he does keep most of the money to himself for his inventions.

The only time he wears his colors (in the form of a new costume) now is when he's out doing things for the resistance, otherwise he keeps on the down low as ol' Jesse, circus aerialist.


TLDR; HE DOES WHATEVER HE CAN TO BE A HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS FOR THE GOVERNMENT while also trying to stay under the radar.


so yes, if you need someone for a stealth or a rescue mission or just to make a distraction, he's your guy!

I AM STILL NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH APRIL. Artist in Katurian's creative harem if he'll have her? I'm really open to any ideas, since while she's against the grim dark enslavement thing, she's also very easily able to just try and shut it out and pretend it isn't happening.

After the crackdown happened, Jason freaked out and went underground, using Talia's left over connections. He established several aliases (of both the civilian and superheroic variety), making Jason Todd and the Red Hood little more than an annoying nostalgia fit with bad 80s music. He traveled from city to city, sometimes as a mercenary, sometimes as a vigilante. Denver knew him as Batman, DC as Nightwing, Baltimore as Hush, and Detroit as Redwing, but he kept on the move. Staying only long enough to crash a major crime ring and then dip.

Growing a little bored of the nomadic lifestyle, however, he returned to the City and to the Red Hood identity in 2020. Only days after arriving, he met up with Jessica Wakefield again, and discovered he had a kid, Jaime, he'd never known about. Sick over basically being a deadbeat dad, he resolved to do whatever was necessary to provide for them. Which... Basically entailed following Jessica, Laura, and the baby around on Laura's misadventures while trying not get into too much trouble himself.

Jaime is totally going to be Scarlet when she turns 7. Fight me.

Also he totally wears the condom costume. Again, fight me.

Gamzee is unregistered. He lives/hides with his moirail but at this point in time has started to disappear quite a bit since he's strangely more relaxed about Karkat not being prone to sudden death.

He also steals a lot of Faygo and food kind of like how he does right now.

Besides the change in his age and size not too much else has changed with Gamzee except that he is noticeably calmer to talk to though he doesn't trust strangers that much and will be likely to club somebody if they seem like too much a threat. Also, he still doesn't sleep well.

Magneto has been quiet, but whispers of his presence have spread through the underground imPort community. This is about to change. He and Charles have been laying low since they escaped from prison, but Erik prefers a more direct approach rather than working from the shadows.

For the past months, they have been observing the scattered imPort community-- some directly, others discretely through the used of a newly built Cerebro. They have taken note of the resistance effort, and found that it has great potential, but lacks cohesion. That is what they seek to change. The resistance must be united if they should hope to make a true change in the world. They are now making an active effort to contact other resistance members who they feel can be trusted.

tl;dr Erik and Charles were very outspoken against the crackdown since the beginning and were some of the first ones imprisoned. Charles went grimdark after years subjected to experiments and sensory deprivation. They broke out of prison a year ago and have been chilling in Vermont while Charles recovered.]

If you hand Max a blueprint, even a flawed one, she can built it and she can build it functioning. She realized this application of her powers belatedly when crackdowns started happening and she came under surveillance, and within a day she was gone. She cut ties ruthlessly. Ghost was already gone. She told Midii why she had to leave though not where and made it clear she couldn't contact her. She left papers signing over everything she owned to her and Terry, and sent Dick a letter requesting that he keep an eye on Midii for her. She didn't tell Terry a thing, all too aware he'd try to stop her, instead leaving him to find out from Midii.

She stayed on the run for months, only steps ahead of the government, and eventually those steps narrowed and they caught up. She killed one of them and maimed another during her escape, and a few weeks later Dick received a note and key to a subway locker that contained her Batwoman suit. The note read only "I don't deserve this anymore."

After a while she returned to the City, reaching Sherlock and joining up with the resistance as a courier / intel gatherer / occasional terrorist. Her morals are no longer up to bat standards and she harbors a huge amount of guilt over that though she'd say she was fine with doing what had to be done. The City is her base of operations, but she travels a great deal.

She goes by the codename Nyx when she needs one, and the knowledge that she used to be Batwoman is limited to Sherlock and those who already know / will know soon.

GHOST has completely lost the plot of his own personal narrative, and while he occasionally attacks and destroys facilities that oppose imPorts, most of the time he is a broken husk burned out by the exhaustion of his own strongly held ideals. Surrendering fully to the paranoid schizophrenia and isolated from grounding factors like his team, his friends, and the people he cares for most, Ghost has become practically incoherent, easily prone to violence, and disconnected from the world around him. Most of the time he can't tell whether the people he once cared for are really there or not, and often forgets vital facts.

He no longer trusts anyone, and although he interfaces with Max, Eddie, Sherlock, and Tony Stark on occasion, he's more isolated than he ever was before.

SCARECROW was captured early on and sent to an experimental facility, where his ring was confiscated and he was repeatedly "interrogated" with "enhanced techniques" for several months. The combination of being denied feeling fear and being beaten savagely made the normally stubborn man particularly pliant, at least externally. He struggled to manifest whatever they demanded of him, for a while, wheedling and manipulating his way out of the worst of it before having a complete epiphany regarding the government and their treatment of imPorts. He offered his own not insignificant skills as a torturer and completely sold out, man.

PIPER was similarly detained, though he caved far quicker, and agreed to work for the government in stubborn cases by eroding the wills of detainees, something he tried and failed to convince himself was a mercy to them, and he lives every single day of his life in utter self loathing and helplessness. He is in need of rescuing.

Okay, going to keep this as to-the-point as possible. By 2020, Midii here:

-Had been "abandoned" by Max when she left the city, leaving a note explaining why. She was sad for a long time after, but doesn't hold a grudge over this.
-Dick looked in on her for a while after the fact, and the two developed a friendly bond
-When she was 16, started getting into codes and translation "jobs"
-Became a nomad to avoid detection by the government once they started going after her for her memory. honed her camouflage skills (wigs, makeup, etc) to continue operating under the radar.
-Comes back to the city sometimes to help old allies and visit friends, but never stays long. Restless. Suffers from eternal wanderlust.
-Operates under the codename "caméléon"

About a year after the crackdown, Molly left the City for London. Because she had quickly come forward and registered, she was allowed to find work in a London hospital in the morgue. After a few, peaceful years of hard work, she was promoted to chief of staff. She never married, simply settled down on her own. She lost contact with Sherlock, and eventually got over her crush on him. She'd still help him if he came a-knocking, of course, but there would be a limit now. She's probably also lost contact with John? I didn't think this through very much sob. SUGGEST TO ME.
