Sometimes the smallest of changes can have a catastrophic consequence to an individual's perception, or thought, or philosophy. Sometimes it takes just a glimpse. For Edward Nygma, it took the world descending into dystopia.
You've seen it before: Earth-3, the Antimatter Universe. When society finds itself stifled by oppression, one man always swims against the mainstream. The catalyst is what varies -- or rather, it's who varies. No longer satisfied with his manipulation games and shadow-string pulling, Eddie has since dedicated his talents to the resistance. He's an intelligence operative, an encoder and a decoder, a man who deals information for the sake of free speech. He's all about connections and knowledge. His motivation isn't much of a riddle, he doesn't do it for the greater good, nor for some pandering image of mankind.
He does it for a better world for his family. He does it for Felicia Hardy.
But heroism has its cost.
The time is 2019.
He had no regrets, not at first. Even after his captured by lawman Norman Osborn. Even after the first few months with a totalitarian Katurian, sunk in the shadows of torment and solitude and punishment, he had no regrets. And after the brainwashing, after the re-education and painful confirmation, Eddie didn’t need to ever consider regrets again. It was an unlearning he was taught from Katurian himself, after months upon months of darkness. It was Katurian he owed, that cruel monster he was now so deeply devoted to.
The time is late autumn, 2020. Eddie has been released into the world again, after a year and some months. He doesn’t know he has a son, he doesn’t know where Felicia is – but he knows his purpose.
It’s the one Katurian gave him. And Eddie knows how to love now.

Karkat is extraordinarily angry, has probably given up (but not really), grew taller (but not much), hangs around trying to piss off Sollux, got the shit kicked out of him a few years back and wears the sign on his face, registered against his will, holds a shitty job, grew a patch and started dying his hair black.

HERE'S LUST'S ORIGINAL EMO BACKSTORY but since that was two years ago things have changed significantly! Duh. She's still somewhere in Europe, and still feeling rather discontented, but now she has Vriska there with her to use as a psychic murdermonkey and carve out a place in the underworld or whatever it is she's doing! SUCH A LUCKY MOM. Except that then Vriska is recaptured by CERTAIN ELEMENTS, and she returns to the City to track her down! Unfortunately for nobody but her, she has yet to do so.
Also she cuts her hair regularly now and every five seconds a wind blows in the wrong direction or she nicks the edges and it all grows back.

Raphael has found himself in the familiar -- hated, hiding and in danger. The idyllic situation found among the imPorts, able to walk around with sun on his skin and go to the beach and maybe, you know, even date or kiss a girl...
....yeah, that's all gone. It's made him bitter. Now? He's picked up some of Julian's revolutionary fever and is fighting for 'his' people, ninja style. He doesn't bother with a 'no kill' rule -- they decided he was dangerous, so he'd show them just how dangerous he could be.
He's missing an eye now; twenty-five, in his prime, Raphael's personal war against the registration of imPorts is on, and he's not looking back. Not at all.

This is Justine Florbelle. Justine was imPorted sometime around 2011 or 2012, and adapted beautifully. Bureau? She chirped, tucking her hands behind her back. Why, of course she'll register! She's nothing special, but it would only be right.
But while she's here, couldn't she work for them? She's from another time period, after all, and she has so much to learn. And this is an enterprise of science, is it not? There's just so much information she could glean.
It wasn't long before she worked her way into the labs, and up the rungs within them.
It's a widely accepted fact within the Bureau prison that if you hear a high pitched giggle or a cooing insult with a French accent, to try not to attract attention. If she comes to your cell, there's no telling what might be in store for you. Because Justine is creative. And she does not see the inmates as anything other than test subjects.
(As a point of interest, Daniel as a torture device was her idea, and she's simply delighted at how well that's panned out.)

Hank was one of registration's most public opponents, having been through much of the same at home, and ever the diplomat. But the talks steered out of his favor, and he went into hiding after becoming a political target, one of those loud voices they could make a demonstration out of silencing.
He has found a way to keep the Institute running, somewhere in Montana. It isn't as much of a school so much as a refuge anymore, though he does try to run classes as he finds the necessity. He never leaves the premises, out of fear of being found, but he has agents and sympathizers all around getting him messages from the outside world, and he constantly works to find safe paths to lead other imPorts on the run into his doors where they'll be safe.
He's become something of a farmer like his father, but out of trying to maintain a sustainable and independent existence for himself and those in his care. His knowledge of science is now directed to agricultural engineering, brainstorming ways to create better and healthier crops. It's a shame he'll never be able to share his findings with the rest of the world.
He's barely 40 and the grey is really starting to creep into that blue fur.

damian wayne | BATMAN
For a while, it seemed as though this new world was the best thing that had ever happened to Damian. He had a chance at a normal childhood, in a world that understood his vigilante heritage. He had members of his family to support him, and budding friendships. Of course, that was all before. When things went bad, Damian got angry. When he was about sixteen, the idea of Batman and Robin wasn’t enough to tie him to the city anymore, and he left. He began utilizing the other side of his heritage, forming an international ring of rebels and protectors. His main goal was to save as many children as possible, but eventually he fell into heavy vigilantism overseas. At nineteen, he returned to the city, and reconciled with Dick; finally, he took up the mantel of Batman. Now, not even old enough to legally drink, he controls an underground empire. He is the Bat, looking out for the world. He returns to the city every few months, sees a few people—specifically, he’s there for Nill, who he will never stop looking after and never stop caring for. His life is a lonely one dotted with the presence of family and friends he just can’t seem to shake, even in his dark quest for justice.
donna troy | WONDER WOMAN
Donna doesn’t have time to dwell on her life too much; it moves to fast. Soon after things went bad, she decided it was her responsibility to become a beacon of hope for this world. That was when she once again became Wonder Woman. Embracing some of the harsher parts of her Amazonian heritage, she is also a member of the resistance, working primarily with Roy Harper and Dick Grayson. She and Roy travel the length of the United States in their quest, though Donna has the side motivation of trying to keep Roy from being too harsh in his methods. The city is still her base, and it is here she tries to help the world’s children—though in a roundabout way, because now she trains young women in the ways of the Amazons, knowing that they need to be able to defend themselves in this harsh environment. Her life is one of travel, justice, and loss—she doesn’t let herself think of the personal life she has always wanted, because that isn’t what the world needs from her. What it needs is a Wonder Woman who is ruthless, a savior.

Let's see, not much has changed for this guy. He went through a period where he tried to mitigate between the government and the imports, and even tried to help them with their registration attempts, but things just...didn't work out. Tony was eventually betrayed by the government because he's a jerkface who had too many contingencies. They put one of those nifty Extremis inhibitor ankle bracelets on him, and put him under house arrest. He's essentially stuck being their figurehead without any of the advantages. He's stuck in a remote, upstate New York villa, where he tries to funnel any intel he can get out to the people that can help take care of the government, but he can't actually get out.
By 2014 Dick Grayson all but ceased to exist in the city, vanishing without a whisper underground to avoid registration and escaping much of the earliest hardship afflicting others. He leapt to the new fight without a backward glance, working to locate missing imports, finding them new identities and smuggling them out of the city through an ever expanding network of freedom fighters. Resources were scarce, new costumes rarer, moves much more frequent, but at the root of everything there was Damian to look after and a legacy to uphold. A cause to fight for.
Then Damian left – left too soon and left angry - and like history repeating itself the wake of the fallout was too much. One bad night out was all it took, and Dick found himself in custody at an undisclosed facility far from the city; drugged, confined, and microchipped. While poking and prodding a little further his captors also happened to discovered the final vestiges of the Major’s brainwashing technology; those few pieces he’d long since asked Zee to leave behind after the incident back in 2010. His chip contained a crude imitation of a signal just strong enough to reactivate some of his earlier programming, and under its control Dick spent the next year working as a silent, faceless government agent; hunting down and sometimes destroying imports deemed too dangerous to be left alive.
From the start the new tech included contradictions designed to insure his loyalty, and when its hold on him began to break down his benefactors were a step too slow. Confused, desperate, and finally at a breaking point he turned on them, burning his prison to the ground and leaving behind only brutalized causalities. He was found hours later in the wreckage by none other than Barbara, who reverse-engineering the technology holding him prisoner and freed him at last from its influence.
Since then his costume has been missing an emblem – the tarnished remnants of his old mantle long since passed on to Damian. He calls himself The Target, patrolling the streets of the city alongside new partner Thrillkiller, and a newly assembled team of highly skilled vigilantes. He has to struggle now to remember that half-forgotten past; to remember Gotham on a cool night, the sound of Alfred’s voice, his mother’s hand in his hair when he was small and afraid.
While he and Barbara continue to endure long separations, he’s surrounded once more with people he can call friends, and orphaned children who need guidance. He’s careful now about who he lets close enough to see the face behind the mask, but as long as there are innocents left to save he won't be giving up the fight.

Aradia has registered and is playing nice with the government, at least for now, and the fact that her powers mean she can just blink out and back into existence makes it awfully hard for them to actually find her doing something illegal. That doesn't keep them from giving her a hard time, however. She's put herself into college on her stock-cheating earnings and is currently in the junior year, working on an archaeology degree from City University, but looking totally normal and human hasn't stopped dirty looks or dramu in the slightest. She plays the part of the timid student because she has to, and she's pretty much okay with it!
Secretly, she's been testing her limits by going back as far as she can to various historical spots and basically looting shit! Because of this, she has a shitty grail pile and an even shittier mummified cat pile in her dorm room, where anyone is free to sit and talk about her feelings. It isn't so she can travel back and warn people, though, because what could they actually do? Aradia doesn't want to get out of this through weird time shit. She's spent enough time doomed, and she doesn't want to come back only to suffer the aftereffects of escaping from a doomed timeline, but if that were all there was standing in her way she would bite the bullet; she has to die a thousand deaths before any quest, including this one, is completely. What keeps her from interfering, other than making sure Karkat has some peroxide after his face gets cut, Sollux knows what alley some goons are going to come from, or her friends have the money they need to bribe some official, is optimism and certainty.
This time, Imports are going to save themselves the linear way. And Aradia, with or without reason, is absolutely sure of that.

JAIME REYES
The Scarab suit vanished from service barely a year after shit hit the fan for good, but you'll have a hard time getting the specifics out of him as to why. He runs the Network - - what remains of it, anyway. Scarab and Jaime keep open, secure channels for those shuttling refugees and goods, pointing people in the right direction to safehouses, keeping them clear and up-to-date on the latest anti-imPort news. Word of mouth gets you access, and no matter where you are, a fresh, updated access code will find its way to you when the passwords change monthly.
Married, father of two (soon to be three), Jaime's spent so much time at those underground screens that his eyes are kind of going, hence the glasses. But it's not all humdrum glum; he's happy to help. He can maintain a bit of normalcy through the routine he has. He's going to keep his kids safe, but he's not letting those of his past go. You'll get those annoying e-cards if you fail to visit enough.
BLUE
The anti-psychic/psionic technology that arose after 2015 is something you can thank Blue for, but you can be sure it wasn't his desire. Back in thick-walled isolation chambers, Blue found himself subject to worse than he'd been born in. He escapes, of course, though he can't tell you why. He may not be able to place your face at first - - or at all. His mind is a hazy labyrinth with too many dead ends and black pits to navigate; all of his precious memories slip out of mind like water through fingers.
Paranoia keeps him wandering, oftentimes teleporting in a blind panic with that sense of danger looming over his shoulder. Familiar faces anchor him, give him pause and purpose. Temporarily. He's not sure what he's doing anymore, but if he's left unscathed, he's sure to have a long Mu life to sort it out.
ZELGADIS GREYWORDS
Cures come and go, but he's stopped scouring as hard. The times make it almost necessary that he keep his impervious hide (not so impervious to those damn laser weapons, but). He is a globetrotter now, hand in hand with his most important person, knocking out anti-imPort projects before they can get off the ground, seeking out solitude in the wild along the way.
GISELLE
She'll be rescued, I'm sure, the next time her singing gets her into trouble. She'll probably be reminded to keep her talks with the animals down to the barest minimum as well. Whoever finally has hold of her will have an obedient, soft-spoken friend to keep their lodging clean and food baked to perfection.
SLO-BO
He gets ported back in well into the shifting atmosphere, confiscated on the spot, and shipped off. He enjoys an extended stay under Stein's knife before enough is finally enough, and the right circumstances and the right lack of interference give him chance to bust out and make a wild mess of things. Compromise stops him where brute force fails. He's free, under certain terms and conditions.
He's also for sale to the highest bidder, not unlike the Main Main what spawned him. Being the "lesser DNA" keeps him from getting any taller or beefier, but he's still a heavy-hitter and nigh unkillable.
He has this pesky conscience problem, though. It makes for some really convoluted job outcomes.

Nothing changes for Sally. Having moved out the MAC and into a nicer part of town, she avoids registration and just becomes one with the non-meta populace. She misses home, she misses her kid, she misses her friends, and her hair's starting to fade to a lighter shade of orange.
She finally cracks down and swallows her pride to work as a waitress in a cheesy 50s style diner.
She still frequents the same bars she used to when she was younger. And when she isn't at the diner or the bars, she's at home, alone, with a glass of alcohol in hand, waiting for a knock at her apartment door or phonecalls from old friends.

Sometimes, it turns out living as a sort of sophisticated robot in the Stupid Ages isn't so great after all- Mainly because when you break, there's no one around who can fix you.
That's why Bender is slowly shutting down in the future- He's not exactly immobile but there's certainly a lot less mobility and energy than there was before. He spends pratically all of his day mooching off everyone he likes in order to scrape together enough booze to keep operational, whilst also spending a large amount of time watching soap operas.
tl;dr- Bender is really old, you guys, and who knows how much longer he'll last. So you better treasure him whilst you still got him! >:(

We'll leave you to imagine what sort of experiments they did on the man who can't die. Suffice to say, they left him a great deal less sane than he was in the first place. In any case, by about 2017 they began to get lax with the guards placed around him, and Jack managed to seduce one of the people in charge of him, get certain information from her, and break out. Once free, Jack discovered that while he was imprisoned, the Doctor had disappeared. One less tie to sanity! Obviously that's what he needed.
With the Doctor gone, Jack gradually slides back into his old ways, traveling around smuggling and conning people when he feels the need for it. Through an arrangement with Ted Kord, he's gotten a ship, and drops by to visit old friends and take revenge on newer enemies when he can. Before registration Tara finished up college, got her degree(s), and looked forward to a promising career in counselling. When registration starts things get very complicated. Tara is torn on what to do at first but, ultimately decided to play along. Given her policy on only using magic when absolutely necessary (and keeping it small even then), no one really knew she had much power was in her. She came off as a harmless Wiccan who could move some furniture if push came to shove. Tara milked it for all it was worth and as a result has gotten to lead a fairly standard life.
As we all know allies of the Slayer don't just sit still and let evil happen. Tara helps imports in secret and basically rights wrongs using the Glinda persona given to her when she arrived in the City. With the use of glamours and costumes she's managed to keep a balance between the two lives and be a force for good.

Being an elf in a dystopian future is hard. It's hard and no one understands.
But it's also familiar, being looked down upon. It's what Zevran was used to. With it came a creeping sense that his interlude of redemption was over--not just his time in the City with all the new friends he'd made there, but his time doing the right thing. He was never meant to be more than a killer at the beck and call of people far more powerful than he was.
He resisted at first, of course; he'd grown to like having the chance to develop a sense of self-worth. But the government knew his past--he'd let it slip to one too many people before the crackdown--and they knew where to apply pressure. It was harder to resist as more and more of his friends fled, and he lost contact. Then he slipped up, aided the wrong fledgling resistance group. He found himself in government custody, and through most of 2015, Zevran was shuttled from facility to facility, here tortured, there trained, until it was impressed onto his mind that he was at their mercy.
Zevran waited for rescue, trusting in his new friends; back in his world, the Warden had taught him that sometimes people could be kind to him. But they had their own troubles. No rescue came. He gave up.
That time when he thought he could be more than an assassin? It's over now. He kills who the powers that be tell him to, and when he's not busy doing that, they keep him on a lavish but short leash. His attempts to seduce figures of power are met with amused indulgence, for the most part, and his more successful conquests, they turn a blind eye to. He dines out and sleeps in at the finest restaurants and hotels, but only if they're approved for his presence. He knows he's not in charge of his own destiny anymore--if he ever was.
Sometimes, though...sometimes he slips. He lets a mark go when he could have taken them down. He tells himself it's about the sense of power, about knowing he had their life in his hands and chose to spare it. That's what his new masters believe, in any case. But every once in a while, he isn't sure. He remembers a time when he was someone better.
And then he tries to forget.

KARA'S IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME IT WAS TWO TIMES AGO.
so basically she's a train-hopping hobo that graffitis sudoku puzzles and does the hero thing incognito in whatever city she's in that week. she often stops in to check on the people she's close to, but other than that, she keeps as under the radar as much as she possibly can. she also has this nasty habit of eating everything in people's refrigerators whenever she stops by.

Erik and Charles were in prison, but they're out now. Erik has pretty much gone full Magneto and Charles has gone grimdark. Buildings have been destroyed and mindfucks have occurred. If the government isn't going to accept metahumans, they are intent on making their own, and Black Bolt is going to help them with their new Genosha/Attilan (Genotillan?).
They have built a new Cerebro in secret to attempt to locate Erik's family, along with any metahumans who are in hiding who may want to ally themselves with them and/or could benefit from their protection.

Jade lives with Kanaya (and Karkat?) at their orphanage. She spends a lot of her time with the kids, and is probably also studying to get a degree in something insane like nuclear physics. She's chopped off a lot of her hair, but she still wears glasses and her front teeth are still just a bit too big. I'd like to think she stayed close with a lot of the people she was friends with as a kid, and is for sure still close with John and Rose. She hasn't registered, though, and so has to hide her powers.
