I thought the series had an interesting premise (in the BILLY GOES SOMEWHAT CRAY, FIND THE SCARLET WITCH TO FIX HIM idea), but they lost me with Magneto being insanely ooc and then suddenly Doombots. This was followed up by Simon... Randomly being there, Iron Lad Time Adventures, and Doctor Doom being in love. None of which helped matters.
But by far what I found the most infuriating was Wanda saying something along the lines of "I'm not a real person, I'm just the daughter of Magneto, the sister of Quicksilver, and the Vision's wife." It showed a fundamental misunderstanding of the character. Not only that, but a dismissal of one of the more prominent and longstanding female figures in the Marvel universe based on her relationships with men. More than that... She's been Magneto's daughter only officially since the late 80s, the Vision's wife since the late 80s, and being Pietro's sister is really more of a footnote for her.
Killing off one of the female characters, and sending away the only character of color on the book was just added classiness.
Actually, Luna's first appearance was 1982, so I guess you could say Magneto has officially been Pietro and Wanda's father for at least that long. Either way, they also had a family-type relationship with the Whizzer and Miss America, and then the High Evolutionary, so umm. Yeah. My point remains.
I think it was best summarized as Billy has an adventure and everyone else is furniture. Or at least they have the personalities and presence of furniture.
I also didn't like Kate's reasoning for wanting to quit. I feel like she's always been aware of the risks involved in being an Avenger, but she's always been able to hold her own. I also think it's insulting to the characters without powers, especially to Clint, that she would be so dismissive of people without superhuman abilities. She's never been like that and while Cassie's death is certainly upsetting, I just don't see her as the type of person who would give up and let herself feel weak and defeated.
And once again, Tommy manages to be the most likable character in the series for me. Over the course of the series I went from liking Billy as a character to actually despising him and wishing he was dead. So, good work Mr. Heinberg!
FROM SOMEWHAT RELEVANT ACCOUNT... actual thoughts and feelings on this now that I am thinking about them.
Obviously, I am super pissed off that they killed Cassie. She was legitimately the only reason I kept reading this series for as long as I did. That and sending Eli off somewhere else just makes me so mad that I'm glad I downloaded this instead of buying it because I would've wanted to rip it to shreds and that would be three or four bucks down the toilet.
Overall, the series is godawful. Terrible art, terrible characterization, lazy plotting... And it really, really, really made me hate Billy as a character. He was always a little bit annoying to me? And like, I've seen RPers that make him interesting by giving him an actual personality and stuff, but this series for him just made me really not like him.
Mostly because of the fact that this whole plot about finding his ~spirit mom~ ignores the fact that he already has a mother who is in actual fact his biological mother. More than half of the team has partent issues (Cassie with her mom and her dad being dead, Tommy and his parents, Teddy being raised by a single mom who wasn't his bio mom and then was killed, Jonas being a robot) so you think that would make him a little bit more grateful for the fact that not only does he have parents who are loving and accepting of him as a gay teen superhero, but they're parents that let his alien boyfriend and spirit twin live with them because they have no where else to go. Billy's parents hardly get any screen time, but they seem like the most accepting, loving, and flexible parents I have ever seen. Maybe to the point of being unrealistic, but that's what they are.
And he just tosses them out the window for spirit mom because he's an Avengers fanboy.
I just— I can't even with that. Even if all the characterization issues, the deaths, and everything else were somehow a million times better, I would still hate this series because the basic premise is so terrible to me.
I think basically what I got out of this series was that you can screw over all your female and poc characters, but as long as you put some romantic emphasis on a gay couple as a footnote, the majority of your audience will sing your praises.
Not saying that I am opposed to Billy and Teddy kissing, because that is all fine and well! But I feel like everyone just took that and ran with it and ignored all the horrible characterization and plotting of the rest of it. Like the end? It really sucked. And I feel like they had no idea how to end it, so Wanda just wandering off into the sunset and the X-men and Avengers respectively just giving up was all so forced and stupid.
Simon what even is the world doing with you.
And basically all my favorite characters got killed or written out (other than Kate, but what even was her characterization). So if they ever relaunch a series about BILLY AND HIS BOYFRIEND AND HIS BROTHER I don't think I'll bring myself to care.
Well, and I don't actually know that they could relaunch the series as WICCAN AND HULKLING ARE GAY AND I GUESS SPEED IS THERE TOO because even though you get the statue and the Avengers being somewhat more accepting of them at the end, you still (or I still anyway) got the impression the Billy and Teddy were kind of done.

Also apparently that was the longest 4 days of their lives.
What with starting off at the beginning of heroic Age and lasting until two weeks before Spider-Island.

Tommy had to be the most likeable character in the story, though. Especially toward the end.
