god, I'm posting everywhere today

GUYS.

GUYS.

LOOK AT WHAT I JUST GOT ON REPATCHA:

Photobucket

Of course, I already knew that:

cavil
v. intr.
To find fault unnecessarily; raise trivial objections.
v. tr.
To quibble about; detect petty flaws in.
n. A carping or trivial objection.
He finds something to cavil at in everything I say.

BUT ALL THE SAME. REALLY? REALLY?

So guys, so this post isn't totally useless:
One. Tell me about your character's names, what they mean, HOW THEY'RE VERBS.
Two. Tell me about the ridiculous things reCaptcha does.

Two: Narnia helicopters

Scathach is the Celtic goddess of war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scathach). The verb scathe means "to attack with severe criticism."

Rikku is... Al Bhed, I guess. It translates to "Huggo." SO HUGS ALL AROUND???

[identity profile] ravagekitteh.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

Mew is the sound a cat makes or something

Ravage is a word but I'm lazy and refuse to look up the definition. My Ravage doesn't do that shit though.

Artemis.... well Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, a point that he actually uses in his favor a couple times. Fowl is... a surname idk if I means anything besides being able to make puns with the word foul involved

Quoth Ochodre's analysis:

"..‘baku’ translates roughly to ‘tapir’; ra is ‘good’ or ‘skilled’.

Tapirs are herbivorous mammals of the order Perissodactyla, or odd-toed ungulates, making them cousins to horses and rhinoceros. They live in jungles in South America and Asia, sport odd, elephant-like snouts, and have absolutely nothing in common with either a particular quiet, polite white-haired boy or the spirit of the Ring’s previous incarnation.

Or do they?

As it turns out, tapir are associated with a certain Japanese youkai, a spirit or demon from folklore. Fans of Pokémon may recall that Drowzee, one of the original 150 monsters, resembled a tapir and had the signature move ‘Dream Eater’. This was a nod to this particular variety of youkai; the baku.

The baku are mostly benevolent youkai that are said to eat bad dreams and nightmares so people can sleep peacefully. They are often depicted with the body of a lion and the head of an elephant, which results in something that looks a bit like a tapir. Pictures, toys, and statues of baku are sometimes placed in Japanese bedrooms to ward off bad dreams. However, baku are also sometimes depicted as trouble makers that rob people of all their dreams, and sleep.

The role of the baku may sound similiar to a more Western tradition. Dreamcatchers served the same purpose, hanging in bedrooms to catch nightmares before they could enter the sleeper’s dreams. Dreamcatchers are almost circular and laced with webbing and beds, like a spider’s web, and decorated with threads and feathers hanging off the bottom.

Very much like the Millennium Ring and its pendants.

So obviously, Takahashi was trying to send some sort of baku / dreamcatcher vibes when he named Bakura and designed the Ring. What that means, though, is still up for debate."

The kanji for Ryou means 'complete; finish' and is far more boring :D

According to Jon's narration, he was named "Jonathan" by his great grandmother after the boy she never had, and Crane was his father's name (They also linked it in canon back to Ichabod Crane, and made Jonathan offended by what a cowardly pussy the schoolmaster was). He claims he drew Scarecrow from the "universal symbol of poverty and fear", but it's really from way earlier in childhood than that.

"Craddock" is Welsh in origin and originally meant "amiable," which suits. Jim adopted the nickname "Gentleman Jim" in life as a highwayman, making up for the fact he was born a title-less bastard. In death he carried it over and put 'Ghost' after it because he was dead and it seemed like a good idea.

Knives: ...kind of self-explanatory, though I really do wonder exactly how a pacifist like Rem ended up naming a small child after sharp objects. :|

Slade: Interesting bit of trivia I discovered is that Slade is the name of a band. It is also the last name of a singer (Isaac Slade) whose back ground reminds me of Jericho a bit.

Rudy: It has German roots that mean "famous wolf". Not really sure if it fits, but there ya go!

Takaya = "respectful one".

Sakaki is also known as Cleyera japonica, AKA the Sakaki tree, a sacred tree in the Shinto religion. Back in myth, when Susanoo was a dick to his sister the sun goddess, Amaterasu Omikami, and caused her to run away and hide and pretty much take all sunlight with her, the gods dug up a 500-branched Sakaki tree from a sacred mountain, hung an 8 foot string of 500 jewels from its top branches, an 8 foot long mirror from its middle branches, and on its lower branches were blue and white offerings. Then they all partied and tricked the goddess to come back out, and then tossed a sacred net over the entrance to the cave she was hiding in to fix it all.

Also, to "Takaya" is to give a speech about half as long as one of the Major's, except replacing the topic of war with morality/life and death/hopelessness/THE VOID THAT IS EXISTENCE/etc. May or may not include trying to gun down people and children just because.

Beatrice is, of course, named after the dead lady Dante wanted to do. This is very suitable, since she is the dead lady Kinzo wants to do. There are various references to the Divine Comedy sprinkled throughout Umineko besides that, though.

Rue is both a verb meaning sadness and a poisonous plant, but I doubt the people who named her knew any of this. She actually named herself, after the last syllable of kureru, the Japanese pronunciation of her other name, Kraehe. Which means crow in German.

Ryan is an Irish given name meaning "little king" and "that which is worshipped". + Evans is of Welsh origin. In its anglicised form the name means "son of Evan". = "Little King, son of Evan, that is worshipped."

Alternately: The Evans family thought it would be weird to name Ryan like. Shi-tzu. Especially since his sister is named Sharpay (Shar Pei). Re: HSM stage play! "They could have named you Pug . . . Or Shi Tzu."

TROWA BARTON is actually a take-off on Tim Burton, thanks to one of the people on the main team for the anime being a total fanboy. TROWA is also a bastardization of trois, or 'three'. (BARTON happens to mean something along the lines of "the barley town".)

MILES EDGEWORTH is a bit to do with the Japanese version of his name. To quote Court Records, "'EDGEWORTH' probably comes from his Japanese name Mitsurugi, as in, 'edge of a sword.'" MILES is usually seen by baby name books everywhere as meaning 'soldier'.

WRECK-GAR is a shortening of "worthless wreck-walking pile of garbage'.
