MORE QUESTIONS

It's serious poll is serious time again, C&C. This time I have an inquiry of a more metatastical nature than usual. And I am anxious to hear your answers, double spaced or no!

What do you like best about playing your characters? What do you like least, or find most challenging? As always this is mostly just an opportunity to indulge tl;dr instincts. If you want to babble on about dropped characters, or prospective characters I will do the opposite of stop you.

[identity profile] girlyboywonder.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OH BOY QUESTIONS

CARRIE started out as just a HEY I WANNA BE IN THE COOL BAT-CLUB TOO :C urge at another game, but then it turned out she was pretty fun. Then I discovered that I absolutely love yanking Batman out of her life and seeing how she copes with suddenly not being "and Robin", but just "Robin". Also I love that she knows all these people that don't know her, because universe fuckery is my favorite. ALSO ALSO PULLING FUTURISTIC SLANG OUT OF MY ASS, THAT IS THE BEST. But that said, it can be a little trying to keep up forever. If I had to go back to a canon-fresh Carrie that hadn't been hanging out in a setting where they don't talk like crazy 80s stoners, I would shed a tear or two.
The only thing I've run into about her so far that I didn't like playing actually happened in another game-- she UM SOMEHOW IS THE LEADER OF THE AVENGERS WHAT?? I SWEAR THERE'S A HISTORY THERE IT DIDN'T JUST HAPPEN (oh wait that's exactly what it did), and so she's obligated to care for and try to help each and every member of the team. No matter how much I might not enjoy threading with the characters involved. 8'| But that's only happened like twice so I can deal.

KHISANTH. Is a walking, talking guilty pleasure of mine. I have loved dragons since I was like in the womb, and I've loved her character since I first read the book at age like 10 or something. So playing her is just THE MOST FUN SINCE SLICED BREAD and I'm beyond delighted if someone actually seems to enjoy threading with her. Because I'm totally just playing her for me. Anything else is just a totally sweet bonus.
What I don't like is that sometimes I'm afraid I might come off like the five year old that brought his Jurassic Park dinosaurs to the My Little Pony rally and is sitting there going RAAHHH RAAAHHH I KILLED ALL OF YOU YOU'RE DEAD NOW. Because she's a tiny bit of a godmode and sometimes I'm afraid people will think I'm playing her just to ALWAYS WIN AND WRECK EVERYTHIIIINNNGGG. :c
Most challenging is probably how little she learns from her own mistakes. I like playing characters and taking them through various learning processes to improve themselves, but uh. I don't think I've ever played a character more resistant to self-improvement. Nothing is her fault and someone else must pay for wrongs (imagined or not) at all times. Asshole.

BLACK BOLT. omg my favorite thing is definitely turning out to be all these Marvel shenanigans I've been missing out on by only playing DC for the longest time. Even though he's not too involved in the main universe, SUDDENLY ALL THIS CR IS OPEN TO ME. Not that it wasn't before, it's just more easily obtained now. Also, I love that, while I can cover a lot of ground CR-wise with Carrie and Khisanth, there are a few types that they would just not be interested in. Weak characters, for example. It's a real stretch to get either of them to talking to, say, kids. Black Bolt totally digs kids and is all about protecting weak people, though. SO BASICALLY I FEEL LIKE HE COMPLETES MY CR NET AND I COULD, IF I WANTED, SNAG ANY KIND OF CHARACTER FOR CR.
What I don't like about playing him is, well... he doesn't talk much. And I'm pretty sure that anyone that puts up with that in a thread has the patience of a god, since they pretty much have to take the lead on IC-conversation at all times. And that sucks. And when he actually is typing, he's so darn taciturn. :c It's hard to slip conversational cues in for the other player even when he's actually communicating. Bolt, you dick.

There are so many best things about Daken despite his being kind of an annoying chessmaster in canon. Even when he's faking friendliness he consistently comes off as a total dick; the only difference is whether his douchiness comes off as malicious/trolly or teasing. Since this depends largely on the sense of humor of the other character, just about every response he makes to everything is the jackass response. In case it isn't obvious, it is ridiculously fun. BUT he also has horrible rage/daddy issues/other problems and it's fun to unravel those when chances to do so pop up.

The bad thing about playing him is that HE HAS NO GODDAMN ICONS so hopefully his book will get good art in the future and until then he'll just use the same four faces (SORRY).

Also SINCE YE OLDE THORSPEAKE IS A TAG, filed under reasons it was difficult to play Thor. It's easy to plug in thee/thou/what have you where appropriate, but it's not to make a sentence sound pseudo-Elizabethan without that. Also, despite being friendly and a good guy, he doesn't really relate as naturally to people as you might think, and he's kind of awkwardly formal with pretty much everyone who isn't Asgardian/another god/ an Avenger since like the very beginning. Which, I mean, is a huge reason that I love him as a character, since it's interesting, but it does not make CR easy. It tends to feel - in canon - like there's a gulf between him and other people. LEAVING BEFORE I TL;DR MORE ABOUT CHARACTERS I DON'T HAVE THAN CHARACTERS I DO

[identity profile] origamiguardian.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, I am the queen of TL;DR LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY CHARACTER, so I am sorry in advance.

Like best: I love the power of paper mastery and I love playing a bad ass superhero who can also be so very vulnerable in many ways. I love that, like many R.O.D characters, context from her canon is well provided that I know how she's going to act and what she's going to do whether she's on a shopping trip or eating ice cream with friends or defending herself against 50 laser beam shooting robots. I love that I get to show off my own literary nerdery (which is still nothing compared to Maggie's). I love that she's got some cool canon points that help make her interested in various plots going on in the game (e.g., the brainwash plot last year). In summary: I love being a nerd moeblob who can kill you with an index card.

Like least: She's shy. And she talks. Like an Ernest Hemingway Novel. While dying in the rain. (Also, another thing I hate about playing Maggie? The fact that I fucking hate fucking Ernest Fucking Hemingway with a fucking passion.) Posts I write for Maggie tend to be in my TL;DR style and then edited down to where it actually sounds like something she'd say. These traits can actually be fun to play out, but it is VERY hard to develop CR with her because of these things. If I play her well, she is not going to come up with scintillating things to say in many situations, and if all I get people tagging back to me are "Oh?" and "Do you like cheese?" and "I agree" she will have NOTHING, if I am being IC, to say. I have to hope (sometimes) people will give her something interesting to talk about. Once she gets to know people and opens up more, or when she is in a crisis situation where her fear disappears and her talents shine, she can do and say some fun things, but creating the opportunities for her to do that is extremely difficult. It takes a lot of dogged tagging and the ever-present fear that most people are going to think Maggie is boring--which is honestly a fair assessment, given how she is going to come off to certain people realistically. If you've ever seen R.O.D the TV and heard her talk and didn't see the adorable parts where she's blushing profusely over a book autograph, you'd think she was a dull character. But when the challenge of playing her pays off? It's a fantastic feeling. :) ETA: Because I also want to be clear, this is not "waaaaaah no one will taaaaaag meeeeeee"--I just accept there are a lot of hurdles to getting CR with this kind of character--but it's WORTH it.

Most Challenging: The fact that when I stop playing her for whatever reason, she climbs out of my skull and stares at me with huge puppy dog eyes until I find the time and energy to app her again.

Okay guys I really like Bucky Barnes it is kind of embarrassing, but he is like... the first character I picked up here at this my first realish RPG

STUFF I LIKE
+ Bucky has a real fun, distinct way of speaking, that lets me play around with old-fashioned slangwords and military jargon and generally registers of language I wouldn't normally get to use, by golly
+ He's funny, both on purpose and not so on purpose— he makes a lot of jokes, but there are also just avenues of fish-out-of-water comedy there
+ But he isn't just a joke character? I don't want to go all DEEP on you, but he's got a lot of hooks on him— war, history, jealousy, patriotism, Chris Samnee art
+ USAmerican history is KIND OF MY THING, even if WW2 isn't but I get to do all kinds of fun research and thinking and rolling around in anachronisms with the added safety net of the MU not being all that great at historical accuracy so if I mess up, well hey, this WW2 had lasers
+ He is an extrovert which is such a boon my goodness

BAD STUFF
+ While it's like, super nice to have a character with obvious speech quirks it's also a bit of a crutch. I worry about just relying on you know, saying "cripes" a bunch instead of actual characterization
+ I LOVE CONTINUITY, but Bucky's is kind of a mess in that there's a lot of it but (from my pullpoint at least) it's all in flashback so not in a distinct order, plus crossreferencing with actual historical events
+ I also used to look up like every word he said to make sure it was around c. 1944, I stopped doing that but still
+ OH GOD IT'S BUCKY BARNES, he's gotten somewhat popular now but when I apped him I know people were like "seriously bucky what is she thinking why would anyone ever"
+ OH GOD IT'S BUCKY BARNES, and playing a character so blatantly "NuMarvel" earns me disapproving judgment from ye old pre-Disassembled canon purists

Oh and:
+ We have a lovely Marvel cast but the pullpoint that actually lets him be his for-real extrovert self also makes it so he knows like no one, even if they know (of) him

THE TLDR IS STRONG IN ME

Ghost

THE GOOD - I enjoy his ambiguously reformed criminal status and the number of contradictory positions he holds. He's a total paranoid headcase with conspiracies that--oh shi--half of them are plausible, especially in the Marvel universe. Fuckin, Area 51? Boy there are Skrulls on TV on Earth 616. And the Illuminati actually does exist. And Hank Pym could totally be rewiring brains if he wanted to. (But he probably isn't).

Socially his awkwardness is easy for me, because under Jeff Parker he's sort of like an overt schizoid / schizotypal personality, and his willingness to understand other people from a logical perspective is the kind of challenge I adore (I'm not logical myself, so it's hard, but in a good way).

THE MEH - tracking mainline marvel events is hard for me, since I have a short attention span and I skim when I'm bored. So I feel guilty sometimes for not knowing certain things and for taking forever to understand stuff that should be obvious (and I still haven't read Fear Itself's main plotline I just can't...make myself care? w/e man w/e).

Arcade

THE GOOD - this mofo is jovial and pleasant and confident and just fun to play, and getting into that mentality makes RP overall more enjoyable. And his hidden tormented depths (which do exist, like tiny pockets of scalding sauce in a hot pocket) are there if I ever want to get my angstasaurus excavated.

And his threads with Deadpool. ;~; I adore those.

THE MEH - HA I TRICKED YOU THERE IS NO MEH

out_of_time: Bloodied Jack on a screen (On screen)

[personal profile] out_of_time 2011-09-13 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh I like this one!

JACK is loads of fun to play because he's an action hero. I AM SECRETLY A CHILD WHO STILL ENJOYS SHOOTING THINGS and I'm never happier with Jack than when I can throw him into some big fight that will let him add to his kill list. Jack is an unstoppable badass but he's also on the lower end of the power scale in this setting, so that's interesting to work with as well. I also love that he's part of copcast and has access to these interactions and organizations, both for fun times and for going 'YUSUKE TAKE SERAS AND INSERT FROM THE ROOF GEDDOE AND I WILL COVER YOU.' Jack is very cunning and he's a leader; it's lots of fun to have him try to puzzle things out and plan responses to various crises.

I also enjoy playing with his angst and his morality- he is always carrying around a metric shitton of hidden pain that he hides for the sake of doing his job. He is also capable of terrible terrible things but he doesn't usually do them in game because his top priority is always saving innocent lives however possible, and in the City Jack has a lot more options for doing that than he does in a contrived Fox TV show. Finally, I can get a lot more humourous mileage out of Jack than one would expect- his canon and character are so serious that he makes a great straight man for the City's shenanigans, especially when played off copcast.

In terms of what's hard about him: EMOTIONS HOW DO THEY WORK. I'm very comfortable having him be all intense when things are exploding, but casual talking and managing close relationships is still hard for me to do convincingly even after playing him this long. The thing is, '24' was a drama series as much as it was an action show, and I think Kiefer Sutherland did an amazing job expressing Jack's pain and passion in its emotional moments. I was mainly watching it for the shooting though, and it can be hard for me to live up to the example of Sutherland's portrayal, especially working through text.

GOOD STUFF

+ I love Natasha, I just love her, she's my favorite
+ I really like continuity and there is a lot of it, with bonus icons from artists that I like and also more coming up (Secret Avengers, ilu and your artist roster, also moar Samnee)
+ We have a superawesome Matt here now
+ I get the pleasure of just playing a character I like the way I see her (and not the way tumblr rp sees her oh god) and this gives me satisfaction

BAD STUFF
+ She doesn't have any real speech quirks and she's the quiet lurking secretive type most of the time
+ This limits CR, which is BAD because she gets more interesting with CR, beyond pleasantries
+ Her internal monologue is way more interesting than her external actions most of the time, and this is not good for RP as a storytelling genre. It lends itself to logs more and I am the worst at logs

I'm having a sick day so this is the perfect time to answer deep questions.

Sanji is the one I'm currently deeply in love with, as a character. I liked him tons when I first started playing him...shit, it's going to be two years this fall. But the more I spend time watching the anime or re-reading the manga, the more things I find about him that I love. One Piece is unique among long-running shonen series in that it usually takes the typical themes and turns them slightly on their heads. The pirates' reasons for being shonen meatheads are vastly different from, say, DBZ or Bleach shonen posturing. The sense of honor is unique, the promises they make and the reasons for keeping them are different. And I find that Oda's way of seeing his characters and their world is vastly appealing to me.

I love Sanji's malleable moods. I love his philosophies. Playing him is making me a better cook at home, too. I love his dirty mouth. I love his temper. I loooooove his fighting style and his moves. He's fun to write in action, which is why I love to throw him into as many fight logs as I can. Writing his physical kenpo style is different from writing sword fights, and I like it. Personality-wise, Sanji has a big heart. He has strange ways of showing his respect and appreciation for his friends, sometimes, but he does love and respect certain people in a deep way. He's not afraid to show emotion, but he also knows when to control it and when to set it aside. He's intelligent, and I don't think a lot of people play on that. All of the OP characters are multi-faceted, and I discover more and more about them the longer I'm a fan. I want to play Sanji as multi-faceted as he is, show all sides of him, including is flaws, and not just focus on one single part of his personality, like his being a cook or his love of women.

The challenging things about him? His love of women. Seriously. I don't know how to write that well - I'm always afraid I'm either being too heavy-handed, too creepy, or not convincing enough. His encounters are the first het I've ever written, and it's actually very difficult for me to wrap my brain around. The depth of his character can also be challenging, because I'm always concerned that I'll only skim the surface and concentrate too much on one facet and forget another. I hate that he smokes - I'm actually allergic to cigarette smoke, and I don't like romanticising the habit...I almost hate that he does such a good job at making it look suave.

But in the end I love him to pieces. I've got his origin story playing on the TV while I'm writing this, and even after two years of being a fan I'm still learning more about him. I only just realized a deep connection between something he thought/said the first time he met Zoro and the major incident that happened between them on Thriller Bark. He's a beautiful man and I love everything about him, even the parts of his personality that are so hard to agree with and/or write. If nothing else, I want to be able to write him accurately so that people who interact with him find him interesting enough that they want to start reading or watching One Piece themselves, the same way a fabulous Ace player was the reason I started reading it myself.

MAJOR is fun for reasons of villainy, period. Yes it's fun to write his voice and interact with his enemies and allies and get inside his truly warped worldview, but at the end of the day I'm in it for the grandiose speeches and convoluted schemes to start World War Three. The Major is a straightforward purely evil supervillain with loads of hammy tropes that are enormous fun to play around with, yet he's still very original in his own way; I never feel that I'm playing someone generic even when I'm ripping off the Manchurian Candidate for a plot.

Also, I love how much presence he has in the game through his plots. I love the reputation for villainy he's built up and how his actions tend to have lasting effects on characters involved and how his plots are still referenced ICly years later. Despite all his failures, it feels like the Major's evil casts a shadow over the City in how many people he has hurt. When playing someone like this, that's a very rewarding feeling.

Finally, despite how monstrously evil he is the Major is funny. Not funny like the Joker, but funny in the sense that he is an enormously pompous and absurd cartoon of a character who is just begging to have his bubble burst. The kitten incident earlier this year is a case in point.

The negative of course is that the Major is completely dependent on plotting in order to remain a playable character. This is not a guy I can just coast through activity on CR with. He can't build any real relationships besides 'enemy' and 'ally.' I can't put up an open log with him just wandering around the City and see who stops to chat with the Nazi war criminal. Pretty much 90% of the characters in the game have good reason to hate and/or fear him.

This makes playing him like playing a shark- always gotta be moving forward towards the next plot. Stop moving = death. This makes playing him a lot of work, because his complicated large-scale plots require a lot of energy to set up, with the planning, organization, approval, keeping in contact with participants so that everyone's on the same page, making last-minute changes, and so on. Still, it's usually worth it.

Calvin's pros and cons are very simple. PRO: IT'S CALVIN. My love for this strip and the impact it had on me as a kid cannot be overstated. Calvin is my main humorous character and my top priority with him is always shenanigans and humour. I love whenever I can do something with him like getting his hair Weasleyfied or going to the Moon. Calvin's weird so he can make characters react to him, but he's also excitable so he's good at reacting to others as well. There are different dynamics I can work with when it comes to him. He's just fun, and really helps balance out my other characters who are all some variety of maniacal.

Also Calvin has a sensitive emotional side that is challenging to play, but also very rewarding when I feel I've done it right.

The CON is that IT'S CALVIN. If I mess him up I am a bad person and should feel sad. Doing justice to the spirit and letter of his canon can be very hard, just in terms of keeping his speech patterns correct and so on. I also sometimes fall into lazy traps with him, like just having him react to something cool and ask question after question, which tends not to be fun.

[personal profile] trueltning_fury 2011-09-13 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay as for the other two...

Geddoe was the first RP character I ever played. He got off to a rocky start in his first game but I finally settled into a stride with him. C&C has been good to him. True to his character it look him a long time to build up enough of a reputation to gain him some proper allies and even friends, but I'm glad I stuck with him and didn't drop him after his plot a year ago. He's really come a long way.

He's hard, though. Being one of the three playable heroes from Suikoden III he has more of a personality and backstory than most of the characters, but that doesn't mean he's fully fleshed out. There's a lot of headcanon involved, mainly for his day-to-day behavior, his habits, likes/dislikes, and such. His personality doesn't lend well to easy CR, he's not friendly and he does keep his secrets close to himself. But anyone who puts the effort into wrestling either information or interaction out of him may find out why I like him. He meshes with the more taciturn and loner side of my own personality. He's smart - he's the most wise and intelligent of any character I've played, and I like being able to actually play smart. I actually do enjoy exploring the differences between a pre-industrial world like his and a modern world like ours. It's an exercise in extrapolation, and I really do love doing that.

As for Alastair...again, despite having a ridiculously strong backstory and clear personality traits, he was a single-arc henchman in the anime and thus, requires a lot of headcanon in order to keep alive as a character for so long. But, being in the game this long means he's had time to let the world affect and change him, so the game itself has helped to build his character to what it is now. I like that he's young, fun, has reckless hobbies, and still has strong ideals and philosophies. I also really enjoy his fluid moral state. When villains reform in YGO, you only get a few seconds of a glimpse into their newly smiling faces and never find out exactly how they move on from there to become good guys, or at least not-bad guys. That leaves plenty of room for a guy like Alastair to waffle over his reformation, to even be influenced poorly and turned back to what he used to be. But he has the experiences of canon to also prevent him from just being what he was when he first appeared as a villain. That's both a challenge and a thing I love. I love being able to really work hard to extrapolate how he would react in certain situations, and what would push him to the dark side - or, conversely, keep him from fully backsliding.

The only thing I really don't like is that in canon he was the hacker who did all the breaking into corporate mainframes and I know NOTHING about hacking. I can't even work Facebook properly. That's a part of him I have to fudge when I try to write it and I usually make some major computer nerd fails. I hope people can overlook that and realize it's just because the writer is NOT a hacker. Stupid Alastair hacking into Industrial Illusions and KaibaCorp and making it hard for me to keep up.

ohay alex who's that sexy motherfucker in your icon there

THE GOOD Oh my god I just. I can gush about how much I love this guy forever and ever. There's so much good that in this character. I love pretty much everything about his personality, in the sense that he really, actually is kind of a monster in his own special way. He's cold, and doesn't understand people, but he wants to help them and fix all their problems; which I find to be one of the easier parts, because I'm the same way. I love having a character that's involved in politics, and getting to look through that glass and play with the City's political spectrum is really intriguing. Plus I actually...really love the policies that Mitch went for in his canon, which makes him easy to come up with policies and things for the city! I also love the overtone of a fanboy, and playing him here is just it's own little reward! C:

THE LEAST/THE CHALLENGING/WHATEVER THIS IS A BLANKET SECTION OH MY GOD THE FACTOIDS. I always fail on this, and I try so hard to consume as much obscure history about politics and architecture and engineering as I can find, but dear god I have no idea how BKV made that all seem so easy and natural. Mitch is one of those guys that probably could win Jeopardy with no effort. Also, sometimes it can be...frustrating to have such a restrictive character. I love him to death, but Mitchell has certain parts of his personality (coughcough) that are left to the imagination, and while I have a particular view on it, I also try and...keep from downright saying it. Thankfully, it is not a big part of his character, but I think in RP it comes up more than it does in a controlled writing setting.

Oh, and also HIS VOICE is a pain in the ass. :| I need to get that autofill stuff working on here.

THE GOOD: Mordin is so cool. He's a badass, quirky, brilliant science-hero with a different worldview and a complex personality, someone who loves art and is friendly and upbeat while prizing logic over emotion and being a firm believer in science. The whole 'I am lovable yet am responsible for a bioweapon' aspect is also totally cool. And I never lack for things to do with him. Mordin's an alien doctor and scientist who's out of his element on another planet, working two jobs and maybe killing bad guys on the side. There's a lot I can do with this guy!

THE BAD: Like I said on HMD, his voice is a pain in the neck to get right, and it's hard for me to tell sometimes when he would go hard-logic-ruthless or soft-compassionate-healer in a given situation.

THE GOOD

+ I love him so fucking much, it's kind of sad. Like, seriously. Eppy can probably attest to the fact that Jimmy Kirk gives me all the feelings.
+ He's the character I've played various incarnations of the longest, so his voice is one that I don't really fret about anymore.
+ nu!Trek is just so much fun to play with because I can do things like reference stuff from TOS & the expanded universe even though it's neither of those
+ Chris Pine has a gorgeous face
+ SPACE *^*
+ TECHNOBABBLE *^*

THE BAD

- I can't make Hoth jokes ICly :c
- He's a difficult character to play without castmates sometimes because pretty much everything he is, is devoted to his ship and crew
- Fucking Prime Directive making it so he can't ramble about home and do cool tech stuff (fuu)
- Trying to figure out what pop culture things he would know. Sherlock Holmes is referenced in the movies, he listens to the Beastie Boys as a kid... Trying to find the line of what he would know and what he wouldn't is reeeeally hard at times.

The Good. I. Fucking love. This character. Spoiler! When Civil War was going on, I was only arbitrarily interested in Marvel and was more of a hipster and read things like Murder Mysteries and Transmetropolitan. So all I knew was that Iron Man got Captain America killed, and that he was a dick, ergo: I hated him and thought he should die in a fire. SO FAST FORWARD to like...I think a little under 4 years ago, I picked him up at another game and actually started reading his canon and I could just go on and on about how much he's really turned around for me. I love how much of a terrible person he is, and how much he struggles with his vices and his flaws. I love that he wants to be better, but he struggles and fails at that so much. I love that he's an incorrigible playboy, and that I can really just let him stud around and be a badass motherfucker in two lines. And I love being able to say the most ridiculous, flirty things, and have the most lewd and terrible allusions be made...well, I get to let myself out of the bag and let the dirty jokes fly. I also love getting to play out businesses and the superhero angle all in one sexy little package!

Least favorite/bladeblah The thing that is always so difficult to do with Tony is having his fingers in every pot. In Marvel, it can just be alluded and understood that Tony is pretty much going to get in your shit, but physically playing that out can be taxing, especially for three years! I also...find that his playboy side can be challenging as well, because brazenly hitting on all the women is isdoixc so ridiculous, and can also be challenging!

I love Tigger because he's just so simple. I love it. Tigger doesn't care about things like the economy or city wide crises or the fact that I have three chapters of Chinese Philosophy to finish. He just cares about hanging out with his friends and bouncing and having fun. Playing Tigger is such a nice way to unwind after a ridiculously hard day doing things. And plus, he's Tigger. Winnie-the-Pooh was such a huge part of my childhood that playing Tigger now and here reminds me of being small and having fun. The downside is also that he's just so simple. And plus, he's an iconic character so it's a lot of 'oh god am I screwing up your childhood'.

THE GOOD

+ I love Kara bunches and she's got a crap ton of potential as a character
+ It's really, really a ton of fun to play with the dynamic of alien from another planet and teenager trying to fit in.
+ I have so much fucking headcanon about Kryptonian culture you have no idea
+ She's a total geek! And she would probably love to talk someone's ears off about space or robotics or something and that's a lot of fun for me to write.
+ I get to pick and choose certain parts of the ways she's been canonically written and smoosh them together since no one can really agree on how to write her.

THE BAD

- She has a lot of canon the We Do Not Talk About
- I'm seriously convinced that DC hates her and they keep piling all kinds of shit on her because of that. Like they seriously never let her have nice things. So she doesn't know what to do in a place like the City where she could have nice things.
- DC in general is still making me cringe and that takes away a little bit of the enjoyment. I WILL GET OVER THIS, THOUGH.

Ggio I always feel I can write better, develop better, so I love being able to play him in an environment I feel is beneficial to his character. I just... really love him, somehow everything about him just clicks with me and I'm constantly wanting more. Even though his appearance was brief, he was and still is a huge blessing to my creative drive, and I love being able to show aspects of his canon that most had forgotten about or didn't care by the time he appeared, as well as beyond based on what we do know. In rp, I like that he's become someone who can impact the lives of others, and that he's growing up in a way that would not have been possible in his home world (not just because he died).
I don't like how immature he sounds most of the time, and I feel he acts younger than he actually is. It's also hard keeping him balanced, and showing that while he's adjusted to life in the City he still has terrible urges at heart that he wants to indulge. I don't know how well that shows. Another challenge is showing the progression of his English, so his speech is often odd and stilted and I fear that's annoying to other players. Related to that, he can't read or write well, so there are many things he struggles with around the City and others he misses out on, so I have to work with that.

Lavi is a character I've been drawn to for a while now for his humble intelligence, and how he's relatively down-to-earth and not so out there with any wacky powers or otherwise supernatural things. He was actually the first character I really got into, just before Ggio made his debut and took my attention. Lavi's very laid back and I thought he'd be great to fall back on when I grow weary of Ggio's ridiculousness. However, almost from the start Lavi's been a challenge to play because he's almost too laid back, and verges on feeling apathetic towards the City at large. It's hard to get him involved because I'm constantly thinking "Well, would he even care?" as he's the type to sit back and observe. He's also too smart for me ajshlas and I have to work to make him not sound like an idiot. Though I think I overcompensated and put too much into his tags and that's just as hard. I can't relax with him.

Juvia is the easiest to play after Ggio, and in some ways easier because her first thought when she meets people isn't "I WONDER HOW YOU TASTE :9". I had missed playing a girl and she was at the top of my list of girls I wanted to play, and thankfully isn't so major in her canon that I would feel overwhelmed. There isn't anything I dislike or find hard with her; any shortcomings that come with playing her are completely my fault. ACTUALLY I LIE it is hard sometimes writing how she talks in the third person, given that she has a limited amount of screentime and manga scanlations vary.

Tommy is a blast, I love that he's a dumbass and a douche and writing him using his powers in a blast. The challenge here isn't so much knowing who's-who in the Marvel universe, but how/if Tommy knows them and how to have him react thusly.

Lastly, Cygnus I had been looking forward to showing the kind of person he was because of the events of the past ten years or so of his life, and showing some headcanon to fill in the gaps. However, he was reclusive, a douche, and kind of crazy, and it was hard to get him out there because I felt he would have been too boring or creepy to others. I also didn't have the energy to do much with him, though that kind of applies to my whole roster, and always makes things harder.

AAAND to gush about prospective characters-

What I immediately loved about Takuto here is that his canon is fucking. Fabulous. I mean come on, a mech-piloting magical boy who has his own henshin sequence? Girl please. And then you realize you were thrown headlong into the plot and Shit Gets Real and - okay, that's about Star Driver in general. Takuto is the first main character I have considering playing since Link (OOT/MM specifically), and I think he's supposed to be the opposite of your typical mecha shonen hero. He's... really weird, actually, and not as theatrical and social as he appears to be. And canon doesn't reveal as much about him as one would expect; hell, his major character growth happened before the series began, even. So the few times I've played around with him, I enjoyed showing these two extremes, how he can be flashy and humble, even shy. The latter I know I would love to explore more, show that he's not some overbearing unreachable Shonen Hero. He's just a guy.

The challenge with Takuto, which is more paranoia, is that he's too over-the-top and animu and would just be annoying asdfkjb, or that he'd be seen more as a gag character than anything because his canon is. Insane.

And another ninja guy I've been considering is very fun and totally not like my usual character type, which is what makes him fun! He didn't get much exposure in canon until recently so I feel more comfortable fleshing him out as needed and showing what an utter nerd he is. And also how he's quite a 'loser', but he's working on it! The challenge with him would be matching the awesome of castmates because haha, that's impossible.

Okay, I'll bite, even if I haven't been playing the Monster that long.

THE GOOD:
He's a really friendly character with terrible judge in character, so I feel like I can use him to tag pretty much anyone, which is good for a first character, I think. And he can be really fun in threads at his best. Ahhh, I love the Monster in the Darkness. I think he has a nice balance between "weirdly adorable", "kind of a failure" and "actually pretty threatening sometimes".

THE DIFFICULT:
He's very self-centered, but at the same time he doesn't really talk about himself that much in canon? But he's very chatty and almost always has something to say. So when he has to talk about himself I'm a bit unsure of his voice? Actually, I'm a bit unsure of his voice a lot because it's almost too close to my own, so I have to pause and make sure "is this how I'm saying it or how he'd say it?"
And I'm still iffy on the whole Human Monster thing. Sometimes I like it and sometimes I want to roll around on the floor going OH GOD I MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER because I am overdramatic.
Also he's really passive and that makes it difficult to get him to do anything action-wise. That's not a huge fault, though.

fffffff okay, and I've been thinking of apping Flint Marko aka Sandman (Spectacular Spidey version), and presuming that no one else takes him:

The Good:
I LOVE FLINT. HE JUST WANTS THE BIG SCORE OKAY. Also I am having way too much fun writing the rough draft of his app.

The Bad:
I haven't started playing him yet. Also, I considered apping Comics!Sandman, but continuity that goes past my age makes me go crosseyed. If the character's been around for twice as long as I have, I ain't gonna attempt that. But it does make me wonder what I should or shouldn't include in his app. Should I mention his real name is William Baker or is that comics only? Stuff like that.

THE GOOD

+ Gwen has such a fun personality. It's a really nice mix of stupid teenager meets supremely fucked up meets in your face snark.
+ It's so much fun to be able to have long huge threads about the stupidest shit alskdjfas
+ She doesn't give a flying fuck about what other people think of her, so that leads to a certain... freedom? Almost, in being able to just write things and let the chips fall where they may. She's the only I play that won't at least try and be polite.
+ I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit of an angst whore at times, and she's got a lot of potential for situations that can be angsty but are the kind that are easy to bounce back from.

THE BAD

- Sometimes I have flashbacks to my stupid teenager days when I first started high school. Those sucked majorly.
- I occasionally catch myself writing words she probably wouldn't use. I used to be a dork that read the dictionary when I was bored. Gwen probably wouldn't use words like colloquialism in every day conversation.

THE REST BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT AS TL;DR

Illidan
Good His pretentious attitude about everything. And the fact that he's an actual villain. I HAVE NO OTHER STRAIGHT VILLAINS. I love that I can just creep...on all kinds of characters that I could normally not interact with naturally, and he's just so much fun! Also, playing a character who is blind is interesting.

The Bad I JUST. I cannot see him in any other plots but either completely out there magic shit, or something ridiculous like Magic*Con or timeswaps! I can't even imagine him doing something mundane like bathing or eating. Or figuring out how to use his dogtags. That leaves Illidan in this weird "been here forever" but "still doesn't know how to use his communicator" thing.

Mara
The Good Everything. I love her as a character, and her struggle between learning the force and being independent of it. She's so fascinating, and she's such a HBIC that I love just having her strut around.

The bad She's difficult to get out there. In Star Wars, everyone she knows, she met through either trying to kill, or helping the person she tried to kill. She doesn't know how to get along with people, except through fabricated personalities. She's just not comfortable with that stuff, and it makes it hard for me to get her out there!

Megamind
The Good He's so lighthearted and fun! He's just...kind of stupid in the worst ways, and smart in the best ones, and I love having a character that isn't from some srs or grimdark canon, and his skewed views of how life is supposed to be is just so much fun.

The Bad He's exhausting! He's also sometimes hard because I can't get him into some of the darker stuff, because he just wouldn't work well in those kinds of situations!

Allison
The Good TEENAGE GIRLS. MC2. Pretty much everything that is MC2 canon is the reason I love her. She's ridiculous, and she's bratty, and she's just so stubborn, and I love that.

The Bad How does I teenage girl. :| Also, trying to walk that line between moving forward and staying IC is difficult. She's got so much potential, but she's got so much development left to go, and that's rough, since we never see many hints as to how she'll develop.

GOOD STUFF

+ Loki is another one with a weird archaic register and I just GOBBLE THAT STUFF UP
+ He's a troll and trolling stuff is fun
+ Genuinely fascinating character, there's enough chaotic there to do different stuff without demanding much in the way of development
+ I love his character themes, the nature-vs-nuture, fate-vs-fashioning stuff yep

BAD STUFF
+ WAT DO, ASGARD, WAT DO— what Meg said about Fakespeare, I love it but it's tricky to find a balance that sounds like someone speaking with real personality and inflection instead of just running it through a ye olde Englishe translator and using thou instead of you. So I am always like... rereading tags a thousand times and always finding them lacking
+ I AM SHIT AT VILLAIN PLOTTING
+ Loki hates everyone, pretty much? He doesn't really care about mortals except to dick around with them sometimes. It's hard to get him to engage because of that, he's extremely Asgard-centric

THE GOOD

+ She's such a dynamic character. She's got a lot of different facets to her and she's got a ton of history. All the different things she's done, the jobs she's had... it makes for a really interesting character.
+ Carol's the oldest character I play, but she's still got a lot of room to grow and develop.
+ She's not one to take people's shit, but she can be quiet when she needs to and that's a nice contrast to other characters I play.
+ She's such a strong person and asldkjf I have lots of feelings about Carol.

THE BAD

- OH GOD SO MUCH CANON.
- She's still new which means I've still got that case of new character anxiety.
- OH GOD SO MUCH CANON.
- She's yet another blonde-haired, blue-eyed character aslkdjfalskdfsdafl
- her pretentiously hipster username was stolen from a french-english dictionary some day it is going to be changed

LET'S SEE IF THIS MAKES SENSE WITH MY HEAD BEING OFF-BALANCE

[identity profile] not-polish.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
SALLY
to be frank, sally was a character i picked up when another character i wanted to play was shot down by a potential castmate who didn't want that version of the character! she was randomly put on a poll to hide my embarrassment and this was back in the day when i listened to polls, and she surprisingly won.

suffice to say, sally was one of those characters i grew to love playing simply through researching the thought process of a character type i never really got the chance to play.

so, what i love about her!
she's a friendly, flirtatious character, and there's a lot more to her than just that. she's complex in an extremely subtle way that a lot of people seem to miss the first time they read her canon, and while there's a decent amount of knowledge on her despite being a minor character, there's a lot that i as an rp'er have to peel back and analyze. why did she do the things she did? how did she end up like the woman we come to see at the beginning of the novel? how did these events shape her? etc. etc. i'm not exactly the best analyzer, and at first i was pretty shaky with playing her. but again, she was one of those characters you could come to appreciate through analysis and stepping into her shoes. i love playing sally because she's a character i got to know. not to mention i love the cr she's built, and the fact that it's ic of her to be a bit of an attention whore and take charge of social things. it's nice playing a character who actually cares, after years and years of playing shego.

what i dislike!
of course, there are cons. with interpretation comes doubt, and there are times i doubt the way i play sally, and the way i type out her voice. i also don't like the fact that, having come from a background in playing characters who are action oriented, with sally...there isn't much action. even in canon it's explicitly stated that a lot of the heroics she's done have been staged, and that criminals never really put up a fight when she came to bust them. her voice is also finicky, and canon review is a bit awkward because there aren't a lot of scenes to go by with her. especially considering she's a younger version of the woman that's in the main timeline of watchmen. i have to read through the little flashbacks we get of her, i have to interpret her interactions with laurie and eddie like woah, and even moreso with people like hollis and the rest of the minutemen, and i have to pick up her voice through the interviews and letters we get in between the comic chapters. again, a lot of interpretation, which is both fun and nerve wracking.

TWOEY
twoey was honestly a really random "what if" character i considered playing after buying myself a venus fly trap. AND THIS IS GOING TO BE LESS TL;DR THAN SALLY'S SORRY ASKSJACLKSA.

what i like!
suuuuch an easy canon to review. either i rewatch the movie, or i just listen to the soundtrack. i can literally canon and voice review during long car rides. i also like playing a character i don't have to take seriously at all, and he's someone who can be both threatening, but funny at the same time. his voice is unique and fun to throw around, and i'm always a sucker for playing villains. and villains who don't take themselves seriously at all. he's just a really fun character and one of those characters where i love canon reviewing. he's also the only character i can type for while listening to music....suffice to say if it's his canon music. and again, love his cr, and it's so easy for him to make allies and enemies.

what i dislike!
as much as i love his voice, i dislike it was well. sometimes i think i overdo it when spelling out his vocal quirks and wonder if i do it too much or too little. i'm also nervous that he might annoy people. and i'm also afraid that he's too much of a one-trick pony. :/ but other than that, i really do love playing twoey. he's honestly a lot of fun, and relatively easy to type for.
